pre 70 gear advice

Postby caboom » Wed Jun 04, 2008 2:18 am

Hi i just hit 58 and i'm on my way to outland, and since there is no need for uncrushability and all at my lvls, i wanna ask what i should look for in my gear, and the items that i chose from quests and boss drops etc.

i am gonna do 5 mans till 70 so if i understood well i need to look for spell dmg and bv, whilist maximizing my armor and stamina as best as i can, is that correct ? if not plix be kind enough to list out what you think it would be best.

also how important is to have dodge items at these lvls compared to raw armor and stamina items(i had to make such choices, and prolly will again till 70)

tnx.

there is alotta info there, but it mainly covers gear after 70, or gear that is to be used at 70, for 5 mans and raids, but there are just a few choices till let's say 65, and i wanna know what stats to aim for, not the specific gear i should use :p

Stamina and spelldamage basically. If you can get some defense in there go for it, but you won't see much +def gear before the mid-to-late 60s.

tnx, but i also wanna know what should i chose in between a piece of armor with some defense rating but with low sta and armor or a piece with more armor and more sta but w/o any def rating(or with other stats like str etc, these items are common at my lvl) ?

There are a few items which will still be relevant at level 70 when you start getting ready for raids/heroics:

The first time you do the escort quest in Mana Tombs, make sure you get the [item=29325]Flesh Beast's Metal Greaves[/item].

From the Cruel's Intentions quest, you want [item=28042]Regal Protectorate[/item].

From Underbog, you'll want [item=24457]Truth Bearer Shoulderguards[/item] or [item=24463]Pauldrons of Brute Force[/item].

Other than those, your main priority is to get to 70 as fast as possible. This means you need spell damage (to aoe grind), stamina/armor (to survive aoe grinding) in whatever combination you feel comfortable with.

Use whatever one you like the most. Seriously. In your shoes, I'dve probably taken the defensive stats, but there's really no right or wrong answer. The high stamina option's much better when facing casters, for instance.

I don't want to appear condescending, but with the possible exception of the few items that Rolo mentioned, there's no point in worrying about what you pick up in the 2-4 weeks it's gonna take to go from 60-70.

Look for a solid amount of stamina, decent spelldamage (good for threat in instances and killing mobs solo), and whatever defensive stats you can sqeeze around that.

Have to agree with the other posters, on my second paladin I spec'd prot from day one, and basically up until lvl 57 the choice of gear is limited to warrior defence gear. Then all I did was check the AH for Champion, sorcerer and Elder items. Double stamina, defence, spell damage and mana regen. These items will help you no end while your levelling, if you can replace them every 3 levels as the item levels have substancial increase's in the stat's available.

I picked up a a lot of champion, then made sure i got the high chief of winterfall trinket, the stormpike exhalted trinket (mmm dodge), force of will and the hand of justice. The winterfall and Stormpike are easiest to get one's quested the other is honour towards your lvl 70 gavel.

From there it's a case of taking a beating in the instances till you get some outland blues. Take note of everything expressed here you need to aim to cover your gear requirements for 70 till then the easiest source is your local AH.

Up till now I've been taking only +stam and +def stuff and maybe a +spell ring and back. Seems to be the right thing as going through stuff like ramps, bf, ub and sp is a breeze.

If you remain standing and the group stays alive you know you've made the right choices.

You'll want to get as much stamina as you can, and a good amount of defense. Spell damage really isn't much an issue in instances at your level, but it makes your grinding more efficient.

Also, one of the best tankadin items while leveling is the Shield of the Wayward Footman which requires lvl 65 or 66 and can be had for about 50g on the AH.

of the elder is amazing stuff. I put on as much as i can, stack spell damage and goto town. The mana/5 helps keep me going after the fight is over and I just move from mob to mob with little downtime...unless i'm fighting casters then it takes some downtime.

It will however give you problems in boss fights unless you have a very good healer (which are kind off hard to find when levelling these days). And as mentioned before by others, for tanking at these levels +spell isn't that important. I have no problems keeping aggro running instances with almost no spelldamage.

Ran SP last night with a rogue 3 lvls higher (and great dps) and two mages constantly using aoe. No need to give anyone salvation and had absolutely no problems keeping aggro.

Fully agree Spectrum, you're also spot on about the price. Bought it this morning on AH for 50g on the Agamaggan server.

As other's have said, as long as you focus on stam, armor, def rating, and spell damage in some combo you should be fine to 70. You can always come back later to grab items you missed, but of course it's more convienient if you try to get them when you are first running an instance. At 70, you can start running some of the 70's instances and filling in your gear.
