Heroic SH nerfed, AoE tanking is back in style!

Postby Dorvan » Fri May 25, 2007 11:57 am

Hey guys, just finished a run of Heroic Shattered Halls. I'd only been there once before (pre-patch) and that was only as far as the first boss for the Nightbane quest.

All I can say is boy was this place nerfed, now SH is a Tankadin playground on heroic as well :-) Group was as follows:

Me
Holy Pally
Affliction Lock
Frost Mage
Elemental Shamy

We did the first half the instance, up through the end of the gauntlet, by the book as far as Heroics: sheep, fear, seduce.

Around the time we got to the gladiator's hall however, we realized I just wasn't taking much damage. From there we still CC'ed the casters, but I tanked all the melee, I think only 4 at a time at most. Rest of the run went smoothly, wiped once one the last boss due to early clothie deaths but got him down the second time, and before any prisoners had been killed.

In addition to attunement, my efforts were rewarded with http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29254, which I'm now going to use for everything except raid bosses, as sadly the warrior-equivalent http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29239 yet again beat them out for mitigation.

On the whole, the difficulty was about on par with normal SH the first time I tanked it. Next time I'm definitely going to try full AoE, so get out there and show folks why Tankadins rock! ;)

I experienced pretty much the same, went with a holy paladin, an elemental shaman, a mage and a balance druid, after a few pulls we just stopped bothering to sheep adn aoe'd the place down. had a single wipe on that damned ogre boss because I still can't figure out how to tank him, but still made it in plenty of time and killed the executioner before he killed the first prisoner. I've a feeling I'll have to do a LOT of runs to get everyone in the guild attuned to the Eye, as I suspect people will want me to aoe tank rather than taking a warrior or druid, but at least it won't be so bad. oh, and the healer was completely drunk as well, it was ridiculously easy.

One thing I've tried on the ogre boss is to try to go light on aggro at the beginning because my theory is that he swaps your threat with someone elses. As soon as he switches targets I have the hunter MD me and I hit AW and I can grab him back almost immediately. Just have your dps proceed as normal but try not to make your threat lead be so significant. It has worked 3 runs for me now.

Did they nerf heroics in general?

There wasn't any across the board mechanic change to nerf heroics, but the patch notes read as a laundry list of various heroic nerfs. Slave Pens and Shattered Halls are the only heroics I've run since the patch, and both wre significantly wasier than they were pre-patch.

Botanica got hit hard with the nerf bat too.. I swear that place was harder in normal..

The only place that got buffed.. was the last boss in Sethekk halls.. i can't seem to beat him.. im almost convinced its a bug with his aggro.. ive tried bubbling and realeasing through an aoe so i could hold aggro or at least get it back fast.. and he jus kept going to the dps and one shotting clothies >< very frustrating..

yea heroic shattered halls wasnt that bad at all... only got one attempt in at the second boss tho .. it was late.. we decided we'd pwn it this weekend =D

The last boss in Sethekk Halls blows. Even with a holy paladin and a priest healing (we brought in the priest for a mage, we downed it that attempt but the priest died early on because she'd never done it before), everyone still died except me and the holy paladin, and he and I soloed it from 20%...strangely it stopped AoEing when it was only us two, so it was only a matter of mana :/

The last boss of Sethekk definitely requires more strategy now. We settled on waiting around a pillar after each AE so that I could pick him up, and then moving round to the other side only on the next AE. If you position correctly the blink is never a problem; just have to be careful about bad sheeps.

Yeah, I was trying to tank him last night at like 3am and got sheeped right after his AOE. (Druid healing) Our positioning was bad as well, but it was 3am and we should have quit at 1am.

Ran SH up to Ogre boss just fine yesterday. We also noticed their DPS to be kinda silly, and just had the mage sheep a ranged target, and the hunter try to pull one off me to trap if he could manage (no on that most of the time). I DID use Wizard Oil to speed it up, since I heard what a pain the instance is and wanted to get it over with (I was waiting for 2.1 for the gearupgrades that would give me... Considered myself undergeared pre 2.1), but now I might just as well try to farm those boots. Enough people that still need Trial of the Naaru for this in my guild.

What kind of gear should I expect to need in order to AOE tank the heroic SH effectively? I'm wearing about a third Karazhan tanking epics at the moment. In normal mode, I go with 4/5 Righteous and the Sporeggar shield, and in the single SH-H run I've done (up to the first boss to get Nightbane summoned) I found I wasn't really tough enough to handle it without heavy CC. In particular, the sharpshooters and their scattershot were a rare event but nearly impossible to recover from.

Also, we were running with two healers (druid and shaman). Is that reasonable for a heroic AOE run, assuming we also bring two very strong damage dealers?

I expect I will be wanted to do a lot of SSC attunement runs, if I can pull this off, so I want to be able to get it done as reliably as possible.

.. though it's showing my healbot gear at the moment. :(
