But couldn't he lay the zone closer to the scion and in front of their path so the group could move to get them?

For the achievement in question here, the difficulty is not in surviving; it's damage output. Everyone has to stay in the spark pit, so AMZ doesn't increase your options for positioning - though it does shelter the raid from a bolt or two.

Sometimes people just drop dead in p2, and if you're going for the timer you just have to keep shooting and accept the attrition.
