Re: [10] Arthas
The thing about defile is that you have 1.5 seconds to react to it. Players need to learn to be spread out on their own. For instance, if your melee are beating on a valk... they should try to be spread out on either side of it. If one of them gets targeted by defile, the run away from the rest, while the rest runs away from him.
In fact, that's ALWAYS the proper way to deal with defile -- the target runs one way, everyone else runs the other. If defiles on valks are a problem, then EVERYONE needs to get away from the valk before the defile is cast. We have to do this on 10-man heroic, and we still have plenty of time to finish off the valk. Your raid should be much the same on normal mode.
With your DPS, it sounds like the valks should be dying before they're even halfway to the edge (assuming they start at the center). So, again, plenty of time for everyone to move away from the valk, let defile cast, and move back.
Best of luck!

DBM has timers for valks and defile. 5 seconds prior, call for a scatter or collapse. If it means letting the valk fly off with someone, 1 dead person is better than 10 dead people.
Also, during the interstitial phase, there's no reason to not stack adds. The time savings is significant -- and 75% on the 3rd add is really quite high.

DBM has also been known to fuck up rather tremendously.

Do you use it?
My point being that DBM is more helpful than not, and it will provide you with something to make calls with such that a defile (which also has a substantial cast time) will not spawn under 5 people, causing a wipe.
Have we had wipes because we called a collapse because DBM suggested valks would be coming before defile and was (spectacularly) wrong? Yes. But we'd have many, many more wipes without it.

You end up being able to predict when the defile will be first anyway. Usually if the valkyrs are shown as less than 3-4 seconds prior to the defile, it'll end up being defile first. If there's any doubt about which is going to come first, it's not that hard to be loosely spread out and collapse in when you see the emote that accompanies the valkyr spawning.

Re: [10] Arthas
Going back in with the group tomorrow night, been watching the fight online a bunch of times.
Belloc, def going to inform everyone what you said about handling defile. I agree 110% with you on that method.
I also think there are 3 or 4 of us who are more raid aware then the rest of the group and can handle multi-tasking better. Going to suggest assigning out people to call out defile and valk timers (seems to work fine on valk but no one has been pointing out the defile until its a WTF HOLY $%&# moment). I want everyone to be running with cast bars on LK so they can see it themselves too. Overall raid awareness for the group I would grade as a B+/A- so I know this group can do it with more practice. Just a little scared of how long LK could take after how long getting sindy down took

Re: [10] Arthas
So a question here on the Soul Reaper mechanic... I got a very very odd event last night and can't figure it out. I really wish I'd logged it, but didn't, so here's my best recollection of the combat log. This was on my feral alt druid, icc 10 normal, with about a 245-251 average ilvl gear and ~78k HP. This occured early in P2, but with no ragings left alive and no valk up. The defile occured shortly before, maybe around 00:33 ish.
00:39: Soul reaper applied. ~23k Shadowstrike tick after partial resist.
00:39: Barkskin gained. The combat log showed these with the exact same time stamp, but did show the soul reaper application first.
00:40-00:43: a couple melee hits, followed by being healed to 94.6% health.
00:44: Soul reaper hits for ~50k (shadowstrike), no resist.
00:44: Melee hit for ~15k
00:45: Melee hit for ~15k, ~10k overkill, dead.
00:45: All buffs, including barkskin and prayer of shadow protection, fade.
So... 1.27 second window according to skada (can only get the combat log to display to the nearest second), 50k soul reaper, melee, melee, dead. Here's my problem: Soul reaper with barkskin up hits for ~34k. This one definately hit me for 50k, but barkskin had been up for ~5 seconds, and was still up at death. To affect the FINAL tick of soul reaper, does it have to be up at the application? I realize I had some miserable avoidance luck in there, and no, I don't have my 4pc on that toon. Also, this coincided very closely with an infest I believe, and there might have been a ~7.5k infest hit at about 00:43, I'd have to look when I got home. Any thoughts?

Re: [10] Arthas
Ok, an update, my combat log was dumped as expected, but here's everything I could pull from the death log from skada. I died at 00:46, which lines up with what I remember from the combat log. I wish this showed buffs/debuffs, but it doesn't. Any ideas? Was this just bugged, or did I need to have that barkskin up before the initial application of soul reaper to get the 20% mitigation on the 50k? Edit: Nope, no infest.
