Got hammered in my first run through heroics

Postby loudent2 » Wed Jul 08, 2009 10:59 am

So I made 80 a few days ago and decided to try my hand at heroics. I'm a casual player but I've read the boards and other sites about gear and such and thought I had things under control. Defense was over 540, my gear was mostly tempered saronite with a few pieces from instance runs (I think my armor was ~23000 buffed) and my health was around 20,000. So we put together a group for UK. Now, mind you, I'm not familiar with the zone and perhaps the group wasn't ideal but I got hammered.

Eventually one of the players replaced me as main tank and we worked our way through the zone (we had another wipe or 2 even with him as MT). I get that my gear is basically the minimum required (although how am I supposed to upgrade without heroic instance runs?) but UK is the lowest level 80 heroic. Shouldn't that be somewhat doable?

The problem wasn't me holding aggro it was being able to stay alive.

Any ideas on how I should progress so I can effectively tank even the lowest level heroics?

Being defense capped and having that much health is definitely a minimum. At your level of gear you want to pump up your health as much as possible while staying defense capped. The thing that makes you hard to heal is the bursty damage, where you get killed before the healer can react.

As for gearing up even without heroics, you can get some decent gear from rep and crafted (Tempered Titansteel and Titansteel Shieldwall) without really doing too many heroics. Also, if you want to tank you should consider getting as many enchants as you can reasonably afford and make sure you have all blue gems (the stam and defense ones are pretty cheap).

Being a tank means your gear will always be very important. DPS and healers can slack a lot more on gearing and make it through, but an undergeared tank is very obvious.

Good luck, you'll make it.

(Also, you might have had a crappy healer.)

Until your gear gets better you need to use CC on pulls, 20k health is pretty low even for heroics. Make sure you are keeping holy shield up, and the mobs in front of you. Sacred Shield yourself before the pull and use your stun if the damage intake seems high to buy some time.

An armory link might be helpful, so we can make sure talents and gear/gems/enchants are appropriate.

Last time I logged out i was in my ret gear/spec, I'll switch to protection and post a link. As for glyphs, I stil have only 2 major ones as I've just made 80 recently have haven't gotten around to getting a third. I have the divine plea one and the seal of vengence one. The only minor one is the Lay on hands one.

Wtih my gear I only have 3 slots (all made with the BSing skill) one is stamina the ther 2 are defence because, without the gems my defense drops below the minimum (although that may not be entirely true any more)

Tempered titansteel seems like an attractive next step. I've managed to win the roll for a frozen or band have some titansteel bars stored up. which peice should I focus on upgrading (will probalby be able to make 1 peice)?

Also, which faction has the best rewards for tanks? If' I'm going to grind faction it might as well be for something that will give me an edge up in the future.

I believe the wrymrest faction has a couple of decent items at the heroic level. Then there's the enchants, Sons of Hodir for the shoulders and Argent Crusade for the head slot.

Easiest titansteel item to get first: the shield. It has a metric fuckton of defense on it, which definately helps newer tanks maintain the defense minimum as well as boost their avoidance a bit when it (definately) takes them above 540.

Aside from the obvious gearing issues, what kind of rotations are you using? Are you sure you have Holy Shield up 100% of the time?

Plus, you're healer may have just plain sucked. Even the best tank can't get through an instance without at least a semi-competent healer. That may have added to the issue as well.

Get us a link to the armory and we can help you out.

This.

I just got a new tankadin in my guild and ran several heroics with him. His stat were nearly identical to yours. I had absolutely no problem healing him through a timed CoS run on my shaman. (of course my shaman is fairly well geared)

Just do/read everything you can to take care of business, it may just be a bad healer...

Ok, here's the link to my gear http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Draenor&n=Eolorn.

Rotation is 969 although I work in excorcism when I can and I use avenger's shield on som pulls and fights with multiple mobs. Holy shield clicked whenever it's up and I try to maintain facing but it can be difficult sometimes. I've just gotten sacred shield so I could probably be putting that up more often before fights.

You well over the defense minimum so you can swap out some of the defense gems for stamina. Also, some of you gear is not enchanted. I realize it's temporary gear, but there are some enchants you can get that will help. Health or Def on your chest, Stamina or Def on the shield, and the new 40 stamina enchant on the gloves and Armor/Agi/Def on your cloak. You don't have to get the highest level of each of those to cut costs a bit. Get your AC rep up and get the head enchant as well. That one is fairly easy to get up quickly.

For now it's likely a gear issue. Plan on using some CC.

Yeah, I could probalby be more dilligent with enchants, especially as I've been leveling with a guy who's training them and get them at will. Just seems such a waste since gear turnover can be pretty brisk (although it's been slowing down).

so, it's a gear issue. what do you recomend I work toward first?

Buy the Wyrmrest Accord tanking cloak, you have the rep for it and it's better than what you are wearing. Also work up your Argent Crusade rep to Revered, so you can get the head enchant, it's really a must. Swap a few defense gems to stamina ones, just take care to stay at or above 689 rating - and don't skimp on gem quality, blue rare quality gems are often cheap anyway.

You can make a Titansteel Shield Wall, which should be easy to get as you have both mining and blacksmithing. It will give you more armor and a big chunk of defense, which can let you swap out subpar stuff like the Regal Protectorate once you have suitable trinkets. If someone in your guild likes old content, you can always run Magister's Terrace heroic with them to try to get a Commedation of Kael'thas for the trinket slot, but unless you really like that stuff I think it's sorta wasted time... Heroic Azjol'Nerub will over time give you better returns on the stamina trinket side if you can manage to run it regularly. ;)

You also mentioned that you're not terribly familiar with the instance, so that could be a part of the issue. The first pull can get messy if you're not careful with the patrols - if you're in a PuG you'll often get people saying things like "pull quickly" or "hurry up, my dinner will be ready, don't bother to mark". Always ignore these people - pull when it's safest.

After the first pull you're not bad until the pull in the boss room - there's two casters in it and they can be a pain if not taken care of. Pull with Exorcism and use your Avenger's Sheld to silence one of the casters, drawing him toward you a decently-geared DK can Deathgrip one if you are quick to taunt back from him.

First boss you can assign a Plate DPS or Enhancement Shaman or something to take care of the adds if you're having trouble. This fight can be made easier by getting your raid to stack up on top of you so that your Consecration will help kill the iceblocks etc.

After that you have the protodrake room - again, can be a pain if you're not careful. Just take it slowly and make sure you only get one at a time. You don't need to clear this room, just go down the left-hand side and make sure nobody facepulls.

Second boss get the caster to 10%, kill the melee guy then get back on the caster. This should minimise the possibility of the higher damage while the melee guy goes beserk.

For the final boss, it's essential you avoid his Smash. Simply strafe left or right when you see him casting it to get out of range. Install Deadly Boss Mods if you haven't already to help with this fight.

Knowing the instance is a big part of the battle - hope this helps :)
