Gezundheit. ;)

The concept itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just that it's not nearly as rewarding when applied to items in a virtual world instead of something truly important in life, in my opinion.

That was cool to learn, though. I actually find it fascinating when other cultures have words to describe things that are particularly difficult to describe in English!

I suppose its just one of those agree to disagree things.

However, you can't discount ffxiv because of ffxi. ffxiv is expressly intended for a more casual player base.

I've been saying for a long time now, that if anyone could make a game thats ffxi+wow, they would have an absolutely fantastic game, and I'm hoping thats what ffxiv is. (ie, a more casual ffxi) I mean, they've already announced the ability to change your hairstyle in ffxiv :D

That's exactly why I'm excited. I did quit ffxi because of some of those things, like deleveling and waiting 4 hours for an NM to pop then have it taken by someone who just got there (though when you won it, it felt great). I wasn't able to play the game again until two years ago when they fixed a lot of the frustrating stuff, though not all.

So with this new game they are keeping all the stuff I loved and none of the annoying crap is there. Crafting is still challenging but you don't lose your materials, you either craft the item or you craft HIGH quality items, like +1's and +2's, but you don't lose your items.

I still understand the hesitation from old FFXI players because of how the dev team handled things with that game. Again I"m being optimistic because of what I've read and I think this time around they are trying to listen more per the list I added earlier. Those where all in response to community feedback.

No pics as I'm at work, but have you seen the coblyns around Ul'duh? They're seriously weird for low-level trash.

As for 'difficulty', I cut my teeth on EverQuest so current WoW is about as far from that as you can get. I'm hoping 14 will be somewhere in the middle, but until they announce the end-game content we won't really know. The levelling, though, is really nice and relaxed - it's nice to log on, teleport over, clear a couple of leves and feel accomplished in an hour or so. I'm hoping that'll last through the full 1-50. Also it's really pretty :)

So I got the beta installed last night, made a character, and logged in. I'm finding myself frustrated by the lack of info in the online manual, sluggish controls, and complete lack of sound. I tried playing with the in game config but the volume sliders make no difference. And since I'm only starting now I can't even view the test and bug report forums to find out if there's a solution to the lack of sound problem. What the heck is the point of having a beta test where you can't report or find out about bugs? Anyway, is a lack of sound a known issue, and is there a solution anyone knows of?

So, I've had the C/E a day now. Sitting in a comfy reclining char playing with a 360 controller, it's a world away from WoW. Very relaxed :)

I've also been exploring. I think I found a high level zone...

(For those not familiar from the beta, I'm level 9ish which means my total HP is about 700).

HAHA I love that. Reminds me of the chills I got every time I ran into a goblin in a higher level zone...had to be sooo sneaky.

Problem is that their stupid Config client defaults to Japanese on the first run. Not sure why they did that...

I think all the localization *ingame* has been tweaked, as I've seen some changes in the main Ul'dah lvl 1 questline. I also haven't seen the famous [en] yet.

You get this error because you can't run the config while the client is open, no idea why they made it load as Japanese the first time though.

How did you get your 360 controller to work on the PC? I might want to try that over the keyboard/mouse, but then communication may be a pain.

Also, what have you been doing after the leves? At the moment I'm level 8, finished the battlecraft leves and the introductory leves, but after that I'm kind of lost on what to do. Other than grind mobs, I made an attempt at cooking and got a couple levels but blew half the gil I had already on ingredients. Other than doing leves and selling drops, how else can you make gil? Problem is, I have no idea how to price things and how to see what may be worth something as opposed to something worth nothing =/

You need to get the XBOX 360 Contoller for PC: http://goo.gl/5cr4 (The Play'n'Charge kit for wireless controllers won't work). If you're set on wireless, you can get the PC wireless base station too (like $40), but the USB one works fine and doesn't require batteries.

As far as what to do: You can hop over to another city by hoofin' it, and do their battlecraft leves. Your leves will reset after 36 hours, supposedly, so you can go back and do your home-city leves, and then any others. Doing leves in another city is tedious for the first time, but later on you can Teleport there to do them, so it just becomes a question of managing Anima.

If you don't wanna do that, you can always grind! The FF way! ;)

Once you hit 10, you'll have more leves and quests available (likely at your class' guild). Keep exploring :D

Yeah I ran to Ul'dah from Limsa Lominsa last night, wasn't too bad. I didn't know you could do battlecrafts from the other cities as well, looks like I'll be doing Ul'dah and figuring out how to get to Gridania today. My friend and I have been duoing the legion difficulty leves so far. I don't really want to be grinding though, it's very tedious that way. Do you have any tips on getting more gil? The one thing I hated about FFXI was that I couldn't find an effective way to make gil because I had none to begin with =/

Not really sure, since I mostly have worried about "how to level" when I was playing in Open Beta, and I haven't played much of my live account. Definitely doing your city quests helps, although they don't give you as much gil as you got in Open Beta. http://www.ffxivcore.com is a really good website with a thriving community. It might be worth trolling or posting over there.

Good luck :)

I've been reading the core forums too, but a lot of the posts aren't too helpful at the moment :P

So just to confirm, I can do all 3 cities battlecraft leves, which I'd assume is 12 leves total? Only because my friend is telling me you can only do 8 total per 36 hours.

Not 100% sure. I think you can only do the area's levequests every 36 hours. I'm pretty sure you should still be able to trade in your completed leves to the new city. Haven't done it myself, just found a post of a dude who was min-maxxing levequests on core.

I've been gathering, I made 20k yesterday from selling crafted necklaces.

You have enough money from your battle leves to buy some gathering weapons + crafting weapons.

I went and got the goldsmithing and mining leves after I finished my battle ones. Did the mining ones first then did the goldsmithing. Then I concentrated on mining for a while and searched for some recipes and crafted them.

Then at night instead of using the market ward retainer I left myself with a bazaar right outside the adventurers guild with my crafted items for sale. I went to check my char this morning and she was sold out =)

Hustle baby hustle!

At level 20 more of the main story line continues.

If you have finished all your leaves and crafting to your satisfaction start a new class so you can build up sub abilities for your main class.

Read they will be implementing NPC side quests soon, not sure when though...if on the 30th or later.

Noob question: how do you search for recipes in game? It seems like you need to put one of your ingredients in the synthesis tool window and hit main hand/offhand to pull up the recipe.

Also, how are you determining how much to sell your crafted items for? It seems like it's very hard to get a gauge on that at the moment.

As far as the pricing goes...I suppose that's part of setting a new economy in the game. I suppose go on what you think it was worth to you.

As far as recipes, sometimes you learn what they are from doing the guildleves, it will show you how to do some, another way is looking on the official players site they have recipes there, also looking at the fan site wikis, that's what I've been doing...or you can try experimenting putting random stuff in your craft pile to see if you discover anything.

So after not doing any research, I made a gladiator starting in Gridania and got it up to level 5 in physical level and class level. I'm not quite sure what i need to do to start gathering or crafting.

I started to look at ffxivcore and saw that apparently I should have started off as a marauder, since people that start as gladiators and don't get a shield until later tend to be kinda gimped, since they don't learn all the shield skills.

So now I'm thinking of deleting my character and starting a new one. Possibly starting out in Ul'duh, that way I can go to the mining and blacksmithing guilds. since apparently there isn't one of either in Gridania...

Even if the guilds are not in that city you can still do that craft/class.

All you have to do is buy the tools for them. And they sell them at the blackwood stalls in Gridania, in fact all tools for all gathering/crafting/classes are sold in every city.

And if you want you can pay someone to port you to the major cities in order for you to learn the Aetherite teleport so you can go there when you really need to use the guild facilities.

I've a Goldsmith/Miner/Weaver/Thauraumage in Gridania, I'm rank 11-13 in each of those..I've been skilling up the local guildleves for the crafts and using some Regional for mining, and it's been a breeze, and I've made tons of money because I sell everything I craft overnight.

I use my reatiner as pure storage and my main character as my actual bazaar. I stand outside the adventurers guild and leave myself over night, when i go see myself in the morning everything is usually sold.

I can sort of see that, I started Gladiator and didn't get a shield until 11-12, so now my shield skill is only 3 or 4. Still, I'm sure it'll catch up soon enough. Shields are about 10k at the moment so probably affordable quite soon for you, maybe it's not a problem.

As far as I can tell, although you can buy gathering and crafting weapons in any city, only some combat weapons are sold in each (in Gridania I've only seen archer, lancer and thaumaturge for sale from NPCs) so you might need to plan around that if you want to swap to gladiator later.
