A Call To Arms - WoD Mechanics Testing

Postby theckhd » Tue Jun 10, 2014 6:20 pm

Accurate modeling is predicated on having solid data. Just as we did in Cataclysm, we'll need to test various aspects of our mechanics in order to ensure the models give us the best possible predictions.

The goal of this thread will be to ask and answer questions about game mechanics through empirical testing, in a very similar vein to the incredibly useful EJ threads of expansions past. I'll keep a running list of the current parse requests, issues, and links to the data relevant to those issues.

When posting data, please include as much information as is relevant to the problem at hand. Most requests will ask for the specific information needed, but more never hurts. As a rule of thumb, try to include the following information:

  • Game build # (i.e. 6.0.1.18322)
  • AP or SP
  • Weapon information - a link, or give me the name, tooltip damage, and speed.
  • Glyphs
  • character level - and any applicable Draenor perks you have if not yet 100
  • raid dummy level
  • Versatility Rating
  • Stamina - if protection, for Resolve

Many of these tests need to be done in very controlled environments to make sure that the analysis is accurate. It's generally good practice to find an isolated dummy and make sure they don't gain any external debuffs during testing (unless we specifically request a particular debuff, of course).

If you have questions about World of Logs or WCL, please take a look at the "WoL/WCL How-To" section below. If all else fails, uploading a raw combat log with your post is acceptable as well.

Parse Requests

NOTE: If a test requests a combat log, please make sure Advanced Combat Logging is enabled.

Test #11: Shining Protector Proc Madness
On hold until we get a new build (18379 tested)
  • Level: 90+
  • Gear: Any, but use the Frostfire Ridge shamanstone buff that gives you 100% multistrike procs
  • Seal: Truth/Insight
  • Spec: Prot
  • Attack Sequence: With SoT active, cast Flash of Light on yourself as many times as possible while the multistrike proc is active. Repeat with SoI active.
  • Report: Upload log.

Test #14: T17 Prot bonuses
  • Gear: T17 4-piece
  • Spec: Prot
  • Attack Sequence: Have a caster friend duel you. Let them melee you until your T17 4-piece activates. When it does, cast Avenger's Shield to activate your 2-piece bonus and have them continue meleeing through the effect.
Repeat this process a second time, but have them immediately spam instant cast spells on you during the proc effect instead.
  • Report: Upload log. Report character sheet block chance with and without the 2-piece effect.

Test Log: Current and Resolved Issues:

  1. [6.0.2.18816] Verifying Ability Mechanics SotR, Cons, AS, HW, J, Censure, SoT, Melee, CS HotR, SoI, FoL, SoR, EF, LH, HPr all working properly. Execution Sentence tooltip lies.
  2. [6.0.1.18505] Empowered Seals - SoR gives 30% attack speed; Uther's Insight benefits from SoI, cannot crit, can MS, Affected by Resolve, Versatility^2 (probably bug); Maraad's 15% AP is multiplicative w/ mastery, raid buff;
  3. [6.0.2.18764] Seal of Insight - Affects SoI, FoL, EF, LH, HPr. Does not affect SS. Consistent with spell data change (5% bonus to all healing, rather than spell-specific).
  4. [6.0.1.18716] Seal of Truth/Censure - Tooltips accurate, SoT uses un-normalized weapon damage, both can crit.
  5. [6.0.1.18505] Sword of Light - Affects FoL/EF/WoG as advertised, does not affect Harsh Words
  6. [6.0.2.18833] Sacred Shield - Prot: (0+1.3059954410*SP), Ret: (1+1.3059954410/0.7*SP), Holy: (0+0.9946876987*SP);, versatility/resolve multiplicative.
  7. [6.x.x.xxxxx] Seraphim + Divine Purpose - Seraphim can't consume Divine Purpose.
  8. [6.0.1.18505] Seraphim - 30% rating multiplier, multiplicative with attunements
  9. [6.0.1.18505] Attack Power Mutlipliers - All Multiplicative, total_ap = AP_from_str * (1 + mastery%) * (1 + maraad_buff%) * (1 + raid_buff_%)
  10. [6.0.1.18379] Shining Protector - Doesn't double dip on anything
  11. [6.x.x.xxxxx] Shining Protector Proc Madness
  12. [6.0.1.18471] Holy Shield Absorb Order - Last in OoO, effectiveness reduced by other absorbs
  13. [6.0.2.18833] Sacred Shield Multistrike Interaction - SS makes 3 independent rolls (crit, ms1, ms2) using character sheet values).
  14. [6.x.x.xxxxx] T17 Prot bonuses
  15. [6.0.2.18833] Seal of Insight Proc Rate - 20PPM

Compiled Results on specific topics
Many of the details of spells can be extracted from game files (ala SimC). This area is for me to keep detailed notes on each ability. As things change I'll try to keep it updated based on that data, sort of like a quick-reference for all of our mechanics.

Note that as of right now I haven't updated any of the numbers, so they're probably all wrong.

WoL/WCL How-To

I've started guilds on both Warcraft Logs and World of Logs for uploading beta test logs. I prefer Warcraft Logs for a number of reasons, one of which is because you can be a member of multiple guilds, so you can just use your existing WCL account (if you don't already have one, you should!). Anyone who's running dungeons or doing testing on beta is encouraged to record their combat log and upload.

Creating a Warcraft Logs account is very simple. Just go to http://www.warcraftlogs.com/ and click on the "Sign Up" button. Once you've logged in, you can click on the link below to automatically join the guild (Beta Testing Logs on Tichondrius, your actual region and server are irrelevant):

http://www.warcraftlogs.com/guilds/autojoin/10951/fajxh632

Once you've done that, just download the WCL client and you're set to go; you'll automatically have upload access.

Logging is easy:
WWS wrote:Start World of Warcraft and enter the game. At the beginning of the raid, dungeon or solo testing session you want to create a report for, type /combatlog into the chat box, you should get a response saying "Combat being logged to Logs/WoWCombatlog.txt". When you're done with the raid, dungeon or solo testing session type /combatlog again. You'll get another response saying "Combat logging disabled". Log out of WoW and your combat log should be in the /World of Warcraft/Logs/ folder.

To upload, just run the client and browse to the /World of Warcraft/Logs/ folder and choose the WoWCombatlog.txt file. The client will do the rest.

Alternatively, you can upload-as-you-go by running the client before you record and clicking "Start a Live Logging Session." This will watch the combat log as you play and upload to the server in small chunks whenever there's a break in the action.

If you insist on using World of Logs, the instructions in last expansion's WoL How-To should still work.

Request History

Test #1: Verifying ability mechanics (damage/healing, multistrike, proc triggers, etc.)
This is a catch-all that should let me verify multiple things at once. Once we have a few logs to analyze, I'll add extra requests focused on whatever questions this doesn't answer.
  • Level: 100
  • Gear: multiple combinations, no dynamic procs that affect damage (i.e. no weapon enchant, no trinkets w/ Str/AP procs). High MS will help
  • Target: level 103 dummy, no external debuffs
  • Attack Sequence: Normal rotation, hit it (or yourself, for heals) with everything you have (CS, HotR, J, AS, HW, Cons, L90 talents, SotR, WoG, EF, SS, FoL, etc.).
  • Seal: all (swap between to get ~100 procs of each)
  • Goal: Around 100 casts of each ability
  • Report: upload log, note total AP and char sheet weapon damage, specify talents/glyphs used

Test #2: Empowered Seals
  • Level: 100
  • Gear: any, again no dynamic procs
  • Target: any
  • Attack Sequence: J, cast next seal, repeat (cycle between all seals)
  • Goal: Around 5 minutes of seal twisting
  • Report: upload log, note char sheet AP, haste, weapon damage (without any of the Emp Seal buffs active)

Test #3: Seal of Insight
  • Level: any
  • Gear: any, again no dynamic procs
  • Target: any
  • Attack Sequence: auto-attack, cast heals on self
  • Goal: cast every heal in our arsenal on ourselves about 100 times. This includes talents (LH, HPr, ES, EF, FoL), potions, healthstones (if available), and any set bonuses you have available.
  • Report: upload log, note char sheet AP, haste, and any set bonuses or other effects I should look for in the log.

Test #4: Seal of Truth
  • Level: any
  • Gear: any, no dynamic procs
  • Weapon: Tomahawk, Brunnhildar Axe
  • Target: any
  • Attack Sequence: auto-attack with SoT active
  • Goal: about 500 Seal of Truth (not Censure) procs with each weapon, preferably in separate logs
  • Report: upload logs, note char sheet AP (shouldn't change between weapons)

Test #5: Sword of Light (Ret)
  • Level: any
  • Gear: any, no dynamic procs
  • Spec: Ret
  • Target: yourself
  • Attack Sequence: Cast 100 each of Eternal Flame and Flash of Light on yourself. Then switch to Harsh Words and cast 20-30 of those on a dummy. Use any/all HP generators as needed, obviously, 1-HP EF is fine for this.
  • Report: upload log, note char sheet AP

Test #6: Sacred Shield
  • Level: any
  • Gear: any, no dynamic procs, use a 1h+shield
  • Spec: All 3
  • Target: yourself
  • Attack Sequence: Cast Sacred Shield on yourself once in each spec, noting the size of the absorb bubble granted. For bonus points, duel a friend and have them attack you while you do this (so the shields are consumed in the combat log)
  • Report: upload log, note absorb bubble size in each spec and AP value in each spec.

Test #7: Seraphim & Divine Purpose
  • Level: 100
  • Gear: 4T16 Ret
  • Spec: Ret
  • Talents: Divine Purpose, Seraphim
  • Attack Sequence: Build HP, using Seraphim on cooldown. No other finishers. Continue for 100 Seraphim casts or until you see one each of Divine Purpose and 4T16 ("Divine Crusader") procs from Seraphim.
  • Report: upload log

Test #8: Seraphim
  • Level: 100
  • Gear: any
  • Spec: Any
  • Talents: Seraphim
  • Attack Sequence: build HP and cast Seraphim.
  • Report: Haste, Crit, Mastery, Multistrike, Versatility, Bonus Armor with and without Seraphim buff active.

Test #9: Attack Power Multipliers
  • Level: 100
  • Gear: any
  • Seal: Truth
  • Spec: none/Prot
  • Talents: Empowered Seals
  • Attack Sequence: None. While not specced, record character sheet AP. Then spec prot and note character sheet AP and mastery%. Then cast Judgment on a dummy to get the Maraad's Truth buff, and record character sheet AP.
  • Report: All of the values mentioned above

Test #10: Shining Protector Ratio
  • Level: 90+
  • Gear: Any, with some multistrike
  • Seal: Truth/Insight
  • Spec: Prot
  • Attack Sequence: With SoT active, cast Flash of Light on yourself until you get a Shining Protector proc. Repeat with SoI active.
  • Report: Resolve, Amounts of FoL and Shining Protector in each scenario.

Test #12: Holy Shield Absorb Order
  • Level: 100
  • Gear: Any, preferably high mastery (block chance)
  • Seal: Any
  • Talents: Sacred Shield, Holy Shield
  • Attack Sequence: Find a warlock friend to duel. Keep Sacred Shield up, and have them keep Agony & Corruption on you. Record a few minutes of combat this way. Repeat with and without Holy Shield talent active.
  • Report: Upload log.

Test #13: Sacred Shield Multistrike Interaction
  • Level: 90+
  • Gear: Any, but with a fair (and constant) amount of multistrike, something in the 20-40% range would be good.
  • Seal: None
  • Spec: Prot
  • Attack Sequence: Refresh Sacred Shield over and over and over and over... Goal is about 300-500 ticks, so 30-50 minutes worth.
  • Report: Upload log. Report character sheet multistrike and crit %.

Test #15: Seal of Insight proc rate
  • Gear: any, but no dynamic haste effects
  • Spec: Prot
  • Attack sequence: turn on Seal of Insight, and auto-attack a dummy for about an hour.
  • Report: Upload log, Report weapon speed (both on the weapon and on the char sheet).

Test #10 Shining Protector Double-Dipping
Build 18379
1453 AP & SP
Level 92
1670 Stamina
Resolve 5% (0 damage taken)

This is with the 100% Multistrike proc buff applied by the Garrison Shamanstone; every FoL cast will trigger both Multistrike chances as MS is over 100%.

Seal of Truth:

22:39:52> Your Shining Protector healed You 0 Holy. (900 Overhealed)
22:39:52> Your Flash of Light healed You 0 Holy. (3002 Overhealed)
22:39:52> Your Flash of Light healed You 0 Holy. (866 Overhealed) (Multistrike)
22:39:52> Your Flash of Light healed You 0 Holy. (845 Overhealed) (Multistrike)

Seal of Insight:

22:39:56> Your Shining Protector healed You 0 Holy. (942 Overhealed)
22:39:56> Your Shining Protector healed You 0 Holy. (942 Overhealed)

So, some curious results here.

First, Shining Protector doesn't double-dip on anything, as expected.

900/3002 = 0.2998
942/3140 = 0.3000
291/970 = 0.3000

So it doesn't benefit from Seal of Insight or from Resolve, because the base heal that triggers it is affected by both. Would be pretty broken if it didn't work this way (otherwise Resolve would indirectly increase all external healing on you via Shining Protector).

Second: There appears to be a bug with Shining Protector, in that it's proccing twice in some circumstances. Given what you've shown me Kerri, my guess is that it's related to having Seal of Insight active? In other words, it seems to perform properly with SoT up, but always procs twice when Seal of Insight is active. Is that repeatable? In other words, does it always give you that double proc effect with SoI up, and never with SoT?

Third: It can proc off of multistrikes. The proc that heals for 291 clearly procced from the 970 Multistrike. What's curious is that we didn't get a proc from the 961 Multistrike. Unless there's a 288 Shining Protector double-proc just below that in the combat log that Kerri is hiding from us (doubtful). I don't know why it would only proc from one of the two multi-strikes but not the other, unless it's still using the old (X/2)% MS system (i.e. X% MS means you get two X/2% rolls).

Kerri, can you run a few more tests to clarify those last two points? Probably spam FoL on yourself for the full 12-sec duration of the buff so we have a few more events to peruse. This time I'll actually want the log, since there's more data to sift through - I didn't ask for one the first time because I expected this to be a pretty straightforward test.

Doesn't look like WCL denotes Multistrike yet (at least, not in the Events View) but it should be pretty easy to figure out. Did two quick rounds of testing with each seal by hitting the level 1 dummy in the Garrison. If you need any more, please let me know.

It looks like it's not tied to Seal of Insight. From the Seal of Truth log:
Code: Select all
19:05:54.960   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 1687)
19:05:54.960   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +*0* (O: 5622)
19:05:54.960   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 1671)
19:05:54.960   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 525)
19:05:54.960   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 525)
19:05:54.960   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 1748)

1671/5622 = 0.300
525/1748 = 0.300

That's a clear double-proc of Shining Protector off of the 1748 multistrike. It's also clear it didn't proc at all off of the first multi-strike, despite you having 100% Multistrike with the buff up. Nor is it consistent:

Code: Select all
19:05:56.299   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 1775)
19:05:56.299   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +*0* (O: 5917)
19:05:56.299   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 1874)
19:05:56.299   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 545)
19:05:56.299   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 1817)

This time, it only procced once off of the 1817 multistrike. And in this instance it didn't proc off of the primary heal at all, just the first multistrike (30% of 1751):

Code: Select all
19:05:57.639   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 2883)
19:05:57.639   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 525)
19:05:57.639   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +*0* (O: 1751)
19:05:57.639   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 1672)

And here's one where we got double-procs off of the main heal and one multistrike, and a single-proc off of the other multistrike:

Code: Select all
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 814)
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 814)
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 2713)
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 251)
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 838)
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 529)
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 529)
19:06:00.858   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +*0* (O: 1763)

And that's all in the SoT log. I can find similar cases in the SoI logt:

Code: Select all
19:13:36.409   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 899)
19:13:36.409   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 2995)
19:13:36.409   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 267)
19:13:36.409   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 891)
19:13:36.409   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 260)
19:13:36.409   Kerriodos Shining Protector Kerriodos +0 (O: 260)
19:13:36.409   Kerriodos Flash of Light Kerriodos +0 (O: 866)

Current theory: The proccing of Shining Protector is borked, and it's using the old multi-strike chance code, such that 100% multistrike is giving two 50% chance rolls. That means a 25% chance of a double-proc, 25% chance of no proc, and 50% chance of one proc from any individual event. There's not enough data here to conclusively test those ratios, but I don't think there's much point in trying to collect it. The double-procs make it clear that this is a bug, and that we should just report it as such and let them sort it out.

Confirmation that it's bugged, and being fixed:

We'll wait for two builds and re-test this briefly to be sure, but now we know how it's "supposed" to work.
