We live in a society where people born on third base constantly try to steal second, yet we expect people born with two strikes against them to hit a homerun on the first pitch.

So, as business online has picked up, I was able to hire an assistant. She's fresh out of high school, a graphic designer in training. She's.... interesting. I don't really understand her, as she is the type of girl in high school, I doubt I would have been friends with, based on personality.

Well, anyway, she got arrest for assault the other night, and had her day in court this morning. After hearing what she got, this is what I see happened in the court room

Image

10 days in jail
a fine
2 years probation
anger management counseling
restraining order

Needless to say, I don't think that she is going to be doing that again.

...I would suggest a revision of your interview technique if you want to avoid this in future. Start off with a question like, "When confronted with a disgruntled customer do you a) knee them in the balls, b) slap them in the throat or c) all of the above?"

I'm hoping that this is the wake up call that she desperately needs.

You are not in high school anymore. This is the real world, with real consequences.

The problem is, The jail she will be in, is in the city I live in, not this podunk village. So, they gave her work release, and the question becomes, how is she going to get to work.

I know that they are going to ask me, and I'm going to have to politely decline. I have been more than accommodating with the call offs to go skate boarding with her loser boyfriend, and calling off because she has a cold, and blah blah blah. I draw the line at being the chauffeur from jail.

I do like how this is in the amusements topic, seeing as your her employer... :p My employer would post it in the frustrations topic, and a good chance that it would be all in caps to

I'm completely amused. I even have a countdown on my dry erase board with a poorly drawn her behind bars. I've been trying to get her to understand that this isn't high school, this is real life all summer. Well, now she will have 10 days in the slammer to think about how shitty it is to behave like a spoiled brat as an adult.

Can you not just fire someone who's been sent to jail? I mean come on now.

I can fire anyone for anything. Ohio is pretty lax on that kind of thing. I don't really have to give a reason. The problem is, while I'm her "supervisor" and "she works for me", it's not really my call, for a couple of reasons.

1.) I'm not technically part of management.
2.) Her Grandfather has been employed here for..... uh.... well.... I'm pretty sure he came with the building when we bought it 27 years ago, and that would just be messy.
3.) My boss is her "real boss"
4.) when she is here, she does her job as well as can be expected for an 18 year old.
5.) If we fired convicts, we would lose a large majority of our staff.

What? She didn't say that.

If this person's absence is going to negatively affect the flow of the company, then I would also support terminating her employment. I look at it as nothing more than a bunch of unexcused absences.

Nikka painted with a pretty damn big brush. That sound like "OMG, she's in jail, fire her".

While it may be allowable to do so in certain states, here in CA, a 10-day unexcused leave, at least from a larger company, might be have to be allowed, unless there were other issues (performance, safety, etc.).

Sounds like Shoju's got a pretty reasonable grasp on this, especially considering the rest of the workforce.

But Halabar, near as I can tell, Nika did suggest firing her for being in jail.

Her own stupidity has landed her in jail for longer than a weekend.

There was nothing I could discern that said to also ensure she was never employable ever again.

If I had just hired this chickadee, and she did that, you can be sure her employment would be terminated with me (if not in severe jeopardy). It would have to be really really really really really really extenuating circumstances.

I mean, she was just hired. I doubt Shoju has the time (or desire) to deal with her shenanigans when she's supposed to be training and/or assisting him.

I've my own share of experience of firing staff under my ever regretful belt so I am not unfamiliar with the process, both in the US and UK and I have to say that I would not fire this young lady in this instance. If it had been an assault on company property or against a colleague she would be gone in an instant, but given her age and the fact that she is facing a custodial sentence, however short, I think she has enough on her plate without throwing her onto the long, long list of unemployed former convicts.

Unpaid leave and a written warning.

Well, this is hardly the only problem that we've had. There are a host of problems, but I'm coming at it from the stance of "I was young and dumb once too".

She also will have work release while in jail, just... someone other than me will be handling her transport. I refuse. It's not much of a consequence if your boss who lives 5 mins away from jail comes to pick you up, and take you home.

I'm looking for a wake up call. I'm hoping that her grandfather is the one who has to get her and take her back. That would require him to realize she isn't perfect, and he'll make her pay for the ride. That's 18 ish miles one way for him.

This is no one's dream job. Even mine, and I'd say that on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate my current employment a 6.5 - 7, if I factored in all the pros and cons.
But, we have a mechanic who has had lots of run ins with the law, a guy who has had several, including a rather large one that landed him in a State Pen for ~8 years.

On the Batman thing? I've completely lost interest in seeing the movie now, and I'm a Batman fanboy. I'm not frothing at the mouth about it, but Affleck just isn't the kind of actor that makes a good Bruce Wayne, or a good Batman. I had an outside hope that Wentworth Miller, or some other "up and coming" type would get the role.

For me, Affleck is on the list of people I would have rattled off that I wouldn't want to see as the dark knight

In my work the outsourced guy 2 seats to the right, was invited to a permanent spot... During the last interview when requested to deliver the criminal record sheet, he replied "No issue, only had 2months without driving due to a Drunk driving conviction".

Next call he received was a : "We don't think your profile is the kind we look for our institution"

Funny part? The drunk driving doesn't show up on the criminal record.
An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded.

I like that a lot. See - if you fired her you couldn't have that kind of conversation and you'd be back to arguing about the evil of Flex raids.

There are days when I think she is a smart kid.... with the proper motivation would be a great candidate to take over this position when I finish up my next degree, and there are other times.....

I question the thought process.

And the only evil in flex raids is that they don't share a lockout with other things. Otherwise? A HUGE step in the right direction.
