How many do you bring?

You don't need more than three and I'm sure there are Paladins here who only need one OT for the fight. I'm not to that point yet though.

VR can be one tanked but you really want to bring 3 tanks if you can, lots of spelldamage helps but you will always have the casino knockback factor.

I was asked to go with a guild to there last night. I felt though that I would put a poor showing for my EQ isnt up to date even with potting out and all. So I turned it down. 3 trips to kara with no drops :( I most likely should of went just for the experience but I am picky to make sure I make a good impression for paladin tanks as my server is very hesitant and it was a different guild (best alliance raiders on the server).

What is normally the gear check like on this fight?

i also would like to know this. i am in the process of working on a bigger SD set and would like to try tanking VR for the guild im apping to, but dont want to do it if im doomed from the start.


EDIT: dammit i logged in my ret gear. tanking stats are roughly (from memory): 12.2K HP, 14.9K armor, 22% dodge, 16% parry, 19ish% block, 318 block value, 200 spell damage. all unbuffed.

i wish my guild would let me in first, hell... i wish i would get a misdirect at least every once in a while :( .. all the love goes to the warrior.

i giggle inside every time he loses aggro, he gets on me, he calls for a misdirect and it does nothing to help him lol.... we had 3 tanks on our last VR Kill, and the 3rd tank never even got a chance to tank him, infact his threat was terribly low - he was showing up on my omen popping in and out of my threat list on the bottem of the few that were showing.

But yea, i believe if the paladin goes in first he's set.

tonight i had my first try on VR, fairly undergeared with less than 300 spelldamage.
frankly i couldnt get aggro at all; this was partially my own fault for forgetting to jotc until 70%, and also because of the other tanks (we were using 4 for some reason) got misdirects and i didnt. its important to try to get aggro quickly in VR, i have found.
because a large portion of tankadin threat is reflective damage, moreso than other tanks, the sooner you can get him hitting you, the longer you are likely to last, in a somewhat ironic sense. tonight i couldnt get aggro at the start (although i came very close), and by 70% or so, the other tanks had a big enough threat lead that i just couldnt catch up.

If you have got a tankadin, he should be the initial tank. Every other solution is kinda stupid.

Last night, I stacked up to 600 spell dmg (5/5 T4, HHM spell dmg ring, and flask of blinding light) just for kicks because a warrior tank will be the beginning tank and he'll be getting MDs from 2 hunters. I was about 2% crushable, but didn't take a single crushing blow luckily.

From the first few knockbacks and the moment he tasted my holy shield, VR sticked to me like glue because I managed get a stack of SoV with wings on.

The fight ended with the following words on vents from raid leader.

"DPS watch your threat! you're out aggroing ALL 3 warriors (we did this right after Al'ar hence the tanks inflation)... erm, nvm Demi got him good, just MD to him instead and burn down real quick!"

We 1 shotted him with me tanking till the end. Talk about tanking e-peen.

sacrificed much stam for spelldmg and...it is a good idea to have at least HS rank 1 up sometimes :roll:

We took him last night with 3 tanks, me and 2 warriors. I had about 350 something spellpower (flask, oil heh :roll: ) as starting tank I had him to about 35% when a warrior got a turn, back to me after knockback of course, then to other warrior, then me again and so on until dead. Winged JotC+SoV makes for some spectacular threat tbh, even with that 'low' spelldamage :)

I finally got my guild to let me go in first. We have killed him, but they always cry for JoL instead of JotC. /cry

The warriors are also starting to cry about me eating multiple knockbacks and VR moving slightly sometimes. Is there anything I can do to stop him from moving? It only happens if I get knocked back and am still first on his threat list.

I'm a sad sad tankadin.

I tanked VR and held him for 2/3rds of the fight, until losing him. Our dps sucked, and kept dying, but we got him to 9%. So I figure we'll down him tomorrow. We're also adding dps tomorrow. I farmed 2000 more LC rep, upgraded to GoUS, farmed 12 more badges, upgraded to the badge expertise threat bracers, respecced, dropped spellwarding/PoJ for improved Judgment, 3/5 reckoning, and went in expecting to pwn. 540 spelldam, a decent amount of spellhit, some +hit, some expertise. I failed. Miserably. Even with Destruction Potion/wings combinations. SoV kept falling off. I didn't understand. Everyone complained the threat ceiling was too low. VR pulled off the tanks twice before tanks were able to get him back. It wasn't me who got him back.

Hours later, I found out while tanking heroic UB, My mace skill was 325/350. Imagine what it was back then. 310? 300?

A very frustrated, sad tankadin indeed. Utterly botching my chance to shine. Oh well, I'll show them next try, hopefully next week.

Do yourself a favour, goto Blasted Lands and find one of those servants of allistarj/whatever, those mobs that that don't die unless you have some quest to shatter their crystal nearby. Get yourself a set of vendor whites of the appropriate weapon, judge light, and smack it for an hour or so.

I've tanked VR with anywhere between 200 and 400 spell damage, and that does the trick just fine as long as I get to start the fight. It took me a while to convince the warrior tanks to let me frisbee him and get beaten on for a little while, but once they gave in, I started holding him on me through the majority of the fight.

Whenever he's not on me, I pop mana pots every cooldown. Mmm, delicious blue candy.

Holding aggro on VR is based purely on luck.
If you dodge all the knockbacks, you can hold him for 100% of the time
If you get knocked back twice, any tank will lose aggro.

So people saying they can hold him for 100% with 1000 spelldamage are in fact just lucky that they dodged a few knockbacks.

Once you lose aggro, the only thing you can do as a pally are :

- hope for a misdirection from a hunter ( this won't help much even )
- chug mana pots ( you'll need to chug 4 pots ) and use wings as soon as you can , use the heavy duty threat spells.

A paladin with +-400 spelldamage chain-drinking mana pots *can* keep up with a GOOD protection warrior even in OT position, if you know what you're doing. obviously more spelldamage will help, but the key is the knockbacks, so stack on dodge :)

Roughly true. A simple spreadsheet shows that worst-case, 1000 tps will envelope at 120k threat total. That's if you eat every knockback. The envelope gets hit after about 5 minutes, but really after 3 or so you're within 10% of that.

If your dps is all about equivalent, you can kill him with 120k threat per person, I think. It'd be tight, though. You'd probably want a lot of rogues.

I chug the free mana pots for this, but I end up just doing everyone a favor and keeping JoL up for our melee. (Just chugging mana pots isn't enough to keep up JoR and consecrate 4 in between cooldowns when I don't have JoW or a spriest, so I have to dip into my dark runes) The first time I did this, I worked out that I provided about 200k healing, with presumably very low overheal. I only get a few rounds taking hits this way, but I don't drop out of the running and I assume I get some misdirects once in a while. We usually have about 5 hunters and only 3 tanks, and we just tell them to MD the lowest tank of the 3 every so often.
