So why aren't the police there allowed to use tear gas and water cannons? That might quench things a little. We got sent home early yesterday (London), but in partial answer to some questions above: the media & government keep trotting out the 'policing by consent' line in response to calls for water cannons etc….

The Met in London though rolled out an extra 10k members on the streets last night and were issued and ordered to make use of baton rounds *if necessary but to avoid it at all costs if possible* - I know this as I work for the police watchdog that's also prominent in the news atm. The official line from the cops (both to us the watchdog & the press) is that they are worried about instigating and 'arms race' if they start resorting to use of 'para-military policing' strategies. Honestly I'm not sure how long that will hold up if the populace continue to be held to ransom by a bunch of mostly teenagers.
Either way London was quiet last night and it's just as well - they really don't want to face the Met at full force.
I also thought the GMP did a decent job reacting to the riots last night given what was going on tbh.

The video of the injured kid being mugged, killed a small part of me inside, & contributed to yet another personal loss of faith in mankind as a whole. That was just dark & evul.
