Sacred Shield

Postby Venoym » Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:31 pm

I have a question about Sacred Shield. I've been seeing some things both in game and in the forums (WoW forums... kinda like arguing with a mentally challenged ferret) about Prot Pallies using Sacred Shield on themselves. I can't seem to find a way to work it into my 969 without detriment to my threat generation and/or HS uptime. So the question is... how important is Sacred Shield for a prot pally cast on himself?

Mostly depends whether or not you have a holy paladin with you in the raid/5-man. If there is a holy paladin present who is specced for DS/DG then their SS is going to be better and you don't have to worry about it.

If you don't have a holy paladin however then you can just refresh SS on yourself at the start of every pull in 5-mans and refresh it if it runs out during combat with really no major loss in threat in a 5-man.

In a raid, I just refresh SS on myself by skipping consecration.

The damage soak is 500 + 0.75 x spell power. For me, it soaks right around 1000.

Even if a boss is hitting for 30,000 per shot, that's 3% reduction which
is nothing to sneeze at. It happens that my raid group almost always
has a healadin, but on the nights when he's not there I try to keep SS
on myself. Why have a 60,000 threat lead when you can have a 56,000 threat
lead and make things easier for your healers? :)

PS: Are you an officer with Wrath and Retribution on Thorium Brotherhood?
If so, hi, this is Gloomthorn.

Yes, I am the one and only Venoym from Thorium Brotherhood. Didn't realize that many people from Thorium Brotherhood hung out here. Granted, I've been lurking here for months.

As to threat... In our 25 man ICC run this past week (downed Saurfang for the first time), I was constantly having dps at 80% threat. I average 8K or so TPS according to fights using Omen as the threat meter. I have spoiled many of the Warlocks, hunters, and Mages by my high threat so that they go all out right from the word go (5K+ dps'ers). I'm going to be trying to weave SS in in place of Consecrate and see how I do on Friday's 10 man ICC run.

All your paladins, tanks and otherwise,
are diligently using Hand of Salvation
on anyone whose threat gets dangerously
high, of course?

I didn't think it was anything unusual when
I wrote it, and looking at it now all I see
is a maybe-excessive number of commas. Is
that what you're talking about?

Rather excess line breaks I think :) You are maybe posting from a narrow screened device such as a netbook or a cellphone I guess :p

Oh, that. :)

Nope, I have almost two cubits of screen width from side
by side monitors. Long lines of text are harder for people
to read on screens so I try to keep my lines short, and then
this forum fakes me out because the editor font is significantly
bigger than the skinny-ass Arial on the reading pages.

I've thought a few times that my posts were so narrow they
look like haiku or something, but I wasn't sure if anybody
else had noticed.

I keep trying to read it in iambic pentameter and it breaks my head.

It saddens me to hear it gives you pain
to read my text - you see, it was supposed
to make things easier for everyone.

You should leave out the line breaks and let readers decide for themselves what width to size their windows at.

It's the tank's job to set the pace in group, but we're all tanks in here. :P
