Oh noes, theory crafting inc ;)

A little comparision between Opera helm and Heroic helm.
Stuff used:
EG -> Eternium Greathelm
FoD -> Faceguard of Determination
Subtle Living Ruby +8 Dodge
Thick Dawnstone +8 Def
Solid Star of Elune +12 Sta
Enduring Talasite +4 Def, +6 Sta
TED -> Tenacious Earthstorm Diamond +12 Def, Chance to Restore Health on hit
PED -> Powerful Earthstorm Diamond +18 Sta, 5% stun resist

EG MIX (recieves 4 dodge bonus)
R - Subtle Living Ruby
Y - Enduring Talasite
B - Solid Star of Elune

EG SSOE (no bonus)
R - Solid Star of Elune
Y - Solid Star of Elune
B - Solid Star of Elune

EG DEF (recieves 4 dodge bonus)
R - Subtle Living Ruby
Y - Thick Dawnstone
B - Enduring Talasite

FoD TED (recieves 6 sta bonus)
B - Solid Star of Elune
M - Tenacious Earthstorm Diamond

FoD PED (recieves 6 sta bonus)
B - Solid Star of Elune
M - Powerful Earthstorm Diamond

Code: Select all
EG MIX  EG SSOE  EG DEF  FoD TED   FoD PED
ARMOR   1178    1178     1178     1129      1129   ARMOR
STA       66      84       54       54        72   STA
DEF       38      34       46       44        32   DEF
DODGE     12       0       12       24        24   DODGE
BLOCK-R    0       0        0       24        24   BLOCK RATING
STR       31      31       31        0         0    STR
                                   hp@hit   5% stun

Fun facts:
  • FoD TED is basically the same as EG DEF, but has an extra 12 dodge, and 24 block rating which makes FoD TED the raw mitigation King.
  • If you only need stamina, EG SSOE gives a whopping 84 stamina and still provides 34 def, and it beats FoD PED with a hefty 12 sta.
  • However, FoD PED combines max stamina and max mitigation, making it sta/mit King.

When you add the meta gem bonus stat ontop of this... I think the winner is pretty clear. Alright, grinding 50 badges and coughing up the gold for a Meta can sting a bit, but the heroic reward helm simply beats the living snot out of the raid drop helm.

"Why didn't you put a +8 dodge in the FoD?"
I'm assuming you get the KoT 16def/17dodge glyph if you need mitigation. If you honestly think you need another 8 dodge on that helm, your other gear sucks ass and you need to get some serious upgrades asap. Pure hp maniacs might look at a +100 hp libram instead, perhaps some will get the ZG enchant (10 sta/10 def/24 heal).

"You forgot about T4!!!1"
No, I left it out of this little comparision. Brief summary:
For pure mitigation, FoD TED wins. T4 helm with Enduring Talasite and TED edges out the EG DEF tho.
For max stamina, T4 helm with Solid Star and PED has 1 sta and 100 armor over a FoD PED, but FoD PED has 24 blockrating. Both good, personal choice here. EG SSOE still beats them both with 11/12 sta tho.
T4 has 1227 armor, 24 int and 27 sp.dmg also, so if you desire these stats, it's a fine piece of armor.

Sorry if this didn't make much sense, but if you were wondering about these helms, enjoy. All stats are of c 2.1 patch values. :)

Here's the T4 faceguard

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29068#z0z

Socketed (Solid Star and Powerful Earthstorm (+30stam) ) we end up with

1227 armor
73 stam
24 int
29 def rating
24 dodge rating
27 spell dmg

The Faceguard
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32083#z0z

Socketed the same, of course, gives
1129 armor
72 stam
32 def rating
24 dodge rating
24 shield block rating

T4 wins imo. I don't need the shield block rating, especially after the other 2.1 item changes, and I also don't need the def rating, and I end up with the same dodge and more stam, plus int and spell damage which after 2.1 and the S.A. change I know I'm going to value. I'm trying to keep at least two pieces of Paladin gear on me (Helm/Shoulders), because my DPSers are starting to catch up to me in gear and one mage especially likes to make me work :P

Here's to hoping Prince drops it soon (Hunter last week :()

Agree with Jensaarai's post above. That's what I was trying to point out earlier while being too lazy to type out the details that he put so succinctly.
I still say, though, having both T4 and FoD set up to fill specific tanking need niches would be best (situationally appropriate gear choices and the ability to be able to alter your setup for specific encounter needs is really handy).
If necessity is the mother of invention, laziness must be the father.

I thought, never to need the T4 Helmet, but today I logged on to the TestRealms with a positive surprise. It actually looks like to be a neat tanking Item... and just yesterday we downed the Prince while I was in the raid with my Warlock... cuz we needed one more DD *whine*

There are 7 Epic helmets available to paladins pre SSC/Eye:

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32083 - Faceguard of Determination

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30731 - Faceguard of the Endless Watch
Shadowmoon Valley: Doomwalker
1227 Armor, 49 Sta, 30 DefR, 37 DodgeR, Sockets: Blue, Yellow, Yellow, +6 Sta.

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28593 - Eternium Greathelm
Karazhan: Opera Event
1187 Armor, 31 Str, 48 Sta, 34 DefR, Sockets: Red, Blue, Yellow, +4 DodgeR.
Warrior: 1.70%, Paladin: 1.70%, Paladin CB: 2.26%.

Let's assume we fill all sockets with the following Jewels:
Solid Star of Elune - +12 Sta (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24033).
Enduring Talasite - +6 Sta, +4 DefR (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24062).
Powerful Earthstorm Diamond - +18 Sta, -5% stun (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25896).

We would get (making 2 variations for some sockets):

Tankatronic Goggles (Enduring Talasite)
1296 Armor, 97 Sta, 42 DefR, 22 DodgeR, 13 HitR, -5% stun, visual stuff.
Avoidance: 3.26%, CB Prevention: 3.96%.

Faceguard of the Endless Watch (Solid Star of Elune)
1227 Armor, 85 Sta, 30 DefR, 37 DodgeR.
Avoidance: 3.45%, CB Prevention: 3.95%.

Eternium Greathelm (Solid Star of Elune)
1187 Armor, 84 Sta, 34 DefR, 31 Str.
Avoidance: 1.70%, CB Prevention: 2.26%.

Helm of the Stalward Defender (Solid Star of Elune)
1366 Armor, 83 Sta, 23 DefR, 23 ResR.
Avoidance: 1.15%, CB Prevention: 1.53%.

Faceguard of the Endless Watch (Enduring Talasite)
1227 Armor, 79 Sta, 38 DefR, 37 DodgeR.
Avoidance: 3.85%, CB Prevention: 4.49%.

Oathkeeper's Helm (Solid Star of Elune)
1080 Armor, 76 Sta, 15 DefR, 22 Int, 26 SpellD.
Avoidance: 0.75%, CB Prevention: 1.00%.

Justicar Faceguard (Solid Star of Elune)
1227 Armor, 73 Sta, 29 DefR, 24 DodgeR, 24 Int, 27 SpellD, -5% stun.
Avoidance: 2.71%, CB Prevention: 3.20%.

Faceguard of Determination (Solid Star of Elune)
1129 Armor, 72 Sta, 32 DefR, 24 DodgeR, 24 BlockR, -5% stun.
Avoidance: 2.86%, CB Prevention: 6.44%.

Justicar Faceguard (Enduring Talasite)
1227 Armor, 67 Sta, 33 DefR, 28 DodgeR, 24 Int, 27 SpellD, -5% stun.
Avoidance: 3.13%, CB Prevention: 3.68%.

Helm of the Stalward Defender has the most Armor and a lot of Stamina, but the avoidance is pitiful. Too much wasted itemization on Resilience. This is a PvE-PvP hybrid helm, and as such fails for pure PvE. Eternium Greathelm also has pitiful avoidance, while it's Str bonus does nothing for us. Might be a filler until you can get something better.

The Oathkeeper's Helm only has slightly more Stamina than the Justicar's Faceguard, but falls far behind on all other aspects. No reason to pick it.

If we remove those, and subtract 1129 Armor, 67 Sta, 29 DefR and 22 DodgeR from each of them, we get:

Tankatronic Goggles (Enduring Talasite)
167 Armor, 30 Sta, 13 DefR, 0 DodgeR, 13 HitR, -5% stun, visual stuff.
Avoidance: 0.65%, CB Prevention: 0.86%.

Faceguard of the Endless Watch (Solid Star of Elune)
98 Armor, 18 Sta, 1 DefR, 15 DodgeR.
Avoidance: 0.84%, CB Prevention: 0.86%.

Faceguard of the Endless Watch (Enduring Talasite)
98 Armor, 12 Sta, 9 DefR, 15 DodgeR.
Avoidance: 1.24%, CB Prevention: 1.39%.

Justicar Faceguard (Solid Star of Elune)
98 Armor, 6 Sta, 0 DefR, 2 DodgeR, 24 Int, 27 SpellD, -5% stun.
Avoidance: 0.10%, CB Prevention: 0.10%.

Faceguard of Determination (Solid Star of Elune)
0 Armor, 5 Sta, 3 DefR, 2 DodgeR, 24 BlockR, -5% stun.
Avoidance: 0.25%, CB Prevention: 3.34%.

Justicar Faceguard (Enduring Talasite)
98 Armor, 0 Sta, 4 DefR, 6 DodgeR, 24 Int, 27 SpellD, -5% stun.
Avoidance: 0.51%, CB Prevention: 0.58%.

Faceguard of the Endless Watch, equipped with Enduring Talasite give the best avoidance. Equipping it with Solid Star of Elune grants you 6 Sta at the loss of 0.40% avoidance (15 sta per 1% avoidance).

Going for the Tankatronic Goggles instead grants you 18 Sta at the loss of 0.59% avoidance (30.50 sta per 1% avoidance), as well as giving you 69 Armor, 13 Hit Rating, 5% Stun Resist and some visual gimmicks. (From the perspective of a Faceguard of the Endless Watch with Solid Star of Elune, it grants 12 Sta at the loss of 0.19% avoidance, 63.15 sta per 1% avoidance.) This is certainly worth it if you got Engineering.

Faceguard of Determination costs 7 Sta and 1% avoidance but you gain 2% CB Prevention. This might actually be worth it if it allows for some major upgrades elsewhere in your gear. It makes you lose 98 armor, but gives 5% stun resist.

The Justicar Faceguard gives 24 Int, 27 Spell Damage and 5% Stun Resist at the cost of 0.73% avoidance and 12 stamina. If you combine it with the Justicar Shoulderguards, then it gives you a nice threat set bonus. When you use the Justicar Faceguard, replacing Enduring Talasite with Solid Star of Elune grants 6 Sta for 0.41% avoidance (14.63 sta per 1% avoidance).
