Account Hacked... How do I feel safe again?

Postby Elixirs » Fri Sep 26, 2008 6:20 pm

I consider myself extremely computer savvy, yet I cannot even come up with a way that anyone could have stolen my account information. I do not go to suspicious websites. I do not share my account. I get my mods from Wow Matrix (and have not installed a new mod for months).

I ordered the authenticator from the Blizzard Store as soon as I could. But I have a few days before it gets here... and I do not know if its fool proof.

How can I protect myself? I've run Spybot and Kaspersky and cleaned out everything with those. I didn't see anything other than the normal cookies that show up.

I saw that the hacker requested my password while I was at work today. Luckily when I got home he hadn't accessed it again.

Seriously, there's no other way to be 100% sure to be safe after being keylogged.

There is pretty much no possible way anyone can hack the authenticators, fortunately.

There are ways to get around that sort of thing, but the folks who try to steal accounts en masse are never going to employ them. You'll be safe with the key fob.

I was hacked recently too and never found anything conclusive. I'm guessing either my password was brute forced or I got phished on a late night and never realized it.

One thing that helps if you haven't been hacked yet is to have your pw saved in a text file and copy and paste it when you log in.

If they get access to that text file then you have bigger problems because that means they have enough control over your computer that losing gold in WoW should be the least of your worries.

type it randomly..

cut it into sections.. then type those sections backwards

Like.. password123

123 go back to the start
word back to the start
pass

so any keylogger sees it as 123wordpass

Thats the method I use to do mine

Keyloggers can read it even if it is copy pasted.

Even typing it out in random order supplies with the characters.

That is the first I have heard of that, from what I understood keyloggers log keystrokes, asked several programmers if copy and pasting the pw would get around the WoW keyloggers and the ones that played WoW said that is what they do to get around the issues with keyloggers. They also leave their account name saved so there is information for keylogger to pickup on being typed into WoW login.

Proper keyloggers will not log the pressed keys, will just check the data sent.

Most keyloggers only record keystrokes, and copy-pasting your password can avoid them. On the other hand, it is possible for a trojan or keylogger to read the clipboard, so it's not guaranteed to keep you safe.

Outside of keyloggers, there are other ways that people use to steal passwords as well. Phishing is obvious- never enter your wow account name and/or password anywhere outside of the game (or blizzard's website, but doublecheck the URL). Additionally, don't use your WoW password for signing up to forums- it's possible for the person who set up the forums to set them up in such a way that they can get at your password. I know some people who got their Guild Wars accounts stolen in this way- the person who set up their guild forums used the email addresses and passwords to steal the accounts of people that used the same info as they had for their GW account.

Copy'n'pasting = a joke, don't even bother. It's trivial for them to read the clipboard to read off the password. Stop recommending this to people. It's a placebo nothing more.
Typing in a random order, you're still giving them the characters.
Saving your account name is also pointless, it's all over your warcraft install folder and trivial to read that!

Keeping your computer and your password(don't use it ANYWHERE else) secure is the only way.

Remember, once a malware program is on your computer it can do *anything* and read *any* file and attack any computer also on your local network.

If hacked, completely reinstall of the computer, don't connect it to any network(internet & any local network if you have one) until its firewall is enabled and you've installed AV+spyware software.
Also if you use internet banking etc change password there and check for any transactions you don't remember making yourself. Change passwords for every other website you use.

A key fob is a great and damned near fullproof way around hackers abusing your account, you can still have your PC hacked, but your WoW account will be safe.

Unsecure DKP and guild sites can be a problem too.

An example...

EMail for game: example@example.net
EMail for guild forum: example@example.net
Password for both: password

Hacker gets access to insecure site. Does hacker stuff, finds EMail address and your password. Then enters the details into your EMail login page, access! Now to reset the password trying your character name, alias history, etc or just looking through your EMail archives to find clues for your account name. Then reset password, change it, in he goes...hell maybe even try the same password as your EMail and guild site.

Saw it somewhere but required SQL Injection and any decent web software guards against that.

General gist of it: Keep your game password and email password different.
