if i am not wrong, Nax will be the first 10 man to go to.

Is 540 defense necessary (if you don't want to be crit) or can it be started at a lower value.

If you want to tank a boss and don't wanna be crit, you need 540 Defense. If you want to tank adds (lvl 82 and lower) and don't wanna be crit, you need 535 most of the time. That's pretty much all the leeway you have if you want to ensure uncrittability.

tbh there's no excuse to not get 540. As soon as I dinged, I started grabbing the crafted gear (tempered saronite/daunting) and was 540 before I knew it.

Only trouble is staying uncrit when you start getting drops!

No need for crafted gear. I had no BS-Gear and hit 540 Defense a couple of level 80 and easy heroics later. Just gem everything at the start with pure defense and you hit cap easily. The further you progress into heroic content the more hard defense you get on gear and eventually you can replace defense gem with def/stam avoidance/stam.

A week into progression raiding I am at 551 defense and 33K HP raidbuffed.
