New Tankadin geared for heroics? oom questions
Hi there Land of Pallys,
I'm a new Tankadin. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-shee ... Notrentaur
Figured I'd throw my armory at you up front. This is my first 70 alt (main=t6lock)!! I am 70 now and starting to gear myself up so that I can get into kara and start raiding cause I love to raid.
I have been wary to try to get into heroic groups because I am not sure if I am geared up enough to be able to tank heroics. I know that when I tank some regular instances (BM especially...) I tend to go oom pretty quickly because I am paranoid about my threat and I don't get hit very hard. Does that mean that I am over geared for regular instances? When I have holy shield up and redoubt procs I have about 110% avoidance which is a bit much probably right? Sometimes I just stop using HS so that I can get hit to get more mana back but then my threat gen declines.
Am I geared up enough for heroics? I would like to start getting badges so that I can get some major upgrades. Also, as far as going oom, do you find yourself keeping up SoW/JoW or is that just nerfing my threat more than it needs to be?
Thanks a bunch for your help.
Note: I have been running mech/bm/bot for those righteous d3 set pieces but they never want to drop for me =(
Also, any suggestions on other crafted gear that will get me through kara?

Unless you're getting hit hard, it's considered "okay" to not have HS up 100% of the time. Hell, unless it's a boss I basically consecrate/HS full strength once, then down rank after that.
You have a TON of avoidance/mitigation. I can't see your armory at work but I'm assuming you're lacking a bit of spell damage/stamina at for dodge/def/parry/block?
When I get home in a few hours I'll take a look at your armory and see what your gear is.
If you're worried about threat, get more spell damage.

First thing: Don't count on your reboudt for mitigation, it is unreliable at best, the trick is to get to 102.4% with holy shield up and without reboudt.
I would be unsure to run heroics at your gear level, you could start trying the 'lower' heroics, like Ramparts or Underbog. Get some badges together and get the Tanking Libram first (Libram of Repentance, only 15 badges), it will raise you mitigation with holy shield up by 5.32%. a great help.
Start doing dailies and get a spelldmg weapon like Crystalforged sword and get +40 splldmg enchant on it. It will be enough spll dmg to hold aggro all the way to the end of Kara.
Get Exalted at shattered Sun and get the tanking equip from them.

I spend waaaaaaaay to much on mana potions in BM(well, I was making them till I switched herbing to engineering)
your revered with Keepers of Time
if you can't get the crystal forged sword, get the Continuum Blade... they are about on par, crystal has defense so you don't lose any
Timewarden legs, get them, love them they are your friend for a while
other weapons to consider are
"Seeker's Gavel"(SSO revered)
the PVP gavel I can never remember the name of(have friends/guildmates help get the honor?)
Bracers of the Green Fortress, craftable BoE epic
after you get the easy upgrades
some spell dmg(weapon, gloves)/sta(boots, bracer) enchants wouldn't hurt.. enchants and gems tell a lot about preparedness for heroics/raids

Great thanks for the tips.
Now here is a question about the weapon choice. I had heard that it is preferable for a pally tank to have a weapon with a speed of 2 or less, is that true? Either way I'm working on getting my rep up for those SSO shields and I will start farming av for the s2 mace which will boost my spell dmg significantly.
I tanked heroic bot last night with a fair amount of ease and wasn't getting hit too hard,... granted I had one of my guild healadins with me who is in hyjal gear hehe... made me realize that I need a lot more stam.
Do you think its worth the mats to get the Oathkeeper's Helm made?
Is spell power to gloves > +2% threat? Wouldn't +2% threat scale better than a fixed amount?

keep 2 sets of gear, one gem'd sta other gem'd avoidance?
also enchants will help a LOT, you have minimal(devilshark has one)
I was going to get it made, decided to just train engineering instead and get tankatronics... upto you, with a T6 lock you should be able to farm the gold/mats in /snooze mode, so upto you if you can justify the priceDo you think its worth the mats to get the Oathkeeper's Helm made?

cut and paste from the discussion of it here http://www.failsafedesign.com/maintanka ... php?t=7257
Threat
2% Threat
2% threat will grant you more aggro than +20 spell damage as long as you are generating more than 500 TPS. If you are generating less than 500 threat per second, you are probably not level 70 and shouldn't be worrying about glove enchants anyway.
+20 Spell Damage
20 extra spell damage will net you about an extra 10 TPS. If you are in an AoE tanking situation with your consecration doing 100 damage a tick or higher, you will get more out of this enchant.

Oh I'm dumb and logged out in the wrong weapon. The main weapon I am using is the manawraith blade with +40 spell dmg on it so I have 279 spell dmg right now.
I think that I can farm those mats super easily, especially since this toon is and herbie/miner (was a farming toon...) and farming on snooze mode w/my lock is fun.
So it would appear that +2% threat for single target situations and +20 spell dmg for aoe. Good to know for my 2nd set of gear.
Bracers of the green fortress vs. Bracers of Dignity (from heroic arc)?
Thanks for the suggestions.

You arent ready for heroic yet, its best to put off going into those until you have at least full blues - Green legs and chest will make it much harder.
Get the felsteel legs crafted, or get the KoT revered legs if you're close to that, and get them gemmed with enduring talasites/solid stars and put a leg enchant on them for around 100 stamina more than your current legs.
Get 2 tanking trinkets (Dabri's Enigma is nice and easy to get, as is the regal protector if you have it, or the one that drops in Slabs).
Get the felsteel gloves crafted, with a defense armor kit, and gemmed etc.
Get the bracers of the green fortress crafted, or the Slabs quest one, and enchant with defense.
This stuff should put you on track. I wouldnt head into heroics with less than around 12k health, considering if you're under that you probably arent really trying to get gear yourself.
That said, if ur guildies run kara, ask if you can OT, since you dont need to do much, and you can grab upgrades and badges there
