How survivable would a ret pally be if they "tanked" the fire adds and tried to burst them down ASAP near where I tanked the drakes?

Probably be OK unless he got unlucky with a few popping up during a wave and getting enraged. I only did 10 man 3D once, but I found that the number of elementals you get is really really variable, there will definitely be attempts where with his ability to kill them quickly, he'll have long stretches of none at all. I know I was able to help out with DPSing the drakes a fair amount on a few of our tries. The whelps may be problematic, he may want to swap to sword and board for that.

Well I was hoping I could grab the whelps with Tenebron on me. Then pop DP after Shadron lands (Tene should be dead or close to it by then).

We will give it a go tonight. It is worth a try.

So you are thinking like a hybrid of the two tank approach? Having your raid mostly in and around the melee folks so that you guys can get the adds pulled in, but just having your DPS pally FF them down right away? That sounds fairly reasonable.

Although we might end up losing out on the ret pally for tonight's attempts (would grab a fury warrior in his stead). So I wonder who would make the best person to deal with the fire adds in that case? The fury warrior or me as ret? He has a very solid tank set and I have a very solid ret set... so either way works as far as gear is concerned.

I am leaning on me taking the adds since as ret I can insta FoL, have 2 ranged taunts, and can keep JoL on the fire add I am bursting down.

I am assuming he would have little trouble tanking the drakes+whelps as prot.

Yeah, I'd say that is a big benefit. You can also keep sacred shield on yourself and use divine storm.
