im more upset about all the frickin trolls screaming its a wow clone, and yet keep playing
if you dont like the game, you dont HAVE to play it

and it you do play, then stfu about what game its similar too

and no its mot a wow "clone" it takes parts that wow did okay, makes them better (aoe looting ftw!)

rift takes parts from almost every MMO and integrates them.

we had an interesting convo on the server the other night before the beta shut down and came to the conclusion that everything stems from pong

Amirya:Why yes, your penis is longer than his because you hit 30k dps in the first 10 seconds. But guess what? That raid boss has a dick bigger than your ego.
Flex:I don't make mistakes. I execute carefully planned strategic group wipes.
Levie:(in /g) It's weird, I have a collar and I dont know where I got it from, Worgen are kinky!
Levie:Drunk Lev goes and does what he pleases just to annoy sober Lev.

Have to be honest I saw the "discussions" going on but ignored it all and just got on with the game (along with selective chat configuring I guess).

But Bldavis does have a point, Pong did do it better and first.

well my point in the convo was that every single mmoRPG and every RPG can claim its roots back to D&D

it was a side point that video games themselves came from pong

yea pretty much the spam. doesn't let you try out the game, you ask "well how are the quests lines?" and someone will say "its just like wow, its a wow clone" and the constant wow clone spam gets on your nerves.

I've been having fun as well. I'm a level 18 whatever human is called in Rift Warrior using the Champion/Riftblade souls (still haven't unlocked a third one :/) and my character is kicking some ass. My one complaint is about the questing: there doesn't seem to be much of a storyline after the opening levels and the quests seem kinda bland.

I think if leveling through battling rifts and invasions is fast (and fun) enough and if the dungeons are numerous and fun it might be able to offset the quests.

Awesome game so far> As far as folks saying WoW clone, when have you ever seen a Rift open up or a join public party button in WoW. I think there is plenty of differences to enjoy the game for what it is. I went Mage with Warlock and Necromancer souls.

Managed to hit 30 during the last event. I got bored of being an aoe/dots cleric around lvl 27. I went and swapped to a melee guy and got at it again :D

Once you pass the 1-9 chat, the wow shit tones down. 10-19 still has plenty a stupid conversations, but 20-29 and 30-39 is only serious chat and people discussing instance tactics, etc etc.

Can't wait for next beta :d

Here is my basic overview of the Beta for the weekend that I played. I must be jaded I am not as misty eyed or impressed as others in this thread not because Rift is a bad game, it actually seems quite polished. But nothing is really different from what I have played before. Now on the one hand this is a strength because it allows people that have played World of Warcraft to easily shift from that game into this one and other MMOs that follow similar keybindings, layouts, and systems. On the other it will lend itself to constant “clone” discussion which I won’t really comment beyond a short blurb.

It is a natural human tendency to compare things to what we know. For most MMO gamers World of Warcraft is a known quantity and so players who hate it will hold this game as everything it is not and those players who think Rift sucks will do the opposite. It’s not overly clever in either case and I can see why it could turn people but given the audience it is expected.

Now as far as the game is concerned I made it to 11 on my highest character, I enjoyed the character models but there is a very noticeable sameness in quest rewards at the start for the Guardians and the Defiant, meaning that the quest rewards were almost exactly the same in appearance for either side. Not a huge deal but I would have expected that they tried to make each side distinct from the start given the setup that these two forces are at war. I felt that the initial story for both sides was well done but overall questing was just that, quest texts to go kill X or bring Y to person B. The crafting system does not break any new ground as far as I can tell, beyond having different names. In fact I could say that Cataclysm has much better quest flow and quest technology then what I saw in Rift.

As for the Rifts themselves I like the idea, I always thought the Public Quest tool in WAR was a good idea too and having participated in some I could find them fun if there was enough people around to do them. I am not sure if this content scaled based on the number of players or not, I did find that at level 11 that I kept running into Rifts with level 19 enemies that pretty much one shot me. I later found I had easily stumbled into a higher level of the zone, no biggy just very odd.

Overall I think Rift is very polished, I just have yet to really see anything beyond the public quest system and the interesting mix and match class system that is overly compelling. I enjoyed the Reaver/Marshall/Paladin build I had going. I do think the game gives you way too many abilities to realistically use and the Macro system was woefully under-documented. In short it seems fun, but breaks almost no new ground, a far cry from its claim of being a next generation game.

Been having a blast in the betas, open beta starts this Tuesday the 15th(no codes needed). Vanifae's info is pretty well spot on imo, although from what I've been seeing on the official boards and in notes that this will be kind of midway between WoW and WAR.

I got to 20 but aspects I haven't seen posted:

Crafting: Works pretty much the same as WoW's professions but in all the production tradeskills I've picked up I've also been able to break down the same type of items I can make (weaponsmith- weapons, tailor- armor, runemaker- weapons and armor) much like enchanters can in WoW. I liked this because if a certain item isn't selling well I can just break it down to mats.

Rift seems to have a more world PvP slant than WoW. No arenas, no RvR lakes (like WAR) but they have made it so that the wardstones that signal rift enemies attacking are attackable by the opposing faction, so that players can dominate quest hubs on PvP servers. I want to say they are making NPCs on PvP servers give PvP quests for the open world as well.

Right now there are parsers available but no add-ons per se- lots of arguing for and against them on the official boards at the moment.

LFG: The LFG for warfronts (battlegrounds) are crossserver, but is limited to your own server for dungeons atm (again, lots of arguing back and forth regarding it).

Best aspects: I love the class/soul system- being able to have (I want to say 4) specs that you can switch on the fly is really nice, and that there are only four major classes (Rogue, Cleric, Warrior, and Mage) makes it so alting like crazy isn't really necessary, but the variety of souls available in each class makes it so you may want to. I also like what they've done with the rift events- a big problem I had with WAR's PQs was there were rarely people around to do them. In Rift, the difficulty of the mobs is dependent upon the local population- none I've been around last beta were soloable by me, but ymmv- I could easily trio all stages of Rifts when few people were out.

They do have armor dyes available on NPC merchants and there is dev discussion on having an outfit tab like LoTRO after launch.

There will be 5 and 10 man content, and 20 man raids.

Downsides: so far just beta testers that want the game to be exactly like WoW- flying mounts, arenas, cross-server LFD, add-ons for everything but it's a typical beta community atm and of course everyone is trying to push their own agendas on the boards

TL;DR: The game has a lot of potential, has an amazing amount of polish for beta- it's nothing new by any means but it's fine at least if you're burned out on your current game or are waiting for the next big game.

Pretty sure it goes at least as far back as Chainmail, if not farther.
- I'm not Jesus, but I can turn water into Kool-Aid.
- A Sergeant in motion outranks an officer who doesn't know what the hell is going on.
- A demolitions specialist at a flat run outranks everybody.

Goddammit, I want to see if they fixed the Shaman and Druid trees already to make them less horrible. I'd sorely love to be able to play a hulk smash cleric if possible, but from my experience in the last beta I'll probably end up as a Rogue. RS/BD tanking is fun, as is Assassin DPS and Bard support.

On a related note, holy fuck my poor dated Core2Duo hates me right now. WTB my Sandy Bridge i5 already.

Haven't been able to play, but reading off the wiki, I think I'm likely to try a necro/plant(chlorowhatsit)/dom mage. Not sure where I'm going with that, but they seem like interesting souls, and the combination should be intriguing :)
