The Witcher 2, holy crap

Postby Brutalicus » Thu May 19, 2011 11:38 pm

I'm really surprised I haven't seen any threads or posts about The Witcher 2 around here! Anybody else checking out this amazing game? I just finished it (I'm sure I'll play through it again), and it really seems to be the most ambitious game I've ever played. It has its flaws, but goddamn. The first game bored me to tears and it lost me somewhere in Act 3, but the second game hooked me in with its bizarre and arousing combination of Dragon Age, Crysis, and Oblivion. I've been playing it all damn week. I'd say anyone who loves a good story (and, cough, has a ridiculous gaming PC) owes it to themselves to check it out. At the very least Bioware will be feeling the pressure to make their RPGs even more engrossing than they are now.

If anyone else is playing it, or has beaten it, I'd love to get some discussion going and figure out what the fuck would have happened if I took a different path through the game. There are so many choices that are genuinely hard to make... but the most amazing thing is the game never makes you regret doing something. There are no shitty choices, nor are there any perfect/obvious ones.

I'm more intrested in the RED engine than the actual game, and their claim of "releasing it for any developer to create their game, or any individual a story in witcher"

I had a similar experience with the first one, got to chapter 3 and the game totally lost me, I tried to get back into it a few times but never managed to and that put me off trying Witcher 2, I might give it a go now that you've posted such a glowing review of it though.

That's just how I felt Sahiel, but after this review and the fact that we are doing some intense game research I decided to buy it, am quite excited to start now.

Brutalicus should get some Atari commissions for his review has led to a few people buying the game lol.

Naw I don't mean to do that, I just had a great time playing the game despite hating the first one.

It has its share of flaws, sure. My biggest gripe is that the difficulty curve is backwards. Combat in the prologue and chapter 1 is unforgiving and (in my opinion) even unfair at times, then after that you get more and more tools and the enemies never catch up. Also the inventory system could use some tweaking; you can't see how many bombs/daggers/traps you have unless you unequip them, and there's lots of wasted space and no way to organize your mounds of loot.

If you guys are buying it, I hope you enjoy it. You can tell the guys making it love their jobs.

Bloody hell! I'm not exactly a stranger to rpgs, i'm playing on normal and... damn, these guys kick ass. I must have died and had to reload 5 or 6 times in the prologue, the inital combat is vicious and not at all forgiving, the toughest one I found was the fight before you can open the monastery gates, 3 soliders, a knight, a knight in full fucking plate and a dude with a huge ass shield... all at once, fuck me.

I like a challenge but damn, half my friends who like rpgs would have said sod it after dying half a dozen times in 15 minutes, you're spot on about the difficulty curve being the wrong way around. Ease them in, then start challenging them, don't send merciless kill squads after people when they're learning the keys in the damn prologue!

Haha, that PA is so spot-on. I died at least ten or fifteen times on the first fight in the goddamn game.

I bought the first one, but I don't think I ever got past the halfway point (or even earlier!) in the very first chapter. I got to the swamp city and sort of lost interest in the game - I blame other games coming along. I think the one that distracted me from The Witcher was Dawn of War.

I might pick up this one though - it's been getting some really rave reviews. I have a feeling I'll have to build a new computer just to play it though! If it's as processor/graphics intense as the first one, I might not have the sheer nerd-muscle to get it to run anywhere approaching smoothly.

Yep, the PA comic is 100% right. Specially that last comment, so many times a brief 'help' screen flashes up, you die horribly and only then get told a chance to see what you should have done, as stopping fighting to read stuff tends to get you killed regardless. The 'tips' and info on basic, required stuff is incredibly poorly implemented, that said, loving the game so far and really really liking Triss, so much so that her plea to 'leave it all behind' actually worked on me despite me as a player initially wanting to do the opposite, brilliant, if flawed, game so far!

Huh, might have to give it a try, was expecting I'd be missing out too much if I hadn't played the first one, which I wasn't going to bother to do.

I'm slow at RPGs though, still poking around ME2 (only started playing it a couple of months ago, but that's still enough time for most of my friends to have played it twice I think), still only maybe 20% into FFX which I started years ago, only half through FFIX which is even older, etc...).

Your complaints about the combat curve remind me of Darksiders. I *LOVED* the combat in that game (and the puzzles and graphics and everything else were pretty sweet too), but the flaw was that the first few boss fights were actually hard since you had just the basic weapons, basic attacks, and most of all very little health, so losing half a bar early in a fight while you figure it out would be fatal. But as the game progresses you pick up more abilties and enchants and more health, and by the time you complete the super badass ultimate armor set and sword, there's only the final boss left to fight. And you have such massive amounts of health that even screwing up the boss barely puts a dent in your HP, so the one fight in the game you get to use the baddass armor in becomes a pretty easy one.

you guys died before the bit where you have to find the secret passage-way into the temple (after the thing with the dragon torching the bridge)? Keep the character facing the enemies, use the roll move to gain some distance and hit someone else, I got to that point just by using the two normal attacks.

on that note, where the hell is this passageway? spent about an hour looking in every bloody house and looting everything that was lying on the ground to no avail. The book that came with the CE says there is a guy you can loot with a key, but there isn't, it says there is a door you go through to get to a fountain, except there isn't...

This is one of the places where you can use... Aard? (I think that's the one) to break down a wooden wall which opens a new area to explore and the hidden passage.

If you want the precise location.... minor spolier :)

At the bottom of the stairs down from the gate there is a soldier sitting on the floor, to your right as you come down the steps, next to him is a small alley that ends in a shoddy wooden fence. Blow it up with Aard and it reveals an area behind it with a well, go down the well to enter the secret passage into the Monastery. Ta da!

thanks, when I went back to it, the gate had despawned.

It's a pretty awesome game, next time I play I'll turn up some of the graphics options (which you can only change out of game, which sucks).

I havea dual core with 2x3.0 GHz, 2 GB ram, and a geforce 9800 GTX+, which settings can I turn up without the game dipping low on FPS?

Bought it, played it, finished it on Insane. Fucking loved it.

This the only that has ever brought any real challenge in Single Player save for RTS games. It's awesome.

As for the difficulty being backwards...I would beg to differ :P I suppose it is on normal, but on Hard/Insane Hell NO.

Even did a full Let's Play on Youtube on Insane difficulty. Let's Play The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings [Insane][Blind]
