The easiest way to practice tanking is to practice tanking.

This shit isn't rocket surgery.

Well many thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to stay away from the AV and go with a mix of the better ideas.

I'll probably start with an hour of soloing really really easy instances (SM/BRD), just to get spell-cycles down and get used to where I placed my spells, as I haven't been prot specc'd for a couple months, and never spec'd into Capt'n America. Then I'll get a couple friends to come help me out in a regular 5-mans, before going into full PUGs. I'll probably do Shat halls or Shadow Labs. But I'll stay away from the lvl60-66 instances to avoid such mana issues.

Now I'm just waiting to see if there is indeed a tanking slot in my guild ;P. My holy gear has proven itself through Shade and Illhoof so I'm going to pursue the Prot gear either way, and I figure within 2 weeks I could have all of it. But I'm the GM and do enjoy healing so I'm just preparing for what's needed.

I've been tempting myself to tank for several months now, always reading up on it :) Hopefully my time is about to come!

Tanking 5-mans is easy finding a raid slot is not so much if the tanking role is already filled; course you being the GM makes that easier but still, you only ever really need one MT.

This is kind of like those fathers who teach their boys to swim by throwing them in a raging river, right?

Sounds good to me!

yeah i dont think this forum is condining flaming anything, atleast i know i wouldnt. We all start some where.

As far as first lvl 70 5 man i tanked was Slabs as well, wiped on the first boss's fear 4 times ( pally was a good friend we started @ lvl 1-70 together same time dinging every level ) He couldnt keep up with heals and didnt know how to react on fears. Saving grace a dps left and brought in an enhance shaman for tremor totems, now of course we can easily run without them but its great to learn what your weaknesses are.

Also 2nd boss SL will teach you again how small your mana pool is and how long mana potion cooldowns are. Just keep up wisdom / save thes manataps AI uses on your priest they will benefit you after MC for mana to taunt at desperate times.

3rd boss teaches you kiting techniques and is in general an easy kill with good healer and DPS

Murmur ( last boss ) starts @ 40% health ( praise the lord i solo dps'ed last 3% and fight lasts another 5+ mins) this boss in general is just a timing quiz for me, also the first boss i self heal on. ( murmur sonic booms taking about 80% current health soon as boom is @ 75% i cast holy light on myself and have healer give me biggest heal they have at same time, boom life gone and immediately near full again, beats the hell outta running out and in, i judge wisdom and r1 consecrate and r1 holyshield as aggro is never a problem here.

also remember you have a bubble so when he sonics bubble soon as it goes off cancel it to regain tanking before the casters/healers get silenced.

Sorry about this incoherant post but meh i am rushing between customers at work trying to be useful hope it helps ^^

This Weekends Result:

First off thank you all for your input. I'm fortunate to have such a good community to share their experience and advice. I'm also more fortunate than most of you. My GM's are just as excited as I am to have a Tankadin so I have the full support of most of my network of friends. (well technically I'm the GM, but it's basically the 3 of us, I just happen to be around more and better at organizing while they are better at game mechanics and building/running a raid.)

Ok this post could go really long so let me just get back to topic. I needed Mechanar for Rep for Crest of Sha'tar. Until this weekend I'd only been doing Heroic runs for the badges + the rep. So anyways, ran once as Holy and then things switched around. Got a healer from the guild to go and went 4/5 Guild run with me my first time prot. It was my first time in a while and we took things slow like we should have. I had a great (mace spec) rogue guildie with me that actually locked those big mechanical guys up too much so I didnt get much block threat on them :P But before the second run I'd explained it to him and he was awesome at letting me get hit a for a second then locking it back up.

Anyways. I got about 6k rep that night and bought my shield Sunday morning :D I respec'd Holy for Sundays raid, but... here's the good part. Our MT has a priest that just got keyed :D So it looks like tomorrow is going to my first shot at Kara. The instance will be fresh and my gear is ready. I'm uncrit uncrushable with 11.3k HP (self-buffed) CB+40 + spell damage food + I'll get some adept's elixir or whatever they're called made b4 the raid. (Why can't those damn things stack to 20??)

I'm Sooo excited. And most of my friends are to which makes it soo much better. I tanked some 5 man kills for a good elemental shaman friend of mine and he was Thrilled and Shocked at my threat output :D

So thanks for the help, and thanks for the support, and I hope my story (while self-centered) was inspiring and exciting a bit some of you too!

WOOT! Tankadin For The Win!
