Profession for Tanking?

Postby Nidal » Sat May 26, 2007 7:29 am

Hello all, glad to have found you! (Dorvan is my hero--thanks for introducing me to the wonders of Paladin AoE grinding and tanking and saving me from the drudgery of Holy!)

Anyway, I am a 52 Prot Pally and currently am a Miner/Jewelcrafter. Just started with the game shortly after the expansion and figured I'd go with the new stuff! :)

I've seen here a couple people mention the new Engineering helm which I looked up and it seems pretty pimp. So my question is, should I stick with Jewelcrafting? Or switch to Engineering? Or is there another profession which would be more conducive to my future tanking career?

I'm finally getting my Jewelcrafting to a decent level and I'd hate to dump it, but will if it turns out I'm wasting my time with it.

Thanks!

While others may disagree I maintain there is no one or two “key” tankadin professions. Any profession could suit your purposes. That said, there are a few professions with certain unique advantages to recommend them. Keep in mind that my knowledge of other professions is limited and please don’t hesitate to correct me or expand upon what I’ve said.

Money, Money, Money
We all want gold. Make no mistake, being a main or off tank is an expensive path to walk. Gems, chants, pots, food, and repairs do not come cheap. There is no thing wrong with taking the professions that will make the most gold as it will greatly enhance your tanking through secondary effects and supplements.

Jewlcrafting
Great money maker overall.
Saves you money on all the Solid Stars of Elune you’re going to need.

Mining / Herbalist / Skinning
Dependable money makers overall.
Supplies raw materials for your other professions

Armor
While most armor you'll be after comes from an instance, there are a few exceptional crafted pieces that various professions can give you access to. None of these pieces are mandatory for a paladin tank, but they can certainly help.

*Most of these are BOE, with the exception of the Red Havoc Boots

Engineering

*Most engineering items require Engineering to use

Buffs
Enhancing your tanking, one potion at a time.

Alchemy
Access to Flasks, Elixirs, and Potions
Questionable use post patch 2.1 when the raid environment can supply you with pots
Bonus money making with primal transmutes

Don't forget enchanting - ring enchants and the other enchanter only enchants add a serious bonus. Check out Lore's rings sometime. That extra spellpower just from ring enchants is enviable.

Yeah, I'll vouch for enchanting. It's nice having access to the ring enchants. And of course, it's a profession that will always be needed. No matter how good your Black Temple drops are, they can still be made better.

I went with Mining as my secondary skill to make money off of all the ore all the new jewelcrafters needed. So that's where I bring home the bacon.
