I've never been big on alts in any game. Thinking back on WoW, I had 3 max level characters by the end of Wotlk. When Cataclysm came out, I made a 4th alt (warrior) but only got my DK and Warrior to max level and the rest were left at 80.

For GW2, I have 2 level 80 characters and my other alts are all below level 10.

I've never really been able to ration my time between two games very well. Especially MMO's.

I'm surprised at the amount of people on a Paladin forum that haven't played Guardians/Warriors.

Just started leveling one myself. The issue I always have with all my characters is coming up with a weapon setup I like and a build to go with that, which is why I've hesitated doing Guardian till now.

My first instinct was to go with Guardian, but I wanted to do something different for a change. So I went with Necromancer, which I found quite enjoyable. But really had a good time with Guardian as well.

For my Guardian I used Sword/Focus and Mace/Shield in my weapon slots while levling. Now that I'm 80 I've switched to Greatsword, using a build called "AHEM Guardian", which is supposedly the current favoured PvE build for them.

They are finally doing something with that stupid karka island. About time but holy crap, what an unbalanced pile of shit zone. The enemies are really stupid. It was quite hilarious to watch a single, non veteran reef drake take down 4 people because of its ability to stack a massive confuse, vacuum and knockdown. It feels like I spend more time knocked down/stunned vs those enemies than actually controlling my character and it is awful frustrating. It feels like they are just using cheese abilities to add difficulty rather than interesting mechanics.

I think my issue with the living story stuff is it moves too slowly to keep me interested for long. I'm the kind of person that appreciates large chunks of content being released at once because I can sink my teeth into it for longer periods of time. Anet keeps saying that their focus will be more on the living story stuff rather than an expansion for the near future and I can't say I'm all that happy with that decision. Ah well. I may be in the minority. I can definitely see the appeal of a smaller but more steady flow of content. I just kind of wish there was both. I think the next big thing that will make me play regularly again will be their dungeon finder tool.

I think I would've appreciated something like living story if I was playing a lot every day, like I did with WoW. But with GW I play veeeer sporadically. Usually have a few days in a row where I play quite a bit, then go off the game for weeks. Been playing Diablo 3 again recently. Do we have a Diablo 3 thread somewhere?

Finally finished my armor set for my elementalist. It took a lot less dungeon stuff than I thought it would considering I'm only using two dungeon items. The rest is from the Vigil faction vendor.

Vigil shoulders, gloves and leggings. Sorrow's Embrace boots and Crucible of Eternity chest piece.

Think I'm just putting it off now, until I get a new computer. I've accumulated a lot of console games I never had the time to play while I was active in WoW, so now I'm trying to make up for it.

Anyone still playing? Trying to find theorycrafting sites with up to date info (for update 3, but I guess unless it's been completely overhauled, some older stuff could work as well.)

Currently playing an Asura Guardian that's inching close to 60. It's enjoyable, I just don't know if I'm aiming for the right stats/traits for what I'm wanting to do. For now, I mostly just use whatever weapon/gear I have with the best damage and stats I think I want (power/precision usually, with a smattering of toughness/vitality.) Wanting to be a tanky type, but I'm learning that melee tanks aren't always the best... and from what I have read, Guardians might lean more towards a support/healing role?

From the Frustrations thread. Might be relevant to some here too.

On what classes are "meta" these days: Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist are definitely meta they say.

From my friend:

Tell him to play whatever the hell he wants. It doesn't take that long to take a character to max. GW2 really is a game where you just need to play them all a bit and see what you find fun.

If he wants a 100% casual guild that has lots of new players and a few older ones who enjoy helping nubs, send him my way. We have no serious dungeon runs, we will always accept a player if we have room, and we will always try to cater to the lowest player if we haven't specifically arranged to do something else.

Add me at Era.6453 if you want (goes for anyone else too). I don't play much these days and I'm in bloody Japan so timezones are wacky, but hey.

Downloaded it and gave it a spin yesterday (going to get around to adding you and looking for that guild this weekend, Era :) )

One thing though - from playing to Level 5 (way too short, I know) and looking at the wiki, it seems as if the game is mostly autoattacking and using buttons with cooldowns of 8 seconds, 15 seconds or even longer? What am I missing?

I'm afraid that's correct.

High level rotations usually include swapping between 2 weapons and using every skill of both weapon on cd, and that's about it.

The difficulty of the game isn't really in playing the character: it's in the amount of shit happening in dungeons / pvp, and the near absence of healing; you actually have to avoid everything..... and do interesting paths and stuff to reach points of interest in the maps.

Hmm, so not very interesting solo game then. When can you start running dungeons?

I'm going to give it some more time, because I don't actively dislike it yet like I did FFXIV (I badgered on With that one because a friend highly recommended it), but it may be time to just play Dark Souls.

I found it actually very good for soloplay, that is, if you like exploring and storyline. The storyline includes a lot of solo dungeons, actual dungeons start at level 35 iirc.

I do like it, which is why I'm going to keep on playing. I'm just also looking for something like TSW at launch (nicely challenging) or Death Knight gameplay (with enemies that don't reduce the DK to Festering/Scourge Strike spam). I can always play two games at once.

After raiding WoW HC, I agree that not a lot of things are truly challenging anymore. Lich King 25M HC will forever be my favourite boss encounter. GW2's PvE challenge is, like Worldie says, mostly to find in high end dungeons or the open world puzzles. Some of them are pretty tough, not because they're hard to figure out, just the movement is hard to execute perfectly enough.

I tend to level a GW2 char from 1-80 and then play something else for a while. If I'm gonna commit to something more difficult/organized, it might as well be WoW.

Haven't played any big single player games in a while (mostly just shorter indie games etc), so afraid I can't recommend anything.

Friend and I who play pretty much everything together went Guardian/Mesmer on our first playthrough. We're currently sitting at 80 waiting for HoT (23ish Oct iirc.) I've done a grand total of one dungeon, one fractal (more or less heroic dungeons) and zero PvP. Still managed to have quite a bit of fun. Really wish PvP wasn't required for 100% map completion though. I definitely like that you can be in multiple guilds and it doesn't matter which server you're on unless you're doing WvWvW.

I've only got 5 character slots, and four of them are already filled (Necro, Elementalist, Guardian, Warrior) so I'm trying to figure out what to do with the last one. Had a bunch of level 20 boost scrolls and a few level 30 boost scrolls from the birthday presents, so currently using the level 20 scrolls to try out the remaining classes. So far I like Mesmer and Thief the most. Ranger was okay. Not tried Engineer yet. I play each class for a few levels (20-25 ish) and then delete it to try a different one. Once I decide, I'll use a level 30 boost scroll and that'll be it.

Really conflicted about HoT. I know I should buy it soon (like, right now) if I'm gonna buy it at all, so I can get the pre-order goodies (like an extra character slot), but I play so little already and I'm not sure I'll ever bother doing any end-level (80) content (other than random world bosses).

Dnow, I liked GW2 leveling, istance and combat system, but the insane elitism of the people when I played (up to about the release of first expansion basically) really really killed my will to level cap (not having friends or a serious guild I was basically forced into randoms).
How much is the new exp $$$?
