Base block chance compared to active block chance

Postby Nehor » Thu Apr 23, 2009 6:52 pm

I was thinking today about the advantage paladins have with Holy Shield getting that 30% boost to block. Would it be wise to lean toward gear that gives more dodge and parry because we have Holy Shield? Here is my gear right now so you guys can use me as an example.

Yes....even if...

because we have Holy Shield

were not a consideration..

Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE advocate of being block capped with high block value. The problem is in every case dodge and parry are better better than block.

If I could have 60% combined avoidance in my block set, that would be awesome, but I just can't make the gear do that.

Avoidance is not better in every case.

I wouldn't say parry is better than block for our class. Dodge sure, defence sure. Even agility! Parry sucks. :P If I had to choose between BV and Parry at equal item levels id go BV every time even if I was under blockcap.

That's stupid...

Avoiding an attack completely is better than reducing the damage by X.

If you're talking itemisation, that's a different matter as parry rating itself sucks... but if you're talking in end %s, it doesn't matter if its parry, dodge or miss.. I mean essentially the best set for a typical melee oriented boss would be to balance dodge and defense so that you had just enough defense to make unhittable with the rest as dodge.

It's not stupid to look to mitigation items over poor avoidance items. Parry is the worst avoidance stat for a paladin, BV on the other hand is excellent for improving the worse case scenario. You rarely pick between a BV and EH piece, usually the choice is between BV and avoidance. Now don't get me wrong, avoidance is great for reducing the chances of a worse case scenario but it's hard not to see the value of 100% reliable mitigation, making a BV item's worse case scenario that much better than the avoidance piece's.

Well then, which Helm would you use?

The situation: I have about 1% more avoidance from the Ironbark over the Valorous Faceguard, putting me around 101% and 100% respectively.

My gearset if you're interested.

Dodge > BV ~= Parry, IMO. Ironbark is so vastly superior to tier in so many ways that the particular example you gave isn't very fair.

Although I admit that part of it is me having a personal crusade against the T7 helmet. Never once rolled on it.

Calm down. We are Paladins, not DK or druids.
