Question about SoV being used by both Tank and DPS
I seem to think that I read a post within the last few months about how SoV coming from different sources "interact" with each other.
It seemed to be to the effect that - Scenario:
Tankadin and Retadin in group together.
Boss fight, both Paladins are using SoV.
Prot stacks SoV to 5, Ret has 2-3 stacks.
Effect = ?
5 stacks + 3 stacks
5 stacks only
3 stacks only
TL;DR -
Q - Would Ret using SoV reduce its effectiveness for Prot?
Thanks Tanks!

I believe there was some interaction at one time when it came from different sources, but I thought that that was generally considered a bug and had been removed. Any chance you can link where you read that?

Nowadays it should always be using your amount of stacks to determine everything, I believe the patch that made Onyxia level 80 fixed the old issue where it'd use the lowest stack to determine seal procs and the like.

WoWhead doesn't seem to have any info about this, and WoWwiki just has the patch notes, no analysis or insight.

Cool, thanks.
I scanned through posts back to early September and didn't find anything about it.
And since it seems like if this ever did happen it should now be fixed I am going to not worry about it.
Let the stacking of Paladin DoTs commence!
Cheers~!

Re: Question about SoV being used by both Tank and DPS
I'm pretty sure was either one of the iterations of the Ulduar patches (3.1.x) or 3.2.1 where the change was made. It used to be that a Ret Paladin with low stacks could use the higher stacks from a Prot Pally to determine procs. It gave them a bit less wind-up time in PVE, and I can remember my Ret Pally mate being very excited about being in a raid with Ulu.
Be careful when you argue with trolls, lest you become one.

Currently, the two SoVs are independent. They only affect their owners.

It was actually a bit more complicated than that - each player's Judgement and SoV procs were using the lowest stack of Holy Vengeance on the mob to determine damage.
Which meant that a Prot paladin got nerfed damage while the Ret built his stack, and the Ret got an extra full-strength hit or two in before his first stack was applied. It was never a large effect though, and was fixed pretty quickly in a patch.
