Took me forever to reply as I was still going through older stuff, anyway...

As far as I remember Lemmy started playing guitar and only later, because they needed a bassist, switched over, pretty much he started playing the bass the only way he knew already, with a pick.

Personally I don't mind, it works, I'm actually amused by the hate for it, what's to hate in doing it? If it makes music and the music is good, as far as I'm concerned you can do it while you bang your bass on the wall.

Because it sounds like a detuned guitar instead of a bass. The range of tonality that you can achieve from a pick is vastly smaller than the ranges that you can achieve by using the flesh of your fingers and palm, up to, and even including the sound of using a pick on the strings.

There in, is the rub. I like music where I can

1.) Hear the bass, loud when it needs to be, in the back when it doesn't need to be, but heard, as a distinct part of the mix.
2.) I like bass that I can feel. And when I say feel, I'm not talking when pumped through 4x15's sitting in the back of someone's jacked up ride. I'm talking about in a good mix, in headphones, I want to hear the sound of the bass, and I want it to sound full. When using a pick, the sound isn't as full, and can sometimes end up buried in the mix.
3.) I hated motorhead before I knew Lemmy was supposed to be some badass, and that he was a bass player. To me, they are not good music.

Another finger only player, and probably my favorite bassist from Grunge/Alternative music. (Robert Deleo, STP)

The springboards have surprisingly little to do with the lift you get on a jump. They give you just enough to reach the top of the vault apparatus, then the rest is because when you hit the vault just right it transfers your forward momentum to upward momentum. It's like if you're on a bicycle and your front wheel falls off. When you plant the fork, you're going to do a front flip or two (depending on how fast you're going).

Anyway, modern gymnastics put way too much accent on difficulty and power rather then artistic performance, posture and dynamic in my opinion. I understand why this is done, because the latter are relative and judges can make mistakes, rising controversy, while the former is kind of set in stone, but to be honest gymnastics competitions aren't the same anymore because of this and it's a shame.

I agree. I lost interest in actively hunting down gymnastics when the olympics was on when they stopped giving scores for artistic performance, and the new scoring system just boggles my mind. It's easier to understand "perfect 10!" than it is "ok, so they have a start value that's based on degree of difficulty and then they take away points from that to account for mistakes..."

If your scoring system takes 15 minutes to explain, you're Doin It Wrong™.

On the other hand, if I did a standing quadruple flip with three and a half twists and wobble a bit on the landing, I'd be pissed as hell to lose to a perfectly executed cartwheel.
