[Ret-PvE] Enchant Boots: Icewalker vs. Greater Assault
Assuming you're below the hit cap and that Icewalker would not push you over, which enchant would you go for on your boots?
Enchant Boots: Icewalker - 12 crit rating, 12 hit rating
Enchant Boots: Greater Assault - 32 AP
Enchant Boots: Icewalker - 12 crit rating, 12 hit rating
Enchant Boots: Greater Assault - 32 AP

If I expected to replace them soon, i'd take icewalker for cheapness. For something I was gonna hold onto, I'd take greater assault. The retadin in my group is very much of the AP >all school of thought.
Be careful when you argue with trolls, lest you become one.

If you're below the hit cap, get hit rating. Even if it's only a little bit, it still gets you closer to the cap than none at all.
That and crit never hurt as well. I don't see 32AP as justification for having a slight miss chance.
Over cap, then whatever you need more (crit vs ap), IMO.

Pally's been relegated to AH duties.

It depends. At lower gear levels, AP wins out. As your gear level increases, icewalker gains power relative to 32 AP. At high enough gear levels, icwalker wins out. Last I checked via Redcape, I was at a point where it's pretty much a wash.

See, uke, months ago I would have agreed with you. But current state, I'm not sure that getting closer to the hit cap will do as much as you say.
Assuming we're below the hit cap and calculations will not push the paladin above the hit cap, does anyone have weightings or ratios that compare AP, crit rating, and hit rating to each other? For example, how much AP equals how much crit rating? I think if we can uncover that, we'll have our answer on Greater Assault vs Icewalker rather than using anecdotal musings.

I really need to just download Redcape's spreadsheet. They're that close that it varies with gear level?

I could be recalling incorrectly (I don't have the SS with me right now), but I believe that is correct.

It depends....if there's too much hit flying around on gear, the hit from icewalker will be all but useless and 32 AP will win out easily.

Huh? Hit is our second best threat stat until 8%...why would it be unexpected that the optimal gear set may hit 8% from gear alone in Ulduar?

I would hope that as iLvl of gear improves you'd have enough hit to lose things like 12hit to boot - 12 hit isn't much, you'd only need 4 rating on 3 of the pieces you're wearing to match that - if you're wearing 3 pieces that have some amount of hit on them, bump up their iLvl a bit, and presto, you're capped without needing an enchant.
Saying "icewalker will scale better with gear is kinda sketchy too - the value of 32 ap (35.2 ap with UR/TSA/AM actually) should scale up as your crit/hit/expertise/arp/haste from gear increases, just like the value of 12hit/crit will scale up as your AP/expertise/arp/haste from gear increases - if they're near even now, they'll be near even at points in the future too (unless one of them has a fixed cap, of which hit is the most likely to be reached - see rogues finally gearing for agi in sunwell because they finally hit capped for the first time in 3 years).
