Big city Japan problems: Was that a small earthquake or just a huge truck rumbling by?

:D SoCal here, so I hear ya...

Quick story.. back in college, was going to school in Montana. One other SoCal kid was in the class. One day a reasonable size quake hit, but not big enough to be a panic in SoCal. So the classroom starts shaking, everyone confused. The other SoCal kid looks at me, and in total deadpan, but loud enough for all to hear, "Hey Hal, that a quake?", I reply "Yep", and then the entire rest of the class panics and bolts out the door.. including the prof. Mind you, this school was all about Geological Sciences...

Hahaha, that's hilarious :lol
It's crazy how used you can get to things that would normally trigger your fight/flight response. So far the biggest quake I've experienced was fairly strong but didn't last very long, so by the time I had decided that "Okay this is above average", it was mostly over.

Maybe you can confirm this: Right at the start of a somewhat serious earthquake, there almost always seem to be kind of a loud bang, followed by the shaking back and forth? I've only had three strong ones in my one and a half year here so far, but as I recall, they all had a loud bang right at the start. The lesser ones just rumble.

Ask 5 seismologists, they'll tell you 5 different things about the earthquake booms or bangs.. :D The mechanics of if it's actually part of the quake, or some local effect of the quake on stuff, is unsure..

Earthquakes being waves, I imagined it might be the shock of the first wave knocking things loose and starting the shake. But I know nothing about this.

Supposedly something akin to sonic booms can happen, but it's never been measured.

That's a comic by Boulet. Original source:

(I recognised his art, though I've not read much of his stuff. Seen a few really great longform comics from him.)

Nice. Yeah the art style seemed fairly iconic. Kinda dark and gritty, but the use of light and colour just makes it extra beautiful (imo)!

I only watched it randomly as a kid, like whenever I was bored and it happened to be on. But it being a show about dinosaurs, I can kinda imagine how that'd end...

Earl accidentally triggers an Extinction Level Event by killing some bugs... the series ends with everyone freezing to death, I am not joking.

EVE has always fascinated me, but the idea that my entire achievements could be randomly destroyed overnight if someone decides that he's bored doesn't fancy me that much >_>
