Getting Beat hard in Ramps

Postby Donkey » Mon Mar 10, 2008 8:39 pm

So, I finally tried tanking my first heroic. I was thinking I might be a little under dressed, but I thought I would give it a shot to see where I stand.

First pull was a single. We survived but my health was spiking up and down.
Second pull was a double. We survived again but seemed like I was one hit away from death a few times during the short fight.

After that we stopped and talked and decided it wouldn't make it past the first boss. I agreed.

From reading other posts on here, it doesn't seem like I am too far off from tanking a heroic. But I am obviously missing something. I am also stuck for gear. If anyone can point to any gear I can get to help, it would be great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know I need some enchants and to reevaluate my gems.

Your dodge may be a little low, but if you make sure to get a good/overgeared healer you should be fine if you stack your group correctly. I'd say for the first few heroics you do, make sure to bring 2 CC options, and a warlock and/or priest for HP buffs. Just take them slowly and CC as much as possible until you get a better idea of what you can handle. You will wipe a few times, but you should make it through.

You need to replace those green of the champion pieces immediately. Strength is a wasted item point. I would suggest getting the Keepers of Time greaves as well as the head enchant from them. Replace some of the defense gems with either +dodge/parry or +stam. BP of the righteous is a good choice for chest, and flesh beast boots from the escort quest in mana tombs for feet. Generally, refer to the gear guide in the gear section. I would not try to tank heroics in greens.

The first couple pulls in Heroic Ramparts are actually pretty tough on a tank. I'm pretty sure one of the first 3 mobs stuns, and that means no more blocking/dodging til the stun runs out. Also the dual-wielding guys just do a lot of damage. If you are noticing a lot of spikes, try wearing a pvp trinket and using it any time you get hit with a long stun. IMO putting block and dodge back on your combat table can be more important than anything else when you're fighting to stay alive. You should also work on using Hammer of Justice to buy your healer some time. Don't use it when you're at full health, watch your health and stun when you start dipping a bit.

Enchants... You're missing KoT:revered head enchant, Scryer/Aldor shoulder enchant, 150 health on bp, 12 sta or def on bracers, and Clefthide leg armor. If you're not willing to spend the money on those, at least slap +10 sta kits on head/shoulders/bp/legs. The extra hps will make it easier to stay alive.

Where to start....... at the beginning I guess.

Ok mate, I'll try to give as much advice as I can, please note what I say is not meant to demotivate or make you angry, nor does it reflect what the community as a whole feels, these are simply my views.

You simply aren't geared for heroics, 11.4k health with kings and motw already on you isn't anywhere near enough. I always aim for 14k health and 14k armour, other people will tell you this is too high, but from my experiances this is what you want for a hasslefree heroic [if your group composition is ok] if your defensive stats are also on par.

You obviously know about rep grinding from your pre TBC stats, but don't appear to have done much post TBC, it could be you have been unlucky with drops, it could be you didn't do many instances but it definately is the case that your gear isn't up to it unless you really over gear the heroic with the rest of the party.

However, all is definately not lost. You did the best thing by dipping your toe in the water, hell I got smashed shitless in my first heroic slave pens with 13k armour and 12.5k health [I still blame the tree druid who refused to come out of tree form tbh] although I admit my gear wasn't great. This motivated me to get the best gear I could. Check out the sticky gear threads, pick the pieces you want and then put in the hard work to get them, I would suggest you consider the following as urgent upgrades,

1/ CE Revered Rep neckpiece
2/ Aldor Rep Chest
3/ KoT Rep Timewardens Leggings
4/ FotC Trinket from SH
5/ Get Exalted with Aldor and Revered with KoT for the shoulder and head enchants.
6/ If you run SV, hope for the devilshark cloak to drop off the last boss.

I wouldn't worry too much about enchants on greens either, if your desperate for + stam, get the leatherworking kits that add +10 stam to head, feet, legs or hands, far cheaper for you short term. It is however, when you do get some nicer gear, your responsibility to continually upgrade it and get the best enchants/patches on it you can afford. By not skimping now it will make a huge difference for you.

Hope that helps and pointed you in the right direction. Tankadins more than any other class are gear dependant and the gear is a sod to get most of the time. The sticky guides to equipment in the gear forum will become your best friend, read them and read them again :)

Good luck!

For your next heroic attempt, do not I say again do not do Ramparts. It's definitely not the easiest to tank. There are stunners and mortal strikers all over the place.

For your first heroic I'd suggest Slave Pens or Blood Furnace. Neither one has anything that can really wreck an undergeared tank, except maybe the Felguard Annihilators at the end of BF - and if you're desperate you can get around those with a DI suicide run into the boss room. :)

I haven't start heroic yet, even though im sure im geared for it now, I tanked trash in kara last night =-).

But my question to "Arcand" or anyone else that might know, is that he stated for the OP to start out in "Blood Furnace" as one of the beginner choices, I rembember back in the day on the second boss "Broggok" that the waves of Orcs that come from the gates keep me stunned alot. Do they do this on heroic also? If so is this still one you would suggest for someone starting heroics?

just asking.

I wouldn't say BF heroic.

Slave Pens, Steamvaults, Mech, Underbog ... All easy heroics to start out in.

Mech and bring a rogue/DPS warrior to stop the fist thing, IMO. Nothing fears in there like it does in H SP.

Just run circles around those little bomber guys while consecrating, it's really fun to watch the bombs miss.

Use CC when starting out. I know it kind of goes against our creedo, but it will be necessary for you until you replace some of your gear.

Remove steamvaults because the 1st boss can just randomly be a cow with her clouds.

Slave Pens, Underbog [watch for the Bog Lords] and Mechanar[take a Warlock] are the easiest from my experiances when you are just starting out on heroics.

Yeah I know her clouds dont change much mate, but she is so random with them that its easy to wipe with non experianced players because sometimes you can't even see the things dependant on where your camera angle is. I personally have no problem with them, but find melee dps always seems to struggle vs the clouds. For that reason alone I wouldn't advise doing SV as an 'easy' heroic, when the other 3 are much less random.

Just my take on it :) Cheers for the coffee and cookies though :)

Well, I tried tanking Heroic Mech yesterday with this gear:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-shee ... =Pallydigo
and even though we were fine on the big guys and all the others, I had my life drained very quickly on the first bombers (didn't know about the running in circles thingy :D)and we had a wipe. After seeing how fast they kicked my life down, I then decided to tell the party I maybe wasn't preppared to tank that instance, so we decided to stop.

I'd like to know, since I need rep with the Sha'tar (yes, for the crest  ) if I can tank mech with this gear (now I'm gonna try to use the running in circles tactic :D).

Thanks in advance to whomever might help me in this question, and thanks to all those who made this forum possible, since it's now my number 1 source of information on tanking :D

You are good to go digaum2003, you might want the +40 spelldamage on your sword at some point soon, but the rest of your gear is fine for heroic mech. just take a Warlock if you want to kill the little demons, I generally just skip them now to be honest.
