I'm a big NFL fan, specifically of the Seattle Seahawks. I follow a message board to keep up with things because I live outside the US and don't get any TV coverage of NFL activities. The guys on this board are ridiculously macho. They feel threatened by pink uniform accents during Breast Cancer Awareness week and when Katy Perry's Roar was played as the Cincinnati Bengals took the field - it's a heavy-metal-only game as far as they are concerned. They also tend to be rather homophobic. The idea of an openly gay NFL player offends many.

If I was to characterize the general poster, it would be "young whitebread WWF-lovin heavy-metal homophobe".

So I laughed my ass off when someone posted a video of Marshawn Lynch's highlights with "The perfect soundtrack" which was a song by Judas Priest.

Music by a doe-eyed brunette with big tits is "gay" but music from the openly-gay man who introduced fetish gear to the heavy-metal scene is "perfect".

I had an amuse.

Yeah, the average NFL fan is a moron. I ran into messages about Jonathan Martin being weak and that he did not understand the Warrior's Code.

Blizzard's services were hit by severe lag midweek last week. Their ISP, XO Communications, posted on Facebook that the reason was the traffic demand of Apple releasing iOS7.1 increased usage enough to cause issues on their network.

The french name is possibly more horrible than the Italian one.

It's one of the axioms of the French language:

If it's original content in French, it'll sound awesome.
If it's a direct translation of an existing language, it'll be so bad it's horrible.
If it's a free-form version loosely (if at all) based on the existing language, it'll be so bad it's good.

The solution? Let the French team think up their own names and dialogues!
When that day comes, seek all the light and wonder of this world, and fight.

Actually, it's "Hokuto de cuisine". No, seriously. To say AB productions didn't give two fucks about their subbing is being kind to them. And don't get me started on the opening/ending themes.

EDIT: and just because I'm amused like that, if you want to insult the French, we up here in Belgium have a *much* better angle to strike - you know why they bury people face-down in France?

That was the absolute worst point in a terrifying history of french dubs that tried to pass off jewels of subtelty like City Hunter and Hokuto no Ken for kid's cartoons. For the record, the Simpsons were also marketed as such when they started popping up in French.

Not long after that announcement, Markus Persson (Notch, the guy that made Minecraft) cancelled the project to put Minecraft on the Oculus Rift.

Maybe they reckon you can be convinced to go buy a burger if the advertisement actually places you in a burger joint (for example).

From Notch's blog on the issue:

Of course, [Oculus] wanted Minecraft. I said that it doesn't really fit the platform, since it's very motion based, runs on java (that has a hard time delivering rock solid 90 fps, especially since the players build their own potentially hugely complex levels), and relies a lot on GUI. But perhaps it would be cool to do a slimmed down version of Minecraft for the Oculus. Something free, similar to the Minecraft PI Edition, perhaps? So I suggested that, and our people started talking to their people to see if something could be done.

And then, not two weeks later, Facebook buys them.

Facebook is not a company of grass-roots tech enthusiasts. Facebook is not a game tech company. Facebook has a history of caring about building user numbers, and nothing but building user numbers. People have made games for Facebook platforms before, and while it worked great for a while, they were stuck in a very unfortunate position when Facebook eventually changed the platform to better fit the social experience they were trying to build.

Don't get me wrong, VR is not bad for social. In fact, I think social could become one of the biggest applications of VR. Being able to sit in a virtual living room and see your friend's avatar? Business meetings? Virtual cinemas where you feel like you're actually watching the movie with your friend who is seven time zones away?

But I don't want to work with social, I want to work with games.

Fortunately, the rise of Oculus coincided with competitors emerging. None of them are perfect, but competition is a very good thing. If this means there will be more competition, and VR keeps getting better, I am going to be a very happy boy. I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook. Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven't historically been a stable platform. There's nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me.

And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.

I have the greatest respect for the talented engineers and developers at Oculus. It's been a long time since I met a more dedicated and talented group of people. I understand this is purely a business deal, and I'd like to congratulate both Facebook and the Oculus owners. But this is where we part ways.
