Osama Bin Laden is dead.

Postby Arnock » Sun May 01, 2011 10:18 pm

So apparently Osama died in an attack earlier today.

It's about time.

Excellent. Hope this doesn't just make him a martyr, though.

I don't see why people are so happy and celebratory about this. All it's done is martyred him.

hey,

so "justice is served" by killing him... is this the only way there is to solve this? Does this type of behavior really bring peace (to the US and to the people in pakistan / afgahnistan / ...)?

Levatine wrote:All it's done is martyred him.

This, killing the head of a hydra will ALWAYS do good, right? Right?
It's a vicious cycle of gore and brutality that will never end, if no one starts to put their ego aside and starts thinking with their heads. But thats way above the masses (in all countries I must assume).

Obama will be applauded for this kill and everyone forgets the pressing problems at home... diversion at its best. And it works far too well to abandon it.
Here in germany there is an ongoing argument about child-pornography and how to deal with it. Don't get me wrong, child-pornography is really bad and needs to be stopped but the media and politics blow it way up. Why? Because this diversion let them do other things which they could otherwise never do (like censorship of the internet or "Vorratsdatenspeicherung" - saving ALL connection data for at least 6 months).

I'm so tired of politics ... -.-

In a rational world? Yes, "cutting the head off a snake" will work fine. Unfortunately, we aren't dealing with rational people - we're dealing with religious fanatics who have hated us for generations. I highly doubt they'll roll over and say "oh look, we've been beaten. Ok, time to go forge our swords back into plowshares", but instead all we've done is piss them off.

And yeah, it's an excellent distraction. Sadly, I have a feeling this means Obama will be getting a second term and more time to fuck up what he hasn't already.

The guy was an enemy of America, and justice in general in my opinion, so I'm glad he's dead and gone. But people gathering in the streets and chanting and shit? That's just crass. It's probably the exact same thing the terrorists did after 9/11. I'm pretty disappointed in the people who act like it's the Fourth of July or something, even if it is a hard-fought victory for U.S. intelligence.

Good timing. The arabian world has something better to do, than complain that Bin Laden is dead, they are trying to get rid of their own bag of dictators. Wonder if the US government actually waited for a time of opportunity and of course it´s good for reelection.

As a strike against Al Kaida it accomplished probably nothing. I don´t think Bin Laden was actually in charge of Al Kaida operations currently. He was in hiding and dependant on messengers with no modern communications and seems Al Kaida is orperating in independant cell like structures anyways.

Well Al Kaida will probably increase their operations against the US to avenge the death of their figurehead and after a time, it will slow down. Perhaps it will even help to ferret them out. In their fervor to make an appropriate response, they will hasten some stuff and perhaps make mistakes in the process, Intelligence agencies could exploit.

Al Kaida will probably try to gather more sympathisants in their home countries but well most arabian people are occupied with Syria, Lybia etc or reorganizing and reforming their country after their dictators stepped down/were chased from office.

Perhaps some people are actually happy that he is gone, hoping that the US-Middle East relations will normalize, after the US government got their trophy.

Well the US probably had to kill him after they initiated such a big manhunt. Dropping the issue after committing big resources to it, would probably look very silly and weak.

Oh and the talk about child pornography in Germany. Yeah it were the evil pedophiles lurking in the net, then the terrorists to justify internet censorship and well get some freebie points for the next reelection. Seems our politicians fear the new media and intelligence agencies really love to tap everything. I am not sure if they actually want to curb our freedoms or it´s just some old men not understanding the new world and overreating in fear. "Don´t know it, must be an evil thing."
I think politicians trying to restrict freedom of speech and trying to survey everything their citizens do is a bigger threat than some terrorists. The tough, strong man leading the country today is tomorrow´s dictator.

I'm as big of an Obama critic as there is, but I'm skeptical that this was done as part of a re-election bid. It's unlikely that Obama, or whoever won in 08, would lose in 2012 just because of the state of things domestically. While people are pleased that Bin Laden was brought to justice, I doubt this has anywhere near enough legs to carry an election that's more than a year away.

I'd agree that the celebrations are a bit much though, it seems a bit distasteful to me.

I wonder how long it'll be before we start seeing re-election ads for Obama that say something like "Bush started it, Obama finished it. Obama 2012"

The "Zugangserschwerungsgesetz" (Law to hinder the access to child pornography) was made by politicians which openly admitted to "print out the internet" and ignoring most of their advicers / experts who stated that simply blocking web site would not stop child pornography, because 5% (don't know the exact digit) of all pornography is distributed over the web. Yet now they can block any website they want. Oh and all Anti-Child-Porn-Organization said "screw blocking, deleting is much more efficient", but hey... why rely on experts when I'm in charge and are afraid of any internet what-so-ever!!

Brutalicus wrote:The guy was an enemy of America, and justice in general in my opinion, so I'm glad he's dead and gone.

Obama said that Bradley Mannig is a enemy of the united states too (and he said he is guilty before even the trial began!), should he be executed too ? Should all prisoners of guantanamo bay just be executed and call it a day ?

This wouldn't lead to peace... we would just have another cold war with all their families / nationalities / religions / organizations...
