Comprehensive List of Bosses With Parry Haste Enabled

Postby Jerey-Darkspear » Sun Sep 06, 2009 11:21 am

This information is missing. I've searched all over these forums, official forums, and wherever Google sent me with no definitive results. I'm going through and manually parsing combat logs for parry events but wouldn't mind having others assist me with confirmation snippets for each boss. Personally, I'm looking to see if the majority of the bosses parry haste. If they do, then I will value Expertise a lot higher than I did before as a result of Theck's analysis on expertise. If only a couple bosses parry haste though, I can't justify socketing expertise where I usually socket agility.

An example format for a confirmation post would be as follows:
Gormok the Impaler - Parry Haste Enabled

Attack speed of roughly 1.8 seconds with no player parries...
Code: Select all
[20:08:35.078] Gormok the Impaler hits Notforgiven Parry
[20:08:36.906] Gormok the Impaler hits Notforgiven Parry

Attack speed of roughly 1.2 seconds after two player parries...
Code: Select all
[20:08:44.890] Gormok the Impaler hits Notforgiven Parry
[20:08:45.359] Notforgiven Holy Vengeance Gormok the Impaler Parry
[20:08:45.734] Strombolli hits Gormok the Impaler Parry
[20:08:46.093] Gormok the Impaler hits Notforgiven 4604 (A: 740)

I'll try to link to each confirmation post. Would like some opinions on whether it matters if the boss is in 10-man or 25-man. I'm thinking it shouldn't, but I wouldn't put it past Blizzard to do something like that.

Lord Jaraxxus

Postby Jerey-Darkspear » Sun Sep 06, 2009 1:00 pm

Oi. It is much more difficult to prove that parry haste is disabled than to prove that it's enabled!

Lord Jaraxxus - Parry Haste Disabled

Attack speed of roughly 2.3 seconds with no parry...
Code: Select all
[20:29:30.859] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven Parry
[20:29:33.171] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven 10079 (B: 2263)

Attack speed of roughly 2.4 seconds with no parry...
Code: Select all
[20:28:55.234] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven 14592
[20:28:57.656] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven Dodge

Attack speed of roughly 2.5 seconds with parry...what?!
Code: Select all
[20:29:33.171] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven 10079 (B: 2263)
[20:29:34.812] Notforgiven hits Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:29:35.625] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven Dodge

Attack speed of roughly 2.4 seconds with parry...erm?
Code: Select all
[20:29:09.812] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven Parry
[20:29:12.046] Yiffy hits Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:29:12.187] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven Dodge

And the one that convinced me that it's disabled for LJ, assuming that casts reset his swing timer and it restarts as soon as the last cast is over...

Attack speed of roughly 2.3 seconds with many parries...
Code: Select all
[20:28:45.687] Lord Jaraxxus Fel Lightning Strombolli 9314 (R: 1067)
[20:28:45.921] Strombolli hits Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:28:46.203] Tonystarks hits Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:28:47.187] Yiffy hits Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:28:47.375] Notforgiven hits Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:28:48.015] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven 10498

Found one that fit Theck's recommendation. Attack speed of roughly 2.5 seconds with two parries...
Code: Select all
[20:29:42.328] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven 13439 (A: 409)
[20:29:43.843] Yiffy Lava Lash Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:29:44.734] Yiffy Windfury Attack Lord Jaraxxus Parry
[20:29:44.906] Lord Jaraxxus hits Notforgiven Parry

He casts a lot, so maybe that's why they disabled parry haste on him.

Neither of the first two Jaraxxus parry examples prove much of anything. If his base attack speed is 2.3, then his minimum attack speed is 20% of that, or 0.46 seconds. Thus, any attack that gets parried with about half a second or less left on his swing timer won't result in any parry haste thanks to the way parry mechanics work.

To prove that he does or doesn't parry, you want to find an example where he parries an attack very quickly after his last attack. For example, if he parries an attack within half a second of his last melee swing, then you should see the full 40% haste (or 1 second) if he has parry-haste enabled. If you don't see a 1-second reduction of his swing timer in this case, then it's pretty certain he has it disabled.

I'm not sure what to make of the last example. I'm fairly certain that casting resets the swing timer, but on the other hand I seem to remember examples of bosses casting a large spell and then meleeing within a second after it completes. Taken at face value, your parse would indicate that Jaraxxus doesn't parry-haste though.

Good point. Looked a little lower in the log and found a valid example.

I was under the impression that parry haste is enabled by default, and only disabled when there is a good reason for it, and then it will be anounced by blizzard. So the first thing to look for is those blue posts.

Although I must say I can see the value of confirming this on toc bosses to get a better picture for our current gearing.

Kologarn -

Kologarn does not have parry haste as Kologarn cannot parry - http://www.wowmeteronline.com/combat/7224559#damageout

If you go down the melee DPS hover over misses it breaks it down between miss, dodge and parry. You won't find any parries on Kologarn himself. Both Spacoin and Rishi have a parry listed -

21:40:38.921 Doomhark's Whirlwind was parried by Rubble.
21:39:45.343 Rishi's was parried by Rubble.

Which makes sense, I guess. For one thing, everyone's got to attack him from the front, so it would unevenly penalize melee dps.

Thematically, I guess he doesn't have a weapon to parry with (not that it's stopped other bosses). And I'm not sure you can claim to parry with your hands when they're being actively attacked by the raid. :P

New blue post

We just hotfixed the following changes to the Trial of the Grand Crusader (aka Heroic mode).

Northrend Beasts

Fixed a bug where the flag that prevents a creature from gaining attack speed after a parry was inadvertently left off Gormok the Impaler. This bug is fixed in normal mode as well.

So as of this hotfix, Gormok should no longer parry haste if I'm interpreting that correctly.

Updated. Checking the twins now. Updating this post once I find something in the logs to reference in the first post.

Thanks for those parses kahalm.

The Onyxia and Twins parses are conclusive. So Ony=on, Twins=off.

The Anub'arak ones are as well, though the reasoning might be a bit tougher to spot.

The first two show his base swing speed as 1.806 and 1.783 respectively.

The third contains a parry 1.144 seconds into the swing, when there's 656 ms (~37%) left on the swing timer. Technically, this should reduce the time until the next swing by 17%, or 306 ms. I think this is probably good enough to reasonably confirm that he doesn't parry haste, but we're getting close to the limit imposed by latency and combat log uncertainty there. Ideally we'd like to see a parse with a parry less than 20% into the swing so we see a full 40% reduction or nothing.

The fourth doesn't contain two boss swings, but it's the most conclusive of all of them. The parry occurs 1.471 seconds before the next attack, or 81.6% of the swing timer. Even if the previous attack was coincident with the parry, that's only a 20% reduction of swing timer when we should have seen a full 40%. So despite not knowing the actual length of the swing, the fact that he has more than 60% of his swing timer left after the parry strongly suggests he doesn't parry haste.
