reskinning?
ok, i've heard about this and know literally nothing about it. i assume it simply makes your characters armor look like something else, but only to you and not the general WoW populace. that close?
also, is it bannable? if so, why?
and finally, if not bannable, how does one go about doing it. like for example, if i wanted to see my self in T2 all the time?

I put this in the original post, but I'll copy it here:
I don't believe it is bannable, because it is only on the client side, and even if it were, there is really no way for Blizzard to tell you are doing it, anyways, for the very same reason.
It also affects every piece of gear that you switch the skins of, not just the ones you are wearing. So, if you switch your ZA shoulders to look like the t4 ones, every person that wears the ZA shoulders will look like they are wearing the pally t4 ones.

Every item has an item id and a skin id. Blizzard takes a hashcode for each pair in the client. If you change the skin id, it will produce a different hashcode.
If the client ever sends your current set of hashcodes to the server, the server can easily check for improper pairings. I don't know how they do this. Once possible way is that they use their process monitor, whatsitcalled, something like privacy invader, to periodically run a quick scan over a small file that contains these hashcodes. if a checksum fails (the hashcodes aren't the same) it probably sends a message of some type directly to blizz.
Whether they do that or not, I know if I designed it, I could have.
It is against the EULA, so I would not recommend it.

Well, that's interesting. I know the big 'skinning' issue revolved around some Asian gamer making a vid of himself in pvp with the skin from some mob that looks like the Tiger boss from ZG. Maybe it was a more permanent skin of an item proc or something... anyways, that is where this all came from.
The issue Blizzard would have with it is people would reskin gnomes to have tauren skins, thereby making them much easier to target, which could give people an advantage in pvp.

I'm a clothes-horse myself, and tend to be picky about my look. And did re-skins prior to the expansion. I have recently been learning work-arounds to do it again.
The best information came from goggling "warcraft nude skin mod", borrowing their techinques but using more tasteful skins.
And ya, be aware of the eula risks.

B. You agree that you will not (i) modify or cause to be modified any files that are a part of the Program or the Service; (ii) create or use cheats, bots, "mods", and/or hacks, or any other third-party software designed to modify the World of Warcraft experience; or (iii) use any third-party software that intercepts, "mines", or otherwise collects information from or through the Program or the Service. Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may update the Program with authorized patches and updates distributed by Blizzard, and Blizzard may, at its sole and absolute discretion, allow the use of certain third party user interfaces.
It is bannable. Your chance of being caught, however, is slim. I personally only use my re-skins when I'm making movies.
I don't like to give advice that leads to peoples' accounts being wtfpwnt, so I'll just leave you with this: look up .blp and .mpq on wikipedia.
