Re: Acquired Tastes
How does tongue taste?
I've never had it but from what I hear, it tastes basically like any normal cut of roast beef. Of course I've talked to others that insist it has a funky flavor and is not roast beef like at all.
For tripe, it really has to be super clean before you eat it. If you get it clean enough, it just tastes like the really good fat/gristle part of the animal you're eating. If its not clean enough though, well, its going to taste like what it is designed to do: deliver poop to the colon. Also it needs to be cooked right. A lot of it is chewy and gristly and lends well to long cooking methods to soften it up. I wish we had a nice place around here that sold a quality bowl of menudo.
Bye space sword!

Re: Acquired Tastes
Of all the foods listed here so far... I can't really think of any of them that would get past my gag reflex long enough to actually try them (knowingly.) And I knew a kid who's parents used to make salt & vinegar chips for him in Jr. High. Can't say I was a big fan of them, but in Texas you can find a couple of brands (Lays & Miss Vickies.) And the only time I've seen vinegar available for fries, was at the fish & chips booth of a Renn Faire where I used to work.

You should move to England, Fish&Chips with salt and vinegar is very common. And salt&vinegar crisps.

Why move to England when you could move to Australia instead.
White vinegar is on the counter at every burger shop. I think you can even get it at McFood (not sure, I don't eat there if I can conceivably avoid it).
Personal acquired tastes:
- Straight wasabi paste. Got me many a school lunch via winning bets. Ditto drinking Tabasco.
- Prawns (shrimp) with shell still on. Saves time and fiddlyness, nicely crunchy. I remove the heads though - the spikes are too sharp to east safely.
- Kangaroo. Delicious.
- So are Emu and Crocodile, but they're much harder to find in the shops. Kangaroo you can get at any butcher or even a decent supermarket.
- 85% cocoa dark chocolate bars.
- Lamb's fry (kidneys) with mushrooms.
- Lamb brains (haven't had it for a long while, probably wouldn't bother as they're pretty boring, but I thought it was normal as a kid).
- Miso soup, Sushi, dried seaweed, etc, are all considered "normal food" in Australia....
- BBQ Eel! Yum!

Re: Acquired Tastes
There used to be a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant where I lived that served battered/fried crocodile (at least that's what they claimed it to be.) If it truly was croc...I'd have to say it was quite delicious.
Semi-unorthodox items at the Renn Faire:
- Turkey Legs (though these are more popular now than when I had first had one)
- Scottish Eggs (Hard-boiled eggs with ham & cheese, breaded/fried)
- Venison, Buffalo, and various other types of Jerky
- Fried Mac & Cheese on a stick
- Fried Ice Cream (first place I'd ever heard of/seen it)
- Baklava
- One shop that I'm pretty sure served Boar (never tried it, since they didn't accept my food coupons)
I'm sure there were others that I never got around to trying.
Unusual items from the State Fair of Texas:
- Fried Bacon
- Fried Snickers
- Fried Twinkies
- Just about anything else that is fryable/edible has probably been served (and probably some things that aren't)
An item that I wish more places served:
- Fried Dill Pickle Chips (especially with a little ranch... and I'm not a big fan of ranch normally)
Things I've had that might be considered unusual (not all I liked):
- Peanut butter & pickles (yum)
- Peanut butter & syrup sandwiches (yum)
- Milk & Sunny D (in the same glass...not so yum)

I will always vouch for the greatness of deep fried twinkies. Most people are like "Twinkies are disgusting, I hate them", but when you deep fry them... It makes magic happen. The cake warms up and gets deep fried, so when you eat it you can't tell how low quality cake it is. Then the filling melts and partially absorbs in to the cake. It's great.

You've never had good beer then, I assume?

reminds me of a character in the one book i read, he would keep a pouch of cut up garlic pieces and eat them constantly

I can't say I care for the fried versions... of course, it's possible the one I had wasn't properly prepared... it basically just tasted like frying grease.
And bldavis... I like regular twinkies also.
Oh, today for "brunch" at the dining facility, I was dipping my bacon/sausage in maple syrup and people were looking at me funny...
