A Couple of Newbish Questions...

Postby Goins2754 » Wed Jul 07, 2010 5:03 am

Greetings Benevolent Keepers of Wisdom,

I come to you this morning begging to your greatness. I humbly plea that you impart some wisdom upon this youngling of the gearing world. I have a few simple queries with which I kindly pray that you can aid me. All of these questions stem from an inexperienced player getting his hands on AtlasLoot & Wowhead. I wanted to make some gear wish lists in AtlasLoot and these questions popped up.

1) I've been told that http://www.wowhead.com/item=49904 is the BiS leggings for a protection paladin. However, Wowhead's stat weighting system suggests http://www.wowhead.com/item=51268 instead. Here is the comparison: http://www.wowhead.com/items=4?filter=s ... 8:7:6;gb=0. Can someone explain why there is a discrepancy, please?

2) I was making gear lists for pre-heroic & pre-raid & I'm being told that most of the armor that can be obtained for these categories is crafted by blacksmiths. How feasable, though, is it to obtain the following gear for pre-heroic & pre-raid content? *Edit* I've posted some median prices according to Wowecon.com. Clearly, it's idiocy to attempt to gain http://www.wowhead.com/item=49907 prior to raiding, but the others are well within the grasp of a determined tank. However, how rare are they? I don't want to wait months for one to pop up on the auction house.

http://www.wowhead.com/item=41387 - 495g
http://www.wowhead.com/item=47570 - 1800g
http://www.wowhead.com/item=49904 - No Data
http://www.wowhead.com/item=45551 - 1945g
http://www.wowhead.com/item=47591 - 3450g
http://www.wowhead.com/item=49907 - 9425g

Thanks so much for your time! I really hope it hasn't been too much of an inconvenience to aid a fledgling paladin tank whose only goal is to tank well.

On the legs, I have no chance of getting item level 277 stuff at the moment, so I have not looked into it in detail. I guess that people focus on effective health (stamina and armor) and so the pillars look good because of all the extra armour (with a rough conversion of 10 armor =1 stamina or thereabouts). The practical point for me is that the pillars are available to all (with cash) whereas the 277 stuff is reserved for those raiding heroic 25 mans.

On the affordability of the crafted gear, it all depends on your character's bank balance. I think most people levelling a character will be able to afford titansteel craftables, although given that you can get equivalent drops a skinflint could skip them.

All new tanks should aim towards the bracers and the chest, IMO, as they are fantastic for a new tank but it may take a while (I paid about 3k and 5k for them - prices have fallen since).

The legs and feet will take even longer but again primordial saronite prices on my server have halved in the few months I have been playing. Given that these items lack defence, you can also afford to wait as getting to uncrittable is a struggle early on. They are worth it though, as they are BiS or close to it.

I am ambivalent about the belt - it's not as high item level as the chest and bracers and if you don't get it, as it will probably be superceded by a frost one within a few weeks.

EDIT: Typically you do not buy craftables on the AH, but get the mats in trade and seek out a blacksmith. The belt, ironically, may be the harder to get made as fewer people run Ulduar than the others.

Of all the crafted gear there is only one piece you have to get. Bracers.

It's not because it's harder to get a drop, because the drop could come from Marrow 25, but it's because the lower level alternative is way, way, way below what you get.

Having said that I sincerely suggest you get them damn legs crafted as your second piece of crafted gear. They're BiS, especially for anyone looking at 'pre-raid' gear. Argumentally they're BiS for the tankadin farming LK 25 HM while bored to death, and those people are easily counted.

Wowhead doesn't exactly work "smartly" like that.
I believe that the ratio now is still about 10armor:1stam on melee-centric fights, so that extra 1000 armor really pays off alot more than you'd think. That's where the discrepancy will come from.

Alternatively you can easily get many of those pieces, but if you have the time, you can get almost everything from badges, and the rest from heroics/lower tier raids whilst doing so.
Things to remember: Don't just go to the AH and buy one, it'll most likely be way overpriced. Do one or two minutes of research, see what the mats are, and go get them and ask a guildie/friend/TradeChatRandom to make them.
Example: http://www.wowhead.com/item=47591
8x Eternal Life(@15-20g~ea) = 160g
2x Majestic Zircon(10k honor/100g~ each) = 200g
8x Crusader Orbs (No idea, they seem to go between 50-100g each now, so we'll say 75) = 600g
12x Titansteel Bars(~100g each) = 1200g
However, if you have a mining friend, or are a miner yourself you can get the mats for Titansteel bars and make them for probably around 50g a piece buying mats->smelting.

Yes, the saronite swordbreakers are nice but the wrathful PvP bracers are a possible substitute for people who don't mind grinding a bit of honour. The wrathful neck, cloak and bracers conveniently fill some of the gaps in decent emblem gear.

As far as your question goes on the pants.

Both high avoidance you would grab depending if you need hit or expertise
Pally tier:311 stam (all 30 stam gems)
Lost hope:329 stam (all 30 stam gems)

High armor piece
Pillars:297 stam (all 30 stam gems)

The Pillars are usually the best investment as you more then likely will be using them till cata. I only recently have been considering playing with other pants for "fun" my standard gear is listed in sig.
