Resistence in MoP

Postby superworm » Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:18 am

I heard that resistence as a status has been removed in MoP. However, the prismatic elixir still has a description of +90 resistence. Is it still effective? How much DR does it provide if the answer is yes?

Resistance is still in game as mechanic (some vanilla / tbc mobs can resist your spells due to innate resistance). It's my understanding that stuff that adds resistance still works. However, 90 resistance at lvl 90 is more or less nothing.

Could be. It's just kind of strange that I can no longer find resistence on the character panel and the corresponding DR now.

There was a thread at EJ about DR of resistance. It might give you some clues as how to extrapolate for level 90 (since it only covers up to 85). There were a couple of threads here discussing it as well that might have a link or two. See if the site search brings up any hits here.

Easy way to test:
1) Find a warlock friend. Warock enemy would work too.
2) Put on Mirror of Broken Images
3) Duel
3) Have them cast Corruption on you
4) About halfway through the DoT duration, click MoBI's on-use.
5) Upload combat log for scrutiny

I've been using Prismatic Elixirs and the Mirror of Broken Images on a few fights with some high magical damage (Garajal and Elegon). It definitely seems to work based on the resists that I'm seeing on World of Logs. The elixirs seem to be something to the tune of ~20% damage reduction when it actually resists. It's kind of complicated by the fact that I dont have consistent usage of the Prismatic Elixirs through our attempts. I would die to a Voodoo Doll one attempt and switch to Prismatic Elixirs and then die to melee and swap back to an Mantid Elixir. It's also further complicated by the fact the attacks are blocked as well as resisted.

I'm pretty sure this attempt is with prismatic elixirs on with some usage of the Mirror of Broken Images.

That one was both blocked and then resisted with a Prismatic Elixirs and the Mirror of Broken Images. Pretty sizable bit of damage reduction IMO.

Seeing the same results in a controlled environment. Mage casting Blizzard on me.
1712 damage without any resistance effects
1027, 1198, 1370 damage with Sindragosa's Flawless Fang (268 resist).
1199 and 1027 damage with MoBI (400 resist)
685 and 849 damage with both (668 resist)

So at 268 resist, we see events at 60%, 70%, and 80% damage (40%, 30%, and 20% resistance), suggesting the average resistance is very close to 30%.
At 400 resist, we see events at 60% and 70% (40% and 30% resistance), suggesting the average resistance is between 30% and 40%.
At 668 resist, we're getting events at 40% and 50% (60% and 50% resistance), suggesting the average resistance is between 50% and 60%.

The old resistance formula would suggest a new resistance constant of 825 for a level 90 attacker (the mage). This gives us ~25% average resist at 268, ~33% average resist at 400, and ~46% at 668. These are a little lower than our observed values, suggesting the formula has changed slightly. The level 93 constant (506) is too low, though. Fooling around with some numbers in MATLAB, something around 588 (level 85 constant) seems to get us pretty close.

The EJ post I linked mentions that there is a new API function that you can use to get the exact resistance constants, but I haven't been able to find that API function. If we can figure out what it is, we can determine this value more accurately.

The bottom line is that resistance effects are still very strong in MoP, making MoBI an attractive trinket for certain fights.

30%~40% DR from MoBI sounds quite intriguing for Elegon encounter. In normal mode the healing pressure is not high enough to make it really matter, but it could be useful when we try the heroic mode.

Tried that already, that just returns your resistance "rating" (i.e. 400 for MoBI).

Got a small amount of shadow damage data from when I remembered to use the Mirror on Tsulong. Guild logs going private soon. Don't know if it effects old logs. Was also running the Effulgent (-2% spell damage) meta.

Dread Shadow resists ranging from ~5 to 25%
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-9 ... sted+%3E+0

Shadow Breaths ranging from ~35 to 60%
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-9 ... sted+%3E+0

Those breaths like to get resisted more (higher) I guess.

Bizarre guess: I wonder if there's some weird interaction between resisting initial Dread damage and then having it multiplied by stacks. Kind of like Anubarak adds. You'd block most of the attack, but the left over got multiplied. Doesn't explain an average of 45% on the Breaths though.

Some Spray resists from Lei Shi:

Ranged from 5 to 30%. Average across all events was ~17%
