Soloing Gehennas (MC) as Prot

Postby Brutalicus » Mon Oct 05, 2009 8:52 pm

Just coming from my first FULL clear of Molten Core (solo, of course) and I thought I'd share my strategy for beating the hardest boss in there: Gehennas. You may have read various snippets of forum posts from people sharing their best attempts, and I'll show you how to beat his ass once and for all.

Preparation:
-Step 1: Get Restorative Potion. A bunch of them, since it will likely take practice. I'll hope for your sake you have an alchemist alt somewhere. Get him to Kargath's inn in Badlands and talk to Jarkal Mossmeld upstairs and pick up the quest: Badlands Reagent Run. Do this extremely simple (3-quest) chain and you will be taught the recipe (Alchemists only, of course) for the Restorative potion.

-Step 2: Get to him. I suggest taking the same route you would take to Garr only turning right instead of left. This is infinitely easier if Garr and Magmadar have fallen, as there will be fewer trash packs. You must clear a large percentage of the trash in his general vicinity and up his hallway, as you will be kiting him.

The fight:
Seal: Light; Judge: Light; Gear: High Stamina tanking gear (normal Prot gear); Aura: Fire. Blessing: Sanctuary. My HP was 39700 with these buffs only.
**EDIT** Here's My armory. Apologies if I'm stuck in Ret gear, but I don't recommend trying this as Ret.

First thing's first: THIS IS CRITICAL: use one Restorative Potion BEFORE you pull the boss. Pull him as quickly as possible to get maximum Curse-clearing (read: invincible) combat time.
When engaging Gehennas, focus on the boss and not his escorts. They will stun you once in a while, and this is annoying, but persevere. Kite the boss and his cronies backwards as you go through your basic tanking rotation (minus Consecrate, to save mana). Keep Sacred Shield up if you can. As soon as your 30 seconds of curse-curing is up, you'll start to dip pretty fast in the HP department. Keep kiting and you'll have enough time to survive. Let your AD save you the first time you get extremely low. Continue fighting as if nothing ever happened. SAVE YOUR MANA but continue to fight and when you dip very low (depending on your connection, 1500-3000HP I suppose) use your Bubble. You should have enough mana to cast 3 Holy Lights, at least. This will heal you pretty high and buy you some more time for Seal/Judgement of Light to heal you up further before being Cursed again. You can even use your Lay on Hands for good measure, because the mana will surely help. After taking another Curse, let yourself get fairly low (higher, if you've killed the adds already) and pop another Restoration potion. This is why you have to trigger your first potion before entering combat.
At this point, your Ardent Defender should be up again, but if you've done decent DPS the boss will die before it comes to that.

Notes: your mileage may vary, but I got pretty lucky on my first kill and didn't get Cursed until 15-20 seconds after my first Potion wore off. On the flipside, I had an AD proc ready by quite a large margin by the end.

TL;DR edition:
Restorative Potion before combat.
Normal rotation.
HP dips.
Let AD proc, don't bother using actual healing spells even though you're at 30% or whatever.
HP dips again.
Bubble. Heal as close to full as you can (30k+ hopefully).
Restorative potion when you get low again, Seal/Judgement of Light heal you for 30sec.
AD proc again, if you need it.

Hope this helps guys, sorry if it's a bit of a wall of text.

Well, with a TOC prot gear (~40k hp), I only use shadow resist aura.

My strat : I clean all the way to ragnaros lair. Kitt Gehennas and his adds there, while kitting I kill the add then gehennas.

Normally with 40k hp, I use, in order, ardent defender, divine protection (then heal to max), and if he is not dead yet your AD timer should be reset.

I think AD was the CD which allows us to kill him relatively easily (After Raganaros I think he is the hardest boss of MC)

After killing him again (with good latency) I can see where you're coming from. I didn't even come close to dying. And what kind of gear are you attempting Rag in that makes it hard? I've done it as Prot and Ret, but I was in full FR gear subbed into either set.

I notice that tyou folks seem to kite Gehennas quite a bit. I'd like to add my strategy in here for some opinions. I've finally managed to get to the point where I can one-shot everything in MC pre3.2 gear. For Gehennas, I just put up Shadow Aura, SoL, JoL and my Blessed Medallion of Karabor.

I don't kite Gehennas simply because I know how his RoF works. As soon as it begins the first time, I can simply move out of it - and from then on I will move back to my previous position just as the RoF ends. His RoF is recast about 1 second after it ends. Therefore without any actual 'kiting' I can completely avoid all RoF damage throughout the fight.

Took me a bit to perfect but Gehennas went from one of the hardest to solo in MC to another easy fight. Geddon and Ragnaros are the only ones I have trouble with anymore - I've found it easier to down Geddon if I pull 2-3 trash mobs with him.
Why can't a Warrior Thunderclap while silenced?

You're actually clapping your thighs together with a force so powerful that you generate a sonic boom and the resulting electrostatic energy. Unfortunately, when you're silenced, you can't generate the audible force from your thunder thighs.
