What am I missing.

Postby Merrel0525 » Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:58 am

Hi. I am fairly new to the tanking thing. I have been reading the forums and trying to follow the advice that you guys are giving. My gear pre WOTK was pretty crappy. So I made a point to go out and get the Cobalt/anything that had +defense rating/block chance. So I have a have decent defense raiting. But I can't seem to get the numbers up to uncrushable.

So what I was wondering what am I missing here's a link to my armor/character. http://armorylite.com/us/Aerie+Peak/Merrel

Don't worry about it. You're not likely to reach the block cap preraid in wotlk and you certainetly don't need to worry about it while leveling. Just get the saronite set once you get into the upper 70s and enjoy the ride.

Forget everything you have read about uncrushability. We don't need it in WotLK anymore. The only number you need to remember now is 540 defense for uncritability.

Ah. So there isn't anything called uncrushable for us anymore? Just uncrittable. So I need 540 defense by the time I reach lvl 80 correct? Yeah I saw the tempered sardonite set. I already picked up the shield for when I get to lvl 73.

Uncrushable has been rechristianed Block capped as there are no crushing blows from raid bosses any more. It is a good goal but not required for T7 and 5 man tanking.

Ok so besides getting defense up to 540, what else should I do? Raise my parry and dodge? How would I go about doing that? Enchants? Or should I just wait until lvl 80 to do all this stuff?

Gearing proirities go like this:

Defense till uncritable ==> defense and block rating till block capped ==> your choice of stamina, str, BV, EH, and/or avoidance (defense ~= dodge>parry).

ok I know I am revamping my old post. But I just want to get something straight. The 540 defence is unbuffed as in what you have before you add the + from items or is it total combined? Just want to make sure

You cant get to 540 defence without items, so its combined.

On being block capped; I'm of the opinion that while it's not "required", is there really such a thing for a tank? My first two goals in LK was to get defense capped, then block capped. The rest comes from the gear you get along the way.

"Block Capped" = what used to be "Uncrushable" = 102.4% combined Miss, Dodge, Parry, and Block. Currently it's kind of hard to tell if you're block capped or not due to diminishing returns on avoidance (which don't show up on your character sheet). I think there's an addon or two floating around that can tell you what your avoidance is after diminishing returns (maybe Tankadin?) but I honestly haven't looked into it much because it honestly isn't that big of a deal.

Your real post-DR dodge and parry are shown. It's just miss chance that isn't shown post-DR.
