WoTLK: Changes to spell damage/healing into spellpower
Has anyone seen the changes to old healing maces??
For example:
Pre-WoTLK - http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34199
POST-WoTLK - http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=34199
There you go. A weapon that you can both TANK and HEAL with in one piece!
Seems the new spellpower changes to weapons mean that weapons have an established spellpower value that will translate at around a 1,879 ratio to healing.
For example new Archon's gavel reads:
266 spellpower. This means 266 spell damage and...
266 x 1,879 = 499 (nearly 500. If you do the division 500:266 you get a much larger number)
Awesome change isn't it???
The best tanking weapons were regarded as anything at the same ammount or above the spellpower of Tempest of Chaos. That's why stuff as Tempest of Chaos, Brutal Gladiator's Gavel (or Reign of Misery, which I've seen some people using) are regarded as the best tankadin weapons, right?
Here's a list of the relevant weapons that were changed:
Gavel of Naaru Blessings:
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=34896
Crystal Spire of Karabor:
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=32500
Archon's Gavel:
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=32500
Hammer of Sanctification:
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?search=sanctification
I'm definitly sparing the badges for the Gavel of Naaru Blessings now! Because as soon as WotlK hits, it'll become the weapon to have until lvl80 (unless you've already got something better. I know I don't -_-)
This is also a boon for those who have tankadin armor. Here's why:
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=34382
So the Judicator's Legguards have 47 spellpower. Same spell damage as before, but with the new changes:
47 x 1,879 = around 88 healing
This also allows to heal ourselves a lot better when soloing rather than if the bonus stuck alone at what it was.
A tier 6 paladin standing at around 500-600 unbuffed spell power will be looking at something like 939-1127 healing.
I might be a little off here, but if someone can please say so.

I think spellpower will be situationally useful. In massive aoe situations (any equivalents of Mount Hyjal) then you'll want to boost your consecrate as high as possible.
In smaller multi-mob and single-mob situations then we'll probably want a more conventional weapon.

Be careful when you argue with trolls, lest you become one.

If we weren't I don't understand why would they hadn't taken off the spellpower out of the tanking plate as well.
Retribution aura is getting bonus from spellpower. Seal of Righteousness works off from spell damage as well. And Consecrate (even though we have gained two new abilities that allows us to develop threat).
As far as I've read seems some people are going for a spell damage weapon for AoE purposes and a warrior-type weapon for maintanking, so..
On a completely different note the new changes are awesome for healing classes!
Comparing the healing and spell damage versions of certain sets they now have exactly the same spell power, which is a much better change than converting 1/3 of healing into spell damage. I bet healing classes will be happy.

How does our spell damage compare to that of holy paladins? Just kinda curious how big the difference is even if its just at the level 70 mark.

Havn, I'm assuming you're making that question under WotLK's changes to spellpower.
Let's compare you and a holy paladin with 2000 healing bonus.
You, right now, have 508 spell damage unbuffed.
Basically under the new expansion you'll have 508 spellpower.
This means you'll have 508 spell damage and 508 x 1.879 = around 954 healing bonus.
The holy paladin with 2000 healing will have around 1064 spell damage and the 2000 healing (duh).
Or at least if my calculations are correct that is how things work in WotLK.

Have they changed other weaps that have spell damage and healing on them? S1 and S2 gavels and the such?

The gavels now read spell power as well, although their other stats: spell hit, stamina, intelect and resilience are the same.
This means that S2 gavel will give both 225 spell damage and around 422 healing, for example.

just occurred to me, that spell dmg weapons are finally breaking the 41 dps barrier.
http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/ima ... em_045.jpg
Now, its still not as good as dps weapon (dps wise), but might that tip the balance back towards spell power weapons for us? Maybe a real slow (like 2.7 or so) spell power weapon, so we get the higher weapon dmg, cause we still don't care about the actual DPS of the weapon.
btw, huge hammer is huge
*edit
and looking at this

we see that spell power weapons' dps will change with item level, unlike previously.

60 DPS compared to 140-150 DPS of other 1 hands is pretty much same of current 41 DPS vs 100 DPS

Please be aware in some countries, the , is used as a delimiter of the THOUSAND place and not for decimals. The "." is used for decimal places after the whole numbers. For Americans, it appeared as though you multiplied by 1 thousand and 8 hundred-seventy-nine
