[Mage] Hit Rating

Postby KysenMurrin » Sat Aug 01, 2009 5:50 am

As I've been working on my Mage, I keep running into a problem with Hit. My hit is continually low, and a lot of upgrades I've been seeing don't have any hit on them (or have less than my current gear), so I find myself reluctant to use.

I've been gemming for hit when I can, trying to keep it on gear, and still can't manage to reach the cap (13% w/ Precision).

Armory.

I have in my bags:
- Gown of Blaumeux (Better chest, but lowers my hit.)
- Rune of Infinite Power (Increases hit, but at maybe too high a cost.)
- Ring of Northern Tears (Increases my hit, but not sure if it's a downgrade or not.)

What I'm really wondering is whether I should go out of my way to take hit over other stats until I'm capped, or just wear the best I have and let it come naturally. How important is it to cap my hit?

hmm, I played a mage for 3 years and i can tell you that Hit is DEFINITELY THE MOST IMPORTANT STAT EVER (Caps Lock for cool).

doing a quick search on WoWhead, i came up with a very easily accessible belt for you.
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40696

Just do a search on WoWhead for cloth items (insert item spot) with hit rating > 1. for my search i did Ilevel 200-213 Just so that you know it's puggable.

Also, if you are that far below the hit-cap you should be gemming for ALL hit. no exceptions.

IIRC though the cap is 17% for casters.
1% from Draenei aura.
3% from spriest/boomchicken.
3% from precision.

You only need 10%. your armory shows you at 10.31%. maybe pick up 11% if you can't guarantee a draenei.

I can't rely on having a Moonkin of SPriest all the time, so I don't count that. Draenei is easier, but I don't always get one in group.

I was also under the impression that the spell hit cap had lowered to 16% in WotLK, same as the melee cap had dropped to 8%. Is that incorrect?

I will start saving up for the belt, thanks for pointing it out.

The spell hit cap is still 17%, the only thing that changed in WotLK is that you can completely negate misses, whereas in TBC you always had a 1% chance to miss regardless of how much hit you had.

yeah. the old hit-cap during TBC was 18%. but only 17% of it counted.
(to be less confusing, you had a 82% chance to miss base. you could make up 17% of that with gear but you'd always be at 99% no matter how much hit you had.)
this changed with WotLK and it was lowered to a 83% base miss chance but you could get to 100% with gear.

Probably the most complete explanation of hit rating needed:

http://www.wowwiki.com/Spell_hit#Hit_ra ... r_level_80

But in general, hit is #1 until capped

You could do what I did with my mage in the early goings of gear.

Go arcane. Seriously. You get 6% hit from talents. That means

talents + SP/oomkin + Goat = 10% hit.

Past that, Get the Sash of Guzbah. It's a great belt.
Get the 213 Valor Bracers. Wraps of the Astral Traveler or Combustion Bracers (FL10). Both are BoE, and you can generally find a pair of one or the other pretty cheap.
Run H:VH until you get a mark of the war prisoner.

I have it sitting in my bag on my mage in case I go raiding and don't have a SP/Boomkin.

What level are you raiding at? I know from experience that you will get tons of hit gear in Ulduar 25. I think im sitting at 425ish on my mage atm. I was raiding with 230ish before though and didnt notice much of a difference, granted i run with a SP and boomkin.

Raiding mainly Naxx 10 atm, will probably see some Ulduar 10 in future. Pretty exclusively 10-man except for OS.

Now, the patch went live with me at 28 Emblems of Heroism and 4 of Valor, and I'm not sure how to go. Is the heroism belt worth trading down emblems at all for the hit, or should I ignore it and go for the better gear from Conquest?

Seen the stuff from the new 5-man? And note that this is the normal-mode loot :)

Spell Hit - Waist - http://db.mmo-champion.com/i/47181/belt ... ing-blaze/
Spell Hit Wrist - http://db.mmo-champion.com/i/47173/bind ... he-wicked/
Spell Hit - Neck - http://db.mmo-champion.com/i/47219/bril ... ne-amulet/
Spell - Trinket - http://db.mmo-champion.com/i/47213/abyssal-rune/

The loot-table is just amazing for a 5-man. Chances are you can save your badges for tier-pieces.

I would say use those badges of Heroism for epic gems and start getting conquest badges for at least your 2 piece t 8.5. Like someone said before, doing the new 5 man normal that you can do over and over again is a good way to get some good hit gear as well.
