Neat DPS Trick

Postby Eanin » Sun Mar 01, 2009 2:52 pm

Last night on Thaddius (I wasn't MTing), I decided to try something new. Usually, I find it hard to keep up Seal of Vengeance and not run out of mana, so I decided to equip this after I was done with my add:

Shield of Assimilation

And bam, no mana problems. Between the extra mana from Divine Plea and Replenishment plus the mp5 on the shield, I basically was able to DPS without any serious mana difficulties.

It's an idea I picked up from the ret paladin forums. I also use this shield when soloing, since it gives me extra mana from the above sources plus seal of wisdom.

So what you're saying is that http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40109 or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44332 would have done the trick?

Together, yes. Don't forget you probably have the +25 intellect enchant on your healing shield, so it would pretty much be as good as both of those together (it's 68 intellect and 15 mp5). It also means that you don't have to swap consumables midfight - shields can be swapped over costing only a GCD.

I know that a lot of ret pallies include a couple pieces of mail for similar reasons.

I carry around my healing shield and weapon all the time, anyway, for times where I can help out by tossing out a few heals (Maly phase 2, for instance), so it doesn't even cost bag space to do this.

They mostly use mail pieces because they have less of an ilvl tax due to diverse stats.

The shield is worth 50.75 mp5 in total with kings, DP every CD and constant replenishment.

That's not bad really. If I'm not mistaken, it would also increase our mana returns from judgement of wisdom.

Overall, I find I "bleed" mana slowly when dpsing in a long fight. This removes a significant chunk of that bleed (which is current mana/second cost - current mana regen).

You are mistaken. JoW works off of base mana now.

Hmm... okay, well it still worked very well. I first tried in when soloing, throwing on this shield plus my healing gloves when grinding up my Mag'har rep. Before, my mana was dropping steadily, but this made a total difference.

Anyway, if mana is an issue when dpsing, a good strategy seems to be throwing on an intellect/mp5 shield. If there is time to actually put on gear, a couple pieces of mail can help out with the mana issues.

You could also use Seal of Blood.

Would seal of blood pose some danger to the user with full Thaddius stacks?

Not really, I always use blood on Thad.

I don't think I've ever used SoB, so I have no idea how hard it hits. I just remember a ret gibbing himself with a crit on a weakened Trainee...

Yeah, well that's because you're hitting for like 300k on the trainees. I think the most I've crit for on Thad is like 16k, which is a 5-6k recoil.

Good call, Eanin. I´ll have to try this out. And yeah, SoB helps a lot on mana return as well. As long as I´m not consecrating I can pretty much last an entire fight without having to purposely stand in the colored shit for a while.
I used to play a paladin.

My understanding was that Corruption does significantly more dps than blood, which is why I switched to it.

Anyway, the shield is just for when I need to switch to dps mid-fight. I'm going to offspec a couple of pieces to mail, too, so maybe I can fit consecrate into the cycle when all I'm doing is dpsing on a fight.
