Ret [PvE] ideal rotation Patch 3.2?

Postby masterpoobaa » Wed Jul 15, 2009 10:41 pm

Ive been thinking about if there would be an ideal dps rotation for pve ret in the upcomming 3.2 patch.
Somehting similar to good ole 9696.

The cooldowns for 3.2 are:

Crusader strike (4 sec) - new, down from 6sec.
Judgement (8sec) - assuming 2/2 specced in imp judgements
Divine Storm (10sec)
Consecrate (10sec) - assume to be glyphed.
Exorcism (15sec) - sometimes intaneous if "thinggy" procs (yes ive forgotten what).

So taking the 2 highest priority attacks CS & Judge:
These work well together, and you can weave them together easily - 1 Judgement for 2 strikes.
Ditto with DS & Consecrate by themselves, with the same convient 10sec cooldown.

Get overlap issues though with the 8 second rotation of CS & Judgement with the 10 sec DS/cons rotation thou.

Best i can see is the following:

0.0 CS
1.5 Judge
3.0 DS
4.5 CS
6.0 Cons
7.5 Exo
9.0 CS
10.5 Judge
12.0 blank - everything on cooldown
13.5 CS
15.0 DS
16.5 Cons
18.0 DS
19.5 Judge
21.0 blank - everything on cooldown
22.5 DS
24.0 Exo
25.5 DS
27.0 CS
28.5 Judge
30.0 Cons
31.5 DS
33.0 blank - everything on cooldown
34.5 blank - everything on cooldown
36.0 DS
37.5 Judge
39.0 DS
40.5 CS
42.0 Cons
43.5 Exo

Anyone find anything better that doesnt have so many free cooldowns?

First Come First Serve, only use Exo when Art of War procs...nothing has changed, except this faux "decision" to be made about AoW, which isn't a decision anyway, since AoW is basically always going to be up, like it is now...

So yeah, Ret remains boring :/

How does the change to crusader strike effect the FCFS priority, though? Yes, it's DPS is good, but if every other thing you can hit Hits Harder, wouldn't one prioritize it lower?

It has essentially the same DPS when used on cooldown, so I would imagine it should still be prioritized. Couple that with the opportunity to add more crits to RV and keep it rolling and I really think CS remains our best strike.

Crusader Strike is still first priority even now. It's not the hardest hitting ability on a per hit basis, but is still one of the hardest hitting abilities on an over time basis.

Anyway using the standard priorities but starting off with an initial cast of Judgement gets you in a rotation of about equal length in the end, but less free cooldowns. I went into full detail over on EJ here: http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t64775-3_2_ ... ost1296133

This doesn't make it the best ability to use in priority, though.

I was getting the best results on PTR, once I had a 5-stack of Vengeance going, with DS > J > CS > Cons > Exo

I found that, on paper at least, I got best results still from following the current priorities (As these resulted in the lowest effective cooldowns on each of the highest DPS abilities). I haven't had time to actually try this though, as I lack time to actually play on the PTRs.

Thinking about it I might've forgotten to take into account the effect of SoV procs and such which would warp the results. And of course it was all assuming a "stand there and dps a single target" fight, which can have very differing priorities from an actual fight.

That's interesting. I would have assumed judgment with a 5-stack to be better before DS for conflict / mana reasons.
