Off-topic, but:
Rape and sodomy.

When was the last time you heard of consenting adults being charged with Sodomy?

Considering state sodomy laws were found unconstitutional between consenting adults in private hopefully never.

Which is completely different than what was asked, but you know that.

Comment rather unrelated to the rest of the thread:

Brekkie, your story is a touching one, and I commend and thank you for your service.

It doesn't change the fact that for the last 4 years, and what I will assume is much of your adult life, you have been surrounded by US Marines as your peers. If you leave the service and join the private sector, you will find that the only thing that you can count on people for is letting you down. There is a great deal of injustice in this country, and prejudice against gay people is openly tolerated by society. If your life experience has truly been as you describe it in this regard, I am envious of you, perhaps there is hope for your generation. I think more likely it is naivete, or the fact that you just aren't affected by it.

Meh, I'm nothing special.

Here's a question: Do any of the homosexual forum posters here have any Personal experiences with the kind of discrimination and injustice you guys are talking about being rampant? I'd be interested to hear the details if anyone is willing to share.

Seeing as how I haven't come out publicly, only to a select few friends and family... no... I haven't had personal experience... on the other hand, there was one openly gay guy in high school, and he was constantly ridiculed. Don't know that any of it became violent, but then there weren't many fights in my high school as a whole.

Shitty childhoods aren't dependent on gender identity or sexual preference.

As far as adoption is concerned, adopt outside the country. There are a ton of American children awaiting adoption, but we're fucking anal about our adoption regulations, and there's a high percentage of willing adopters that can't adopt because they've been turned down for one reason or another. Just a small sampling of shit that gets you turned down for adoption in the US:

Criminal background including misdemeanors (yes, even unpaid parking tickets or bounced checks)
Low credit rating (< 600)
Bankruptcy
Debt to credit ratio > 80%
Health issues (including, but not limited to, simply being overweight)
Marital status (single people can't adopt, neither can widowers or divorced people even if they're currently remarried)
Smoking
Prescription and/or non-prescription drug use (are you on antidepressants? Congratulations, you can't adopt a kid, even if they're prescribed for an off-label reason e.g. trazodone as a sleep aid)
Housing situation (if you aren't living in what's considered a "good" neighborhood, good luck adopting)
Etc, etc... The list goes on and on.

As for housing, it's illegal to discriminate based on sexual preference under the Fair Housing Act.

As far as employment is concerned, why are you bringing your sexual preference into the workplace to begin with? And if you're fired for sexual orientation, you have rights. Sue for wrongful termination and take it as far as you can - that's how the laws were changed in 20 states (plus DC).

Gay people (and many other minority groups!) like to scream about "prejudice" and "harrassment" and claim some sort of martyr status. Oddly enough, the people who scream the loudest are generally those that are doing the absolute least to fix any of their perceived issues. If you're saying that there's some sort of "injustice" in the issue, then you're 100% wrong. As long as there is legal recourse to rectify your situation, there is no injustice. It would be injustice if there were no reasonable way of resolving your situation.

Basically, if you don't like something, then instead of bitching about it, do something to change it.

I haven't had any negative experiences in terms of discrimination or injustice in either the work place or my personal life. But I'm also female and bi, and as such, I don't experience the same type of discrimination that "pure" gay people may encounter. That being said, I've never been shy to tell co-workers my sexuality and it's never been met with any type of adverse reaction. Of course, having married a man, I usually get painted with the straight brush now anyway.

I also don't recall anyone getting mocked or abused in high school for being gay. (Not to say it didn't happen, but I don't remember it.)

I realize this is in the Asylum and therefore the rules are a bit more lax, but keep in mind there are still limits. I know that many of you are long timer posters and likely have some degree of mutual respect for each other, so keep that in mind as you post. This is obviously a subject where emotions can run high, don't let them get the best of you.

And in situations like this, remember the 5% rule...Roughly 5% of the US believes that the moon landing was faked. In other words, given a large enough sample, there are plenty of morons/bigots/asshats etc to be found on each side of an argument. Try to resist framing the opinions of those you disagree with as the same as those 5%. In most cases, you are both ignorantly missing the point of the person you are debating with and underestimating them at the same time.

In the words of my grandfather, when some kid in my school openly confessed he was gay at a school thing (I don't remember what it was, I think a senior class project.)

My little attempt at a story didn't just come out of nowhere, you know. Like Nika I'm bi, so I was able to blend in and avoid some of the high school harassment (not all if it though. I had my share of taunts and intimidation). Doesn't mean I didn't see other people, some of them acquaintances of mine, get roughed up for being openly different. Typical high school boisterousness, I'm sure some would call it; black eyes, trippings, you know. What most parents disregard as "just boys being boys". I only recall those doing the harassing getting into trouble for it a handful of times. For the record, I grew up outside of New York, in the suburbs.

It takes a lot of courage to stand up and be yourself, especially in a hostile environment. I'm certainly glad some of you have found that courage, but implying that others are simply weak because they cannot follow your example is, in my small opinion, somewhat shortsighted. My only purpose in making this thread was to acknowledge and support those trying to find their feet.

This says otherwise. 12 states and a handful of major cities is not the entire country. There is no federal law against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the United States.

You keep assuming my point on this matter is "Wahhhh I'm not allowed to be an obnoxious queen in the workplace". It isn't, and for the life of me I can't understand how you're making the leap from "I'd like to not lose my job because I happen to be gay in my spare time" to "I'd like to be able to be an obnoxious queen in the workplace and get away with it because I deserve special rights". I can guarantee you they're very different things.

Fivelives wrote:Basically, if you don't like something, then instead of bitching about it, do something to change it.
What makes you think I don't do just that in my real life? Just because I take offense to someone saying that LGBT people have the same civil rights and protection as everyone else when it's clearly a falsehood?

Again, I'm not sure how you can think that just because other places have it worse that it's okay to not strive to improve life for people in your own countries. I'm also not sure how you manage to convince yourself that a sizeable portion of the population being virtually lesser citizens is okay. It's almost like you think that improving life for people at home and improving it for overseas are mutually exclusive; somehow if life improves for a minority group in your own country someone somewhere else in the world is going to be worse off. It's quite foreign to me.
