Sorry for the general noobish question - I've played a mage since launch, and have FINALLY decided to branch out to a new class (and new raid role). If you have more defense than 540, does this give you any additional miss rating beyond the 5.6% miss rating you received when you bumped the crit off the table? Say, for the sake of argument, you hit around 812 defense rating (that is 122 above the minimum needed for 540 defense), would you then have 6.6% change to miss, plus the additional 1% dodge/crit/block? If this is the case, why bother stacking anything but the most defense you could find?

Oh thank God a guide to this tanking malarky that I can understand. Brilliant guide, now I'm off to tank things (I can't believe I've finally become one fo the meat shields my lock loves so dearly
)
1 mob or 10 I'll tank the lot (prefer 10, better mana regen)

Yes. Due to diminishing returns, take what dodge/parry you can get on your gear and gem/enchant defense as needed. Don't forget Strength and Stamina though.

pretty sure you flipped crit and hit in your attack table... crit gets pushed off the table before normal hits do... so crit should be at the far end...
someone double-check me on this?
also -I might suggest putting in that crushing blows weren't completely removed from the game, just removed from mobs 3 levels higher than you - mobs 4 levels higher can still crush... seen this question many times - just to make sure people don't get confused reading this
(edit : spelling)

I would put in here that for right now - this is the Judgement of choice for tanks... even though ret pallies will get more healing out of it... as prot - you get all the aggro generated by those heals... so this is what prot pallys are using right now to generate more threat...
someone please correct me if this has been fixed already...
Light
This one scales with the casters attack and spellpower so if there are a bunch of paladins in the raid the one with best stats casts this.

@ phaqueue - If you use avoidence to push crit off the table, it's the last to go.
I've added that thing about light in there.

Yes, having more defense then 540 will give you more +miss/dodge/parry/block but the returns from enchants/item bonuses/etc for +miss/dodge/parry/block generally give far better returns then you would get for over-stacking +defense.

"The 100 sided Dice.
Let’s say you have 400 defense and 10% chance to dodge/block/parry, the attack table would then look like this:
Very new to tanking, much less the attack table, so please bare with me as I'm sure I'm missing something small here.
When you said "Let's say you have 400 def..." - it has thrown me for a loop. I thought we had a 5% base chance to miss an incoming attack. With 400 extra def, that's like 16% (400 * .04) more miss yet your table has stayed static at 5%. Or do we start out with 400 def which gives us that base 5% chance? But then the 1 def skill = .04% conversion doesn't jive.
What am I missing?
Let’s say you have 400 defense and 10% chance to dodge/block/parry, the attack table would then look like this:
- 0.01-5.00 = miss
5.01-15.00 = dodge
15.01-25.00 = parry
25.01-35.00 = block
35.01-40.00 = crit
40.01+ = hit

We start out with 400 defense (get 5 more defense per level) until 80 for a total of 400 defense possible at 80 with nothing on our gear.
So the 5% base chance to miss and the 400 defense are exactly the same thing and follow different rules.
To be uncrittable there needs to be be an additional 5.6% to miss which is where the 1 def skill = .04% conversion comes in. This all comes solely from gear.

Forgive me is someone commented on this, did a general search but I imagine if it was mentioned it was within another thread and I couldn't find it in the immediate stickies.
But it goes back to this: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/threa ... 5321&sid=1
And I never came across this info and it never dawned on me but 2 days ago or something I asked the warrior tank to put vigilance up on me to help with something and during that raid didn't have the right amount of pallies or something so I was pulling single target BoSanc on me.
Which I then noticed the Error: "more powerful spell already active". Which then light bulbed Vigilance, but I'm only guessing for single target and not Greater BoSanc. I haven't tested it.
edit: I said "something" way to something.
2nd Edit: hmmm had greater and vigilance up.
