If cake mix is mixed, then placed in pastry, then sealed in pastry.
Then cooked...
Is it a pie?
Is it a cake?
Or is it an abomination that must be destroyed!

I'd eat it.

Favorite pie banana cream hands down. Though every once in a while I get a craving for cake especially chocolate... then I realize its just a craving for french silk pie.
I think the final product wrapped in pastry makes it pie.

I feel cake has a empathy with pre 2.0 paladin tanking?
incorrect, pre 2.0 was more like making little mini popsicles by pouring kool-aid into an ice cube tray.

But cake is unmistakably cake no matter what it's covered in.
That initial rush of sweet flavour from the first bite, down to the savoury aftertaste that lingers as the fluffy powdery goodness melts in your mouth cannot be anything other then cake.
I need a moment to raid the cupboard now.

I'll be honest, I think it's completely situational. It depends on what you have before the dessert. I tend to stick to the general themes.
Heavy meat, such as steak, usually goes well with cake.
Most poultry, like chicken, turkey, duck, is usually better with pie.
Fish, and ham can both flip flop, depending on how they are cooked.
All this being said, Rhubarb pie is my most favorite food in the entire universe.
