Re: All about sports
I have some loose definitions of things.
Sports are rule based competitions where the outcome is decided by those participating.
Non-sports are more interpretation based competitions where the outcome is decided by a group of judges.
For example a sport would be hockey and a non-sport would be figure skating.
So to counter bldavis Chess would be a sporting event under my system.

We live in a society where people born on third base constantly try to steal second, yet we expect people born with two strikes against them to hit a homerun on the first pitch.

One could argue that the outcome of several sporting events hinges greatly on the decisions of "judges"

So... a large portion of the Olympics would be non-sports.

They would be wrong. Your teams in ability to field a competitive team that can convert on third and 1 at the opponents 12 yard line is more of a factor.

counter how?
if 2 pro chess players go at it, than yes chess can be a sporting event
anything you train hard for and can compete in, and using flex's definition, have the outcome determined by you and your decisions is a sporting event
the sad thing is though alot of time, it seems that even mainstream sports are in the hands of "judges" in the form of referees
case in point, last week during our football game, opposing receiver catches a pass, turns and takes 4 steps, looses control of the ball, our defender scoops it up and is running to the endzone, 15+ yds from anyone and the play is whistled dead.
the call was incomplete pass and for some reason, we couldnt challenge it.
so iow, we got screwed out of a touchdown in a game we lost by just 11 points
oh and combine that with one of our guys having to be taken out on a stretcher after a late hit in the endzone sent him to the wall...which nothing was called on

There is more than just 3rd and 1 calls that are wrong. I think football does a good job of it, while I think baseball needs to get with the times. Players are faster, stronger, and more agile than they have ever been, leading to far more close calls at the bags / plate that have just been dreadfully wrong (I'm looking at you Atlanta VS Pittsburgh extra inning debacle)

Just like missing white women, there aren't more, just more press!

I disagree, even in football with the use of instant replay, they have admitted that the speed of the game has increased, and the number of calls that could be questioned has increased by about 21% over the past 10 years.
Not more press. Just the way it is as the human body is further refined, and atheletes are less barrel chested drinkers and more specimens created in a lab

Re: All about sports
I like baseball, love football and will watch almost anything else but NASCAR.
I'm a longtime Patriots and Chiefs fan (so imagine how much I loved the idea of Pioli coming to town!) and a diehard Kansas City Royals fan. Even our local soccer team is getting good (we're in the playoffs!) for MLS. We have no hockey team, but I would love one and we have no basketball team (OKC Thunder is the closest one).
- Mike and Mike are overrated.
- Colin Cowherd is a blowhard.
- Jason Smith was the bomb on overnight stuff.
- I really like what they're doing with NFL 32 and the whole hour of NFL Live each day on ESPN.
- NFL Network and specifically RedZone are just what I wanted in cable stations.
- I'd listen to J.T. the Brick on Fox overnights, but I just have a hard time supporting anything related to Fox Networks.
- The NBA is stupid for making this lockout last so long. Both players and owners are pissing people off day after day in this economy that they're going to argue themselves out of sports relevance here pretty soon.
I'd love to find out what the rest of everyone likes about sports.

Anyone else have a bad habit of always cheering for the loser in major sporting events? Besides supporting the Patriots and having them win, just about every other sports team I've ever cheered for during playoffs of any kind seems to lose.

Awesome.. the Rangers are in the World Series again. How rivetting. The only matchup less interesting than them and the Giants last year will be St Louis who will find a way to win because I hate Tony LaRussa.
