If cake mix is mixed, then placed in pastry, then sealed in pastry.

Then cooked...

Is it a pie?

Is it a cake?

Or is it an abomination that must be destroyed! :o

Favorite pie banana cream hands down. Though every once in a while I get a craving for cake especially chocolate... then I realize its just a craving for french silk pie.

then placed in pastry, then sealed in pastry.

Then cooked...
Clarissa

I think the final product wrapped in pastry makes it pie.

incorrect, pre 2.0 was more like making little mini popsicles by pouring kool-aid into an ice cube tray.

But cake is unmistakably cake no matter what it's covered in.

That initial rush of sweet flavour from the first bite, down to the savoury aftertaste that lingers as the fluffy powdery goodness melts in your mouth cannot be anything other then cake.

I need a moment to raid the cupboard now.

I'll be honest, I think it's completely situational. It depends on what you have before the dessert. I tend to stick to the general themes.

Heavy meat, such as steak, usually goes well with cake.

Most poultry, like chicken, turkey, duck, is usually better with pie.

Fish, and ham can both flip flop, depending on how they are cooked.

All this being said, Rhubarb pie is my most favorite food in the entire universe.

Does pie scale with gear? I guess yes, but I need the numbers to prove it.

It's just not a fair comparison. I mean, you can put cake and muffins up against each other, but poor cake is vastly outclassed here.
Why?

Pies can be sweet, fruity, creamy, nutty, cheesy... all things cakes can be as well... BUT

Pies can be savory, salty, meaty...
Pies are portable, practical... served warm, or cold... as an appetizer, ain course, and dessert...
I've made everything from pecan pies to coconut cream pies to apple pies to pizza pies to egg and chard pies to beef pot pies and back...
A casserole is merely a pie with forgotten crust.

The pie is a paradigm. Cake is merely a type of pastry.

Don't get me wrong, cakes are great when done well. They are a rather substantial domain as well: everything from cheesecake to coffee cake (a quick bead... really more of a giant muffin, but I'll allow it this time) to coconut cream cake. But you will never sell me a beefcake or an onion and pea cake!

I'll bet I can come up with a great recipe for a cake pie! Bwahahahaha
