"threat value" and EH modification of RatingBuster

Postby culhag » Tue Jul 28, 2009 5:57 pm

I have made a modification of RatingBuster to add new stat summary lines showing how much threat and effective health a piece of equipment will give you.

What it does is take each threat stat on the item, weight them using the values Theck calculated in the Matlab thread*, and sum them in a convenient line in the tooltip, so you can easily compare two items for the best threat output.
*found in this post.

Things of note :
• You should buff yourself with Kings to see the full value of strength and agility, or alternately you could use the RatingBuster AlwaysBuffed module.
• Stat values are fixed and won't change according to your gear. For example, Hit won't be valued more when you have more Strength.
• Hit and Expertise will lose value when you get over the caps.
• Sometimes Hit and Expertise values are not updated immediately when you change your total equipped hit/expertise and you are around the cap. A simple fix I found is to remove/buff myself with Kings and the values will be correctly recalculated.
• Only the "regular" stats are counted, so you shouldn't use it to compare weapons. (except maybe if they have the same dps and speed)
• Check this post if you want to take into account a racial expertise bonus and you're not afraid to go edit a file.

RatingBuster mod for WoW 4.0.3a *updated 18 December 2010*

To install, simply unzip the archive in your addon folder.

To display the threat and/or EH summary, you'll first have to activate them in the options, in stat summary => tank stats.

Much simpler to do the same thing with Pawn isn't it :o? No rewriting of mods required.

I'm not sure it can change the weighting of hit/exp/block when you're near the cap though, nifty having RatingBuster doing that.

I didn't know it, but apparently it doesn't handle hit and expertise caps, much less the block DR.

If you're capping the weighting of particular stats though, doesn't that make it harder to use for gear choices instead of easier? Like if you're wearing a pair of bracers say that have hit on them and you're hit capped with them on, won't you end up devalueing any bracers that also have hit on them? Even though switching to a pair of bracers with the same amount of hit but improved other stats would be an upgrade, not a downgrade? Or is it smart enough to notice what slot the item is for and whether your current gear in that slot is contributing to reaching the cap you're at, to only zero out the amount of the stat that's over cap after the switch?

No it doesn't check that, but in that case I'd suggest having both pieces in your bag to better see what each would bring.

You just made my week. I've been thinking about doing exactly this for some time now (along with an EH value).

Looking forward to giving this a whirl!

Updated for WoW 3.2, based on RatingBuster's latest version.

*NEW* added an Effective Health line (which I think RB should be doing by default, and wasn't hard to add)
*UPDATED* all the threat coefficients updated using Thecks latest calculations.

Possibly one thing of note, "you have to be a paladin"?

I know this sounds stupid but I assume it is paladin only as based on Thecks work, but not sure what shows up on say my warrior alt and wouldn't want anyone to gear their warrior around it.

Yeah it's obviously only meant for paladin tanks.
The value it calculates would mean nothing for another class.

Do you have a reference for the math you used for calculating EH? Would like to see how some of these numbers are derived.

I err... I wrote something I thought would be correct, but I admit I haven't checked with the established formula.

What I do at the moment is I compare your EH with and without the object.
Here's the code :
Code: Select all
(currHealth + objHealth) * (1/(1-StatLogic:GetReductionFromArmor(effectiveArmor + objArmor))) - currHealth * (1/(1-StatLogic:GetReductionFromArmor(effectiveArmor)))

I asked this in Theck's thread, but you must of missed it. Do you change the value of expertise for threat after the soft cap?
If it is weak, kill it before it gets stronger. If it is strong, weaken it.

Yes. To quote the OP :
• Hit and Expertise will lose value when you get over the caps.
• BV and Str will lose value when you're over 2400 BV.
