+Def stats not adding up?

Hi, first a big hello from me as a noob to the forum. The site was highly recommended and i've been browsing since yesterday and have to say im well impressed with the advice on here. far better than anywhere else i've looked. Anyway, enough brown-nosing

My prob is +def stats on equipment. Its frustrating me to find i get say a +20 def item, equip it and find i have just a meagre +6 def increase.
specifically
Felsteel helm, got standard +33 def & a +16 def enchant yet when i equip it, i get a measly +20 increase in defence.
Felsteel gloves, +25 def yet stacks only +10 in stats.
all other equipment i have with +def does exactly the same all in i have +185 defence on my items yet when all equipped i have but a mere +70 more in the stats

Is there a formula for this that i should check or is the +stat not working as it should.

2.34 Defense Rating = 1 Defense Skill @ Lvl 70.
