Tanking Aura of Choice

Postby Velaegis » Thu Aug 27, 2009 12:34 pm

Personally, I rarely go out of Retribution Aura, but recently I began to wonder about Devotion. I've heard that Ret is better because of the obvious added threat, but also that, with Improved Devotion Aura, it can be great at extending your life. So... discuss!

(P.S., I just noticed that Divine Protection has changed. Does it still drop aggro? I thought I'd sneak that in here because I don't think that merits its own thread. )

No Divine Protection doesn't drop aggro, it's now our version of Shield Wall. And you should probably usually use Devotion Aura, yes, since a retri's is better and the armour is quite significant.
If it is weak, kill it before it gets stronger. If it is strong, weaken it.

Devotion aura is the tanking aura of choice. Armor increase + built in added healing. (Assuming you talented into it.)

Agree...Devo is better unless you overgear something considerably. I used Retri aura exclusively in TBC, and it sucked back then but was still better than Devo. Now I use devo full time and have talented it. It's pretty good.

Only time I switch to retri is running gauntlets that won't get me killed, but that I need to keep more aggro than a HOT generates on me, and need to run like hell and not stop to pick up mobs (and a ret pally isn't there to provide it). It's great for that.

I run devo aura almost exclusively in raids, although I do swap to concentration aura when boss melee damage is minimal and raid aoe damage is high, assuming the appropriate resist aura is already covered. For 5 mans I tend to run retribution aura.

Threat from retribution aura (and thorns, for that matter) is pretty marginal for a paladin, since it doesn't proc on a blocked hit.

It doesn't? Interesting ... I must have missed that part of the FAQ.

Devo should be up almost all the time

I'll switch to a resist aura when needed, or ret on a fight I outgear.

Other than that, I use devo almost exclusively.

Ret was used a lot more back in TBC when threat was a bit more of an issue.

I believe they changed the 6% healing to work no matter what aura you're using.

Correct. You can now get that bonus from any aura, giving you more freedom to choose.

Devo aura still isn't amazing, but it's not bad. I sit at about 24.5k armor unbuffed for 59.6% mitigation. Devo aura adds 1807 when talented, adding 1.7% reduction. That's 4.2% less damage taken. Not amazing, but not bad.

That's really interesting, I had no idea. I don't believe it is in the FAQ... someone should throw it in.

That pretty much seals the deal for me.

EDIT: "seals" the deal. ololololol

Scratch that, I've been soloing too much lately. It procs off partially blocked hits, so it's all good.

I have a hard time believing that the damage reduction from imp devotion aura isn't a must have for more physical damage dealing fights. There is no reason to set it to a percentage damage reduction because it will be different for all of us, based on the mechanics of armor, however the damage reduction you do receive is significant none the less.

What do you mean by "partially?"

Well, after using Devo Aura last night, I think it made a pretty huge difference. You learn something new ever day!

That your block-value is lower than the hit received.

"X hits Velaegis for 0 (149 blocked)" will not trigger ret / thorns

"X2 hits Velaegis for 8030 (2500 blocked)" will

So, technically, you should run ret when you are UNDERgeared, because you will proc ret with an unfull block (that doesn't match the brain syntax right)? I have run devo since Wrath, and never even thought of ret again. I think I will check it out for 5's though, now they get run through so fast...
