New patch is live in US, coming to EU tomorrow. It brings the updated Ranked Play system announced at Blizzcon, the change to Arena to bring it up to 12 matches from 9, the gold cap, the ability to abandon one quest a day (you get a random new quest), and the announced card changes.

There needs to be a reason to play against friends. Why have a friends list at all otherwise?

My proposal is a best of 5, or 7, arena tournament.

Invite your friend to play. The winner receives either 20 gold or a single card. The loser gets 10 gold, no chance of a card. That's not per hand but per tournament. The rewards would respect the 100 gold cap from Play mode and you would be limited to 5 victories per day but unlimited friend arena play.

Posted this to the official US forums and of course everyone's focus was on the rewards and why do you need a reason to play against your friends?

Rewards can be adjusted and worked out, shocker and that's why I made the post, but the current set up makes it the same as max play mode winnings. Reason to play your friend is that there is literally no reason to play them at all, one WoW guild has zero desire to do random match making but can't really progress without doing it so he won't play. WoW has a big focus on getting back to playing with your friends, Hearthstone could have some of that injected into it.

So what are your thoughts and suggestions?

How much incentive does there need to be? It's a competitive card game, if people want to play against friends they will.

I heard legends of people playing for fun. Read something about it in some Egyptian tomb.

While it would be nice... it would be abused by some to get "free" rewards (which I'm sure is why you suggested limits.)

Hey! I played HS for fun once.

It was awful.

P.S. Actually because the difference in drawn hands made the game a relative no-brainer.

I'm pretty sure fun isn't allowed in games.

Playing the new Ranked, seems Win Streak is pretty strong. Obviously there to quickly separate out the better players rather than have them lingering in the lower ranks. I'm only having to play one match per rank to advance. I'm at rank 21.

Mind you, having the extra rank-up screen pop up before the old level up one is kinda annoying. Maybe it's just because it has no sound effects right now.

From what I read the system is designed for upward mobility. Can't lose levels below 20, Winstreak from up to level 5 then rank 5 is where it gets harder.

I notice that due to the new feature to let you find the last person you played, your full Battletag is visible to every opponent.

Full battletag has always been visible to the opponents o.o

Or wait it shows the numbers too now?

On your social tab, it shows the full battletag, including number, of your last opponent, and lets you add them as a friend. Not a big thing, I guess, just don't think they usually make the full tag visible to strangers inside their games.

The new spell will interact with Starving Buzzard for card draw, it'll trigger things like Knife Juggler, could be used alongside the "+attack to beasts" minions, and killing the Hounds would work with the Hyena and things like Cult Master. Could actually work well.

Having played against the new UtH yesterday, I can confirm that it does, in fact, work rather well.

(Edit: That said, there's still no reason to play anything other than Mage until the next patch)

If your friend won't play with you without a reward, send him or her some real money for packs after the match. :P

Had a god-awful Arena run as a Warlock yesterday. Knew I shouldn't have picked Warlock because I'm not very familiar with the class, but did it anyway. Ended 1/3.

The 1 win was fun, though. I dropped an 8/6 Void Terror on turn 4, cloned it with Faceless Manipulator on turn 5, played a Pit Lord on turn 6, and then a Sea Giant on turn 7. My opponent had managed to delay with mirror images and Frostbolt but he conceded after that.

guess nerfing defender of argus isn't needed anyway. he's either stuck in your hand behind some card uncastable/unclickable or the game randomly switches around your minions every few seconds.

Oh yeah, I got a new variation on the old stuck-card bug yesterday. Rather than sticking out from behind another with a gap where it should be, it was completely behind, like there wasn't an extra card there. When I moused over the two cards would swap places, but if I tried to use one the game would select the one that was behind at the time. I almost ran out of time trying to get the right one out.

Finally got another 7 win run in Arena. With a Mage this time.

Questing Adventurer just wins games. If they can't kill it in one turn you just build it up again. Makes me want to build a deck that uses it. Any ideas which class would suit that best?

Aggro Lock sounds like a natural - you typically use a crapton of smaller spells, since you're going to draw more with your HP anyway.
Anything with strong draw sounds good, though.

I'm not a big fan of Warlock to be honest. Just feels like I'm tapping too much of my own life to play. (Maybe it's just because of that arena run where I was dropping 11 health on Imps and Pit Lord.)

Thinking Rogue (low cost spells); Hunter might work (Buzzard) but probably not reliable; Priest could maybe work with Cleric and heals to keep it up; a Mage deck with Arcane Missiles and Sorceror's Apprentices, maybe....

I was thinking of my "bouncy" Rogue deck I talked to you about, slap a couple of Sprints and you probably won't go out of juice too early.
You do risk holding one of those a while, though.

Ooh, what do you think of Wild Pyromancer for a Questing Adventurer deck? It'd come out neutral on health but gain attack while AoEing all other minions.

Deff need the Auctioneer then, and possibly play a variation of Mage stalling.

EDIT-ting because I hate doubles:

Still had a decent night yesterday (24 -> 17). while my deck works right against most opponents, it currently lacks something to make me go through late game heavy hitters.

Here's the current setup:

Fearie Dragon * 2
Acidic Swamp Ooze * 2
Argent Protector * 2
Equality * 2

Shattered Sun Cleric * 2
Aldor Peacekeeper * 2
Sword of Justice * 2

Spellbreaker * 2
Defender of Argus * 2
Dark Iron Dwarf * 2
Blessing of Kings * 1
Consecration * 2
Truesilver Champion * 2

Argent Commander * 2
Avenging Wrath * 1

Tirion Fordring * 1
Lay on Hands * 1

What I'm currently considering throwing out:
SSC is still nice, but I really need more oomph later on.
Spellbreaker is nice at times (bu-bye Sylvanas!) but it's really situational and may be worth only rolling one, or none at all
Consec. Current meta doesn't see more than 3 minions on the table. It can help to reset a bad starting board, but it's insanely rare that I can't drop anything worthwhile on turn 2 -> 4
Tirion might fly out for another fattie, depending.

What might make its way in:
Knife Juggler might advantageously replace the SSC, as they're roughly similar early on, but KJ remains useful later on when you can dump him + a minion + HP and still not lose much in case of a sweeper.
Guardian of Kings: I've heard it's a highly valued card nowadays because it annoys Mage as all hell.
I'm starting to think Hammer of Wrath is all around better than Consec for the same price.
If I can lay my paws on it, Sylvanas and/or a couple of Giants could be nice...

Yeah, healing is very annoying for a Mage.

Surprised you run no 1-cost minions. They can get you off to a very good start when it comes to your opponents' 2-drops.

Do you really need double Equality?

Me, I'm probably going to try a Frost Giants deck tonight. I have an arena run lined up (good Druid deck), and only need about 60 dust to craft the Giants I need. Will run Pyro instead of Alexstrasza.

Never been a big fan of 1-drops.

Maybe Noble Sacrifice, which can still throw quite a spanner.
My big problem is that Equality is my ONE real way to efficiently deal with fatties for now. Especially in a meta that favor Golems/Legendaries, I would have killed to draw my second Equality in quite a few of my losses.

Big minions can be annoying, but I've managed to cope without Polymorph.

Trying to think of Paladins' options for clearing bigger minions. Blessing of Might, Blessing of Kings, Divine Shield, Hammer of Wrath; Peacekeeper can make them less of a threat before you clear them... That's just off the top of my head, not being all that familiar with the class right now.
