SOV 3.2 and weapon swing

Postby Aranbenjo » Wed Jul 29, 2009 2:24 am

Since for 3.2 SOV changes report
"... In addition, the damage-over-time effect is now considered a melee attack instead of a spell attack and the effects from these seals can only be triggered by auto-attacks and Hammer of the Righteous. "
Is it any worth looking for a "Fast Weapon"?

On the contrary, I think. Yes, you can build the stack faster with a quick weapon, but the 33% weapon-swing-damage proc from HotR will be higher from a slow weapon.

I wouldn't be surprized to see a slower swinging tank weapon in 3.2. We have yet to see one tank weapon at all from the PTR though and with only 1 - 2 weeks left im sure we will start seeing more drops.

I'm starting to get worried about tank weapon drops. For the most part we know the full loot tables, even on heroic mode since they're purely an ilvl upgrade with a different name. Either the weapons going to be part of the final chest reward for completing the zone under X attempts or we might be getting the Bear 3.1 treatment and won't be seeing a tank centric 1H upgrade this go-around.

I'm not too worried about it. The defense values on armor are high enough that its not that big a loss to use a DPS weapon.

Yeah, we certainly will be way over 540. However even the ilvl 258 version of the DPS 1H are a significant stamina downgrade from Shiver/Sorthalis and completely lack any STR. I'm holding out hope that that the Cache of the Crusade or whatever it's called has a decent 1H in it on 10 & 25.

Will Broken Promise be the best threat weapon then, considering its relatively slow swing speed?

Haven't seen any Broken Promise-calculations for 3.2 yet. Will hopefully appear in Theck's MATLAB - Soon™

The code for it is all written from back when I was looking at SoB tanking. I just have to update it a bit to match the new structure of the modules. It's on my to-do list.

Almost certainly not, given the iLevel disparity between BP and other tanking weapons now available. Swing speed is generally only a relevant consideration between weapons of roughly the save average dps.

It actually matters more than you (or I) would think. I did some calculations from when 3.2 first went on the PTR. They're slightly outdated, but the numbers won't have changed all the drastically.

DPS from a very early PTR build:
Code: Select all
Utility   Spec       Titanguard   Broken Promise
          5S3V3R     3.2630       3.2592
D         5S3V       3.2123       3.186
          5V3C33R    3.2692       3.2615
D         5V3C3      3.2181       3.1878
P         5S1V3R     3.2229       3.2192
DP        5S1V       3.1731       3.1473
P         3V3C3R     3.2292       3.2218
DP        3V3C       3.1791       3.1493
PV        4S3R       3.1777       3.1734
DPV       4S         3.1288       3.1027
PV        1V3C3R     3.1893       3.182
DPV       1V3C       3.1400       3.1108

people remember the "weapon speed doesn't really matter" from other classes with normalised attacks.

For us, with un-normalised attacks weapon speed is HUGE. Considering that weapon DPS only affects white damage and HotR damage, while weapon speed affects seal procs off HotR, the two effects are pretty similar.

Doubling the weapon speed doubles your damage of a seal proc from HotR. Its a great stat for us! Shame you can't gem it...

That, and come 3.2, reckoning might actually become a significant threat upgrade with a slow weapon like broken promise.

Assuming you have sufficient defense rating, then a 3.2 era DPS 1H like Hellscream Slicer may be superior to Broken Promise.
