Troll lore and future expansion

Postby Amirya » Thu Apr 18, 2013 4:25 pm

Huh. I always thought that, while night elves and trolls shared a common ancestry, they weren't actually one descended from the other.

There seems to be a lot of disagreement. Some sources say the nelves are their own tree entirely, others say they're a branch on the troll tree, others say they were formed by the comingling of elunish beings and prototrolls.

wtb cannon clarification.

Sounds reasonable to me. I started out as a night elf (priest), and I remember really loving the lore and the night elf starting areas. The music, the quests, everything. :D And I quite enjoyed the updated troll starting areas, when that came around - at least some of the lore and atmosphere. Didn't quite care for the quests.

...oh and the taurens! ...and the forsaken! Actually, I think I really like all the Classic races' lore. I think I would've been a much larger lore geek had I actually played the game from release, and not come in later.

Have we seen a non-Curse of Flesh precursor to Elves or Trolls yet?

based on what i remember of the lore, proto-trolls were transformed into kaldorei (nelfs) through interaction with the well of eternity
and my personal theory is that the trolls were one of the earliest intelligent races

everything else has a titan-created progenitor, is an alien, or has ties to one of the animal spirits...or are a corrupted race

(talking just about playable races here)

Nope. It seems the Titans only created the Vrykul, Dwarves, Gnomes, Tol'Vir and Mogu. And only the Titan creations have been discussing being affected by the Curse.

As far as native sentient races are concerned, that leaves us with:
Elves (all strains) and possibly related Trolls
Proto-drakes
Aqir
Faceless Ones
the Ancients and Elune (Malorne & all)
Goblins
Tauren
Gnolls
Murlocs
Harpies
Kobolds
Pandaren (and possibly related, Furbolgs)
Pygmies
Quillboars
Ettin
Magnataurs
Tuskarr
Wolvar

JEEZ. That's actually quite a lot of them.
When that day comes, seek all the light and wonder of this world, and fight.

So where'd the humans come from? Dwarven mutation?

Oh, thought it was common knowledge, but some Vrykuls children devolved into humans. King Ymiron ordered them put to death, but some parents abandoned the children instead, who eventually became the Humans.
It is supposed that this is why Humans revere the silver hand, and knew of a Keeper's name (Tyr) before ever hearing the word "Uldaman" - it is part of their mythologival heritage.

Right. I actually did know that.
Clearly quitting WoW has made my brain mush, I should come back. :(

Yeah, I remembered the quest right away when culhag said Vrykul. Been too long. Was a good quest chain as well, I remember enjoying it quite a bit!

And yeah, that is one terrifying baby.

Don't tempt me, Frodo! Plan was to return for the next expansion, but I'm considering to drop by for a month or two this summer, just to level my characters and their professions, and get some reputation grinding out of the way. Y'know, stuff I'll have to do anyway. But playing at a casual pace really tears at my soul, and I don't have the time to commit to playing hardcore again... :(

Watch, next expansion will be a break in the trend:

Full troll expansion, with one token "non-troll" raid thrown in 75% through the expac.

Mark my words.
